Eagle Creek - R5 + 200-800 Just think its funny when people say this lens isnt sharp...

Most photos I've seen look like JPG's that the person processed. Yours looks like it still has fine details visible.

Just looking at the fine detail in the flower its possible to see that "razor sharp" is still a very thin slice of the scene... expectations vs reality at 800mm.

Haven't gotten to make a lot of progress on my 2500 queued RAWs, but here are a couple more trip samples:

Took a lot of patience, but got some really exciting dragonflies in flight - DIFs

Do you have the other RF 70-200mm also? Which is faster focusing?

Funny thing, I very very briefly had the 70-200 f/2.8 L for about a week before the 70-200Z dropped (didn't know it was coming), so I fortunately was able to trade it in and get the Z.

I can't say I tested the 70-200 f/2.8 L well enough to know how it fares vs. the Z. All I can say is that the Z is impeccable overall - great zoom throw, incredibly sharp, handles 2x TC incredibly well, minimal focus breathing, AF is quiet and very fast.

The zoom throw (and patience, and good AF from the R5II) helped a lot in getting this image, not to mention the great performance with 2x TC.

Yeah, I have the first 70-200mm 2.8 L and have done similar photos with it. I always want to try and track them while they're doing maneuvers but its not quite fast enough to do that. Maybe the R5 II is better.

I went and tried to get a better in flight shot. This time I used a 40mm macro tube so I got within macro range using the RF 70-200 2.8 L. I messed with the AF a bit and I found that "eye tracking" slows down the AF acquisition speed. Also, if shooting bursts at a small apertures it seems to throw the tracking off so I shoot at f/4 at smallest for bursts. At f/4 its pretty stable at 12fps tracking a hovering dragonfly. It can't track them flying in burst mode but it will track them through the viewfinder pretty well if they can be kept in frame. It's good enough to get a shot here and there of them zipping around.

Wow, great close-up shot!

I got some fairly long bursts of the dragonflies on my vacation, though even the R5II couldn't track them indefinitely (neither could I). I was able to pan while bursting on a few to get some flight and maneuvers. You mention 12 FPS - are you shooting mechanical? At least on the R5II I use ES and precapture almost all the time.

I should have explained better this photo. It was not difficult to take, but the portrait of the lady is very unique. It's called the Silver Queen. The dress contains 3,261 silver dollars and 28 $20 gold pieces in its belt. It's probably worth more than a quarter million dollars (USD) in just the value of the coins alone. Virginia City, Nevada where this painting was found in an old hotel, is an historic mining town that had one of the richest gold and silver deposits in the world. Those deposits were discovered in 1859. Mark Twain worked there in that town for a while.

The Silver Queen is 15 feet tall and eight feet wide. It's in the Silver Queen Hotel. The Silver Queen was painted in 1957.

Thanks! I've been shooting mechanical 99% of the time with the R5. I only use electronic when shooting long shutter speeds handheld. I noticed an improvement in handheld long exposures when using ES. For fast action like this the scanning speed is just too low on the R5. The slow scans probably trip up the AF too which is why panning and shooting is nearly impossible. However, since I first started trying these shots the AF has been improved quite a bit so I can't complain too much.

Does precapture affect overheating on the R5 II? I tried shooting some 4k 60 video in the heat and the camera was done for in < 5 minutes.. LOL...

Yeah, I know the R5 ES mode is more limited than on the R5II in terms of quality, so that makes sense. And the rolling shutter was a good bit worse too - not sure how the AF impact is, but wouldn't be surprised if it's noticeable in some cases.

As far as the R5II, I generally don't do long videos or anything, but for shooting stills I've never had any heat issues at all, and I'm in Texas usually. Precapture is great, haven't had any issues with it more generally.

Heavy overcast with a bit of a break. I only had about 20 minutes.

I took a shot of the resident Osprey in their pine tree in Tarpon Springs against the waning Gibbous Moon last Thursday morning. Since the focus was different for the bird and the Moon, I took two shots focused on one, then the other, and combined them by replacing the sky with the out-of-focus 'blob' with the other sky with the focused Moon, so this was the original scene. No processing was done differently for the two images, they were just combined at scale back to the original composition
