Z50ii issues with older Nikon OEM batteries

I recently purchased a z50ii. The supplied battery and the two Neewer batteries that I purchased last summer (included a USB-C charger), also work.

The problem is that I can't use my older EN-EL 15 OEM Nikon batteries in my z50ii. They jam. I had to use a knife point to coax one out of the camera body. They rub the battery compartment on the side with the Nikon wording (I hope that makes sense). Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Thanks!

Did you mean to type EN-El 25? The EN-EL15 is the wrong battery for the Nikon Z50II. You need the Nikon EN-El 25 or the newer EN-EL 25a. You are trying to fit the wrong battery into a smaller and different shaped battery compartment.

Not sure where this is going, but a 15 series battery won't remotely fit one of the DX bodies. I only have the older 25 series for my ZFC, but I also have a lot of FX cameras using the 15 - they're not even close.

EL-EN15 batteries are too big to go into the Z50/ii. If you got your old batteries into the camera, you mean EL-EN25.

If the batteries have to be pried out then they have swollen and should be discarded - they are now at end of life.

Something to think about: newer cameras and batteries charge in the camera. We need to check periodically that they are still slide in and out of the camera easily. I'd hate to find that a bad battery has trashed my camera.

Same is true for my D300 purchased in 2007-2008. IMO Lithium Ion batteries don't swell like the ancient NiCad's and any Alkaline battery. BTW both the D70 and D300 work perfectly because I have always maintained the batteries by checking them and charging them every 6 months.

There are no issues with older Nikon batteries for the Z50II (EN-EL25). If your battery has a fit problem it’s likely that the battery is failing and is beginning to expand. Do not attempt to charge it or it may combust. A lithium-ion battery fire burns extremely hot and cannot be safely extinguished with water. Take it to an approved battery disposal and recycling agent in your area.

Yes, they do.

A friend had a D7000. One of the EN-EL15 batteries she had for it was visibly swollen - I saw it with my own eyes.

A work colleague had a Dell laptop whose Li-Ion battery was so swollen it raised the trackpad and keyboard almost 1/4 inch, and cracked the upper case. I saw this with my own eyes. She could only use the computer by keeping it plugged in.

We had a similar problem with an early Microsoft Surface laptop.

Lithium Ion batteries do swell, possibly more likely to do so than other forms.

The Z50ii and Z50 both use EN-EL25 batteries. If you have any swelling in those batteries, stop using them immediately. If they swell in the camera and get stuck, you risk damage to the battery compartment that cannot be economically repaired. I have had similar batteries fail in the past. That shape battery is particularly prone to swelling and failure - and has damaged my equipment.

The Z50 II (and the other APSC Z cameras for that matter) doesn't use the EN15's. They use the EN25 or EN25a.

The original EN-25's from the original Z50 should work (I think they had a firmware update for the Z50 II at one point, as I think there may have been an issue where the original EN25's didn't work or wouldn't charge in the camera).

It's a hazy memory but I vaguely remember that there was an issue with the EN-
EL25a in the Z50 that was solved by a firmware update.

Yep, just checked and firmware 2.50 for the Z50 "Added support for EN-EL25a rechargeable Li-ion batteries."

I guess until the OP replies, we won't know what exactly they have (obviously the 15 won't work in the camera but I wonder if that was just a typo).
