Calling pro wedding photographers in this forum... what gear do you pack for weddings?

I thought you may like to share your type of lenses on your D100/D1x as well as WHEN and WHERE you use them... I have recently booked 2 weddings for Jan & March next year and I would really appreciate learning from everyone's experiences.

There's been a few threads recently on the fave 1 or 6 lens questions - but I guess a specific thread on lenses used by Wedding Photographers would greatly benefit us all (me especially :)

Bambi Cantrell loves the 85mm 1.2 on her Canon EOS 1N for the majority of her shots, but on a Nikon DSLR - what primes or zooms should we be using...? Thanks.

Mike,

I'm not a wedding photographer, but this topic has been raised before. You might try searching here and in Nikon DSLR talk. Fropm reading those posts I can tell you for starters that many use the Nikon 28-70 AFS for weddings.

28-70 AFS f/2.8

Film camera (for formals)
35-70 f/2.8, 85mm f/1.8

I'd sub the 17-35 for the 20mm and add the 85mm 1.4 (whoever Bambi is, she'd love that lens if she shot Nikon).

Hi,

I am no pro-wed photographer but these are the lenses I carried to a wedding when I do one.
  • 17-35mm AF-S f/2.8
  • 28-70mm AF-S f/2.8
  • 80-200mm AF-S f/2.8
That's pretty much cover 98% of my shootings. You wonder about the other 2%? I would really like to get the 85/1.4 someday for low light wedding hall and churches where no flash is allowed.

Hope that helps,
The'

First, I wanted to become a wedding photographer. Next, it was landscapes. Then, I wanted to do wildlife. Lately, I am a confused photographer... so now, I just shoot anything :-)

I just bring two lenses:
  • tamron 28-75 on the fuji S2
  • voigtlander 15mm on my Bessa-R
Carlo :)

I am about to make the leap from Mamiya 645's to D2H and can not decide which would be the best primary Wedding lense. In looking over the choices, it seems to me that the AF-S 24-120mm F/3.5 - 5.6 G ED-IF would cover most shots - except where a F/ 1.4 would be needed.
Anybody have experience or other recommendations?

Let's just say that on weddings, I carry my whole camera bag.

But I only use the 28-70 (primarily) and the 12-24 (yeah... I know it's wide, but sometimes you just gotta go beyond boundaries)

Carl,

why the 35-70 on film as opposed to the 28-70?

aside from the limited range, is the 35-70 sharp for digital as well?

thanks

17-35afs and 28-70 afs. That cover 99.99%. If you have a dark church and no flash allowed and must shoot from long distances then 70-200 Vr. This covers everything. Hint: Stay with ED glass for your entire system.

When the 17-55 hits the market, sell both and get it. 24-85 effective range at 1.5 FOV will be all you really need. I've shot entire weddings with the 28-70 and entire weddings with the 17-35.

Quality wise the 17-35 is better and 2.8 is really fast enough. If it's a small room your shooting you'll need the 17-35. Forget the Sigma 15-30 way too much distortion for tight people pics. The 17-35 focuses closer and has less distortion at 17mm than the 28-70 at 28mm.

You'll find many who shoot the 17-35 and a 50mm and brings a 70-200 vr. Look at Gary Fongs bag.

Regardless, you need fast glass like 2.8 or faster. Personally, I shoot really wide or tight. I only use 16-35 2.8, 24 1.4, 70-200 2.8, and an 85 1.2 lenses for convenience and speed. I hate mid range zoom lenses like 24-70, and 28-70. To me those lenses produce very boring pictures.

For most weddings I use 2 D100s - one with the 12-24 and the other with the 28 - 105. These two cover the range of shots I normally take and are very sharp providing thought is given to apertures. The other two lenses I have in the bag for weddings are 50 1.4 and the 85 1.4. These are used for low light shots and a large proportion of the portrait shots of the bride and groom.

I shoot about 200 weddings a year and find this kit to be the ideal compromise for me.

I have wonderfull dreams of doing weddings with top primes, but for some unknown reason there is just not time to do lens changes all the time so I have to stick to Zoom's.

If I could aford another camera lets say two S2's then you can have lets say a 35mm on the one and a 85mm on the other.

But I don't have two camera's. (Santa did not like me this year)
Regards
Jan
