Nikon Z 58mm f/0.95? Anyone?

Would I use it or just stare at it from time to time?
I have seen the beautiful metal box it comes in – definitely something to stare at!

It’s a fully manual lens, so first ask yourself: are you comfortable with manual focus? What do you usually shoot? Do you have time to focus carefully in your work?

f/0.95 gives a very shallow depth of field—great for look, but not easy to handle. It’s not really about 58mm vs. 50mm or 0.95 vs. 1.2—it’s about how you shoot and whether you’ll actually use it or just admire it.

Ask yourself those questions and the answer usually becomes clear.

I have looked at this lens a lot, but I can't see useing one enought to justify the expense.

However, I can rent one for a week for $360 to satisfy my curiosity. I might just do that if I every have a week off to experiment with it.

It’s a lot for a rental but it would be fun to do that. Nothing like personal experience. I just might do that also. :)

If you are going to get one, now is the time before price increases and tariffs.

According to NR, the Noct will see a price increase of 8.13%, which is quite substantial given the starting price.

After all, it's an increase from $7,999.9 to $8,649.95.

On the other hand, anyone with the resources for such a niche lens as the Z 58/0.95 Noct shouldn't be put off by this in the end.

I disagree. There are people that might want to buy one of these. For most, $8k is too much. But if the used price was $4,000 for instance, we would see a lot more people willing to buy it. The reverse is also true. As the price goes up, it get out of range from even more people.

Not sure if you're talking about the Z Noct or not; Metal box? It's just a customized Pelican case.
The ones in the UK have at least an aluminium type exterior.
That's interesting to hear!
Mine looks like this one.

My only issue with it, is that one has to keep unscrewing the lens hood off, to put it back into the case. B/C of the foam cutouts.

At one point, I was thinking of getting replacement foam so that I could leave the hood on when storing.

Honestly, upon unboxing this lens, if I got one, the pelican case would go back in the box and up in the attic and never be seen again :)

I store all my gear in a big gun safe and I’ll take out what I want to use and put it in my preferred bag for the outing.

Are you sure about this?

It's advertised by Nikon UK and other European Nikon sites with the identical CT-101 Heavy Duty Case in black/anthracite.

The absurd thing is the price. Nikon charges €579 for the case as an accessory in the EU, while B&H charges $699 in the US.

So a hefty surcharge compared to comparable sized Pelican cases.

Hi,

I have used the predecessor for a very long while. The main reason to get such is you like shooting lights at night. Or faces lit only by birthday candles.

I have a shot of my Grandmother on her 90th birthday in 1980 which was shot using the original Noct. 90 candles whose flames look like candle flames, not some misshapen, starred things.

Just that one shot was worth renting the Noct. And then it led me to buying one some years later when I could manage to save up enough money to do so.

These days, it pretty much only shoots Christmas light displays.

When I was using it regularly, it would just leave it inside my Think Tank Hubba Hubba Hiney 😋

The Pelican is nice, keeps it weather/dust sealed and apparently it (the lens) is actually susceptible to shocks and stuff so the foam padding helps. I’m pretty clumsy / hard on stuff so I try to store it properly now.

Could you shed a little more light on this?
It could all be here say / heresy 😜, but I think I remember reading about it early on. It was released a while ago. Here's a sample point of reference.

Oh, and the manual has a little snippet in it.
I don't remember seeing this for my other lenses, but not 100% on this.

I was lusting after that thing for so long, when the Z version was announced, I was so happy. However, it turned out to be a completely different beast! It was a tough choice, since the older one was quite expensive, and the newer one was even more...

I also was eyeballing the relatively inexpensive (~$1000) Chinese Mitakon, but one of my Sony photography friends had one; after 2 minutes with it, I was like no thank you, and ordered the Z Noct.
