Macrium reflectX worked now it doesn't

Hi everyone, following on from my questions a few days ago regarding me being a new user of Macrium reflect which I was grateful for all the replies and thoughts given.

I am now frustrated and at a loss.

As I mentioned previously I downloaded the trial version and after a few days of the scheduled back ups I had set up running correctly they one by one as they ran all showed errors and I've been unable to sort out whatever problem is causing the error.

This is the error that appears after all backups now manual run ones as well as scheduled.

I have looked online at the fault codes and Macriums trouble shooting guide and tried the so called fixes with no success.

Can anyone that has remedied this or has any thoughts please shed any light on how I might overcome this.

After spending hours and hours trying to solve the problem I am so weary and feel I am going round and round in circles. If anyone has any suggestions I would be very grateful.

Thanks

Dave

Make sure VSS is running.

Delete existing snapshots in case there's an issue with one of the snapshots or you don't have enough free space because of the snapshots. VSS requires a bit of drive space to make the snapshot that Macrium requests if it.

Thanks for the reply, I came across these 2 options as "fixes" after searching the fault codes online and have increased the space allocated and have deleted the previous snapshots and it made no difference.

I only have the free and discontinued version of Macrium Reflect.

The unsupported status and the fact that I've seem quite a few reports of errors have reduced my confidence in the product.

I only make system images from time to time since I keep all of my data on separate drives for which I have comprehensive backup protocols in place.

I am still imaging my system drive with Reflect but now I'm making a second image using Rescuezilla. This is based on Clonezilla which has had decades of real-world testing but it adds a hugely more friendly use interface.

One downside (and upside). You cannot run Rescuezilla under Windows. You have to boot up it up separately typically from a thumb drive. This is a minor inconvenience but it greatly simplifies the backup process making it more robust and reliable since you're not trying to backup an actively running system. Oh, and Rescuezilla is completely free!

Same here.

I've done multiple backups and restores with Reflect Free and never had a failure.

I routinely boot from a Macrium rescue thumb drive for both my image backups and restores for just that reason. Old school perhaps, but it works.

Hi, thanks for the input I am currently keeping my fingers crossed as the backups are working as they should now.

If this continues to be the case I will come back to this thread and update with what I have altered incase anybody else has the same problems.

But I want a few days problem free before I do this, wish me luck.

Have you tried using Rescuezilla to restore a folder from an image backup?

I've wondered about trying Rescuezilla to image my system and data drives. The capability to restore files and folders from a full image backup is a function that is a must for me. Especially restoring the Thunderbird profile folder that is huge at about 25+ GB.

Thanks.

Try checking your disk(s) for errors

Sorry that I missed your post earlier.

No, Rescuezilla really is partition based so it doesn't offer that option.

You can find some workarounds on line but they sound very incomplete and unreliable. I don't think you'd want to go there except in an emergency.

Thanks much for your info. Extracting files or folders from an "image" backup is a must for me since I've needed to use that option several times in the past.

Keep it warm.

Hi Morris, thanks for the suggestion.

Hopefully "Touchwood" I have got the trial of Macrium Reflect x working fully now.

I want to make sure it continues to do so for a couple of weeks doing various scheduled backups, if it continues to work as expected I will come back to this thread and update it with the adjustments I made incase others have similar problems.

An alternative I used long ago is to restore the entire image to a spare HDD, then copy the desired data from that drive. With modern software, I haven't needed to do that in years, but it remains a viable option if I ever do need it.

Glad you got it working. I have 7 computers running ReflectX all orchestrated by Macrium Site Manager. Some have rather complex schedules for various types of backup both image and file. I've been extremely happy with Macrium products and have been running them for many years. I agree with another poster the forums are a great resource and Macrium support is also very good.

I hope it works out for you,

Morris

Thanks for sharing that procedure. Never occurred to me to do that. Will keep it in my back pocket in case it is ever needed. 👍

Hi Chris , no I haven't, I have it appears "Touchwood" resolved the issue and the trial version is operational.

I am giving it some time to see if it continues to work correctly before I come back to this thread and update on what steps I took.

I didn't want to post " A fix for me" that turned out to be a false dawn incase others search the forum looking for answers and are led astray.
