I got a chance to handle the new X-E5 at the BILD Photo Show in NYC today.I presently have an X-E3 and the first thing I noticed was that the X-E5 is heavier by about a quarter of a pound, And being slightly larger than the older model was a major letdown Everything else about it is better so I have it on pre-order and looking forward to getting it in August. The only other feature I will miss is that lovely Auto switch on the top for when I hand the camera to someone to take a shot. To put it in auto you must put the aperture ring and the shutter dial to A.o, definitely a heftier feel but, hey, you can't have it all.

Thanks for sharing. It’s the same weight as my XE4 with half case or Fujifilm metal grip, so I don’t expect to notice any difference, if I don’t feel like this one needs a grip as well. Looking forward to it!
The XM5 is a really neat size but not as capable as I would want. I love the X-E3 and the X-E5 is the 3 on steroids.

The X100 also became heavier, first when they went to machined aluminum top and bottom plates in the V, and then when they added IBIS in the VI.

Spec wise, the X-E5 is only a bit wider, but smaller in the other dimensions. Perhaps the wider top plate made it feel larger? But yes, the weight is up a fair bit due to IBIS and that top plate.

In terms of that Auto switch, Fuji did add a "P" to the shutter speed dial. I believe that serves as a similar function, putting you in Program mode, with no need to adjust the Aperture dial on the lens.

Yes 30% heavier.

As to the weight on my feet it is 0.1% more!

Anyhow at last a reason not to upgrade!

Phew.

The auto switch was replaced by the “P” mode on the shutter speed dial. Select that and you’re in program mode regardless of the aperture ring.

I seem to remember the old auto switch did more than just set exposure to program mode. Is that functionality available on the new camera?

I suspect you’re right, although I’m unsure of the detail. I don’t think P mode is anything more than P mode, but I’m not sure. It’s not a feature I’ve ever used in either form. I suspect a review of the X-E4 might say—I think that’s the camera it was introduced on.

One thing that I think I recall is that the auto mode would only save a JPEG, whereas the P mode can store a raw file as well.

Anyway, at worst it at least saves the OP having to move the aperture ring 🙂

Complete auto is like using your cellphone. It analyses and adapts to the situation. Almost the same as P but slightly better.

More useful if Auto Switch can use choose within Auto ISO Preset 1 or Auto ISO Preset 2.

There is a weight/size gain required for IBIS. I expect the rear element of the lens had to be moved slightly forward for clearance required for IBIS also. It's just a fact of life - the more features you want the more that has to go in the camera.

I get it. I'm looking forward to the end of August.
