The theme for this Challenge is Water. Inspiration is the 3 plus inches of rain we've received in the past 3 days following one-half inch last Thursday - it's wet. Looking at Jerry's list, water and related themes have been selected numerous times, but it's been almost 2 years since the last iteration, so hopefully some new images are out there.

All forms of water are fair game as long as water is one of the primary attributes. Ideally, the more nuanced and artistic the better. Whether it's landscape, meteorological water, artsy water, macro, steam, ice.... all is fair game. Composition and creativity take precedent over technical perfection (within limits....). Judging will be horribly subjective.

This mini challenge starts now and will end at 5:00 PM Central Time on Wednesday May 28th.

Maximum of three entries and/or five exhibits per member. 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place Winners will be selected only from Entries. Honorable Mentions will be selected only from Exhibits. As usual, coveted Dishonorable Mentions will be issued to the truly deserving.

The photo must be taken by you and only you (you pressed the shutter button, self timer or remote shutter release).

Subject to DPREVIEW rules regarding propriety, any subject is fine. Concomitantly, any equipment may be used. I'll allow the use of AI as part of processing the final image, but if you used AI, that must be disclosed and it must not substantially alter the image content and message.

Please submit your pictures as a REPLY to this post. Please indicate clearly whether your image is an Entry or an Exhibit. An undesignated post will be considered an Exhibit.

Comments on others' photos are also strongly encouraged!! These mini-challenges and the weekly Show, Tell and Critique thread are some of the ways we on the forum can get to know and learn from one another. That friendliness is the reason I am here.

PLEASE, PLEASE, PLEASE consider making some of your posts Entries. We seem to cycle through the same few hosts of these Challenges. New and different hosts would help keep these Challenges fun with new and different ideas, and you can make as much or little work of the hosting as you like. Thanks!

The 1st place winner will host the next Challenge, selecting the theme. If the winner does not respond within 3 days or declines to host, the 2nd place winner becomes the host. If the second-place winner declines, the 3rd place winner becomes the host.

Willow Falls at Willow River State Park - near Hudson, Wisconsin. From October 2024. Shot 1/30 sec using a hand rail as a stabilizer. Came for the fall colors and stayed for the falls. Brought my older Kodak P&S along to see what I can get out of it. I like using vintage equipment from time to time and challenging myself to get the most of it with its limitations. One of my better images out of the camera that day, at least IMO.

Upscaled in Topaz Photo AI from 12 MP to 48 MP and sharpened.

Stillwater, Minnesota - Decaying ice sculpture (due to a stretch of warm temperatures) from the World Snow Sculpting Championship. Shot February 1st, 2025 during a snow burst. I had just purchased the Sony RX10IV and this was my maiden voyage with the camera. There is a pink tint due to a red LED light pointed at the sculpture. I thought the facial expression was appropriate for the situation. I can hear it screaming, "I'M MELTING!"

Thanks Dak. It took me a bit to realize the over/under bit - the layering definitely adds interest. I could easily spend time there trying out different compositions.

That's gotta be an interesting experience. Fits the theme with an atypical composition - good stuff. I'm not afraid of heights but am somewhat claustrophobic so probably wouldn't be rushing to be first in line... But the view even on a rainy day must be something.

Thanks,
Nick

Thanks dtop. These are all great. The last one sucks me in trying to see all the detail. I think a daytime image would be less impressive. Really like all 3.

I am sure I could hear Mrs hwv recite those lines from Coleridge's "The Rime of the Ancient Mariner" as she went for a wander from our villa in the Maldives.

I too :)

The Ruhr region has had a number of former railroad tracks converted to use by bicyle, and to complete some routes, a few bridges have been special-built. This is one, though the "Emscherweg" along the river Emscher does not as much follow old railroad tracks but rather an increasingly renaturalized river that was formerly mainly used as a sewage canal. It still has canal character over extensive stretches but is no longer carrying sewage.

Thanks Ryan for this and the incredible melting man. I like the back stories on both images. I never would have guessed the falls were shot with vintage digital - your results are much much better than I ever got out of old gear.

Perfect timing Bill. One might argue the shot would be more spectacular mid-day with direct sunlight above, but the muted colors complement the exploding surf. The ice in the foreground is a nice touch.

Thanks,

Very apt words David! The color and clarity of your ocean refuge is inviting! Mrs hwv adds enough visual interest - nice.

Thanks David. Good to see your name again!

Not the greatest view on a rainy day. If you look closely you can make out The Palace of Westminster (Houses of Parliament) and Big Ben.

Thanks George. Interesting shots - the last two are my favorites. The yellow net is interesting - not quite sure how it works, but interesting.
