Perhaps nothing new for people who own MFT equipment but a good informative video by Duade Paton about the joy of shooting wildlife with MFT.

An inspiring video indeed.

As to, "Why people are switching to MFT", I'd like to see evidence of this. No, really, I don't mean that cynically. Anecdotal comment is not enough.

I agree! It is a hopeful message but perhaps it doesn’t reflect the reality.

I suspect it comes from interactions with his viewers/subscribers. He did a video a few months back about things one should consider before investing in new gear. One point he raised was weight, and in doing so he said "One I have been getting all the time recently, and it's surprised me how often it's popping up, is people are complaining about the weight".

Like I said in the other thread, the video would add weight if Duade Paton gets himself a OM1 and something like 100-400.

If you scroll through his previous videos, he regularly test lenses and cameras from other systems. So why would OM system be any different?

Here is current gear list and it's Canon.

People are switching both to and away from MFT. He's giving some of the reasoning why many of the people who switch to MFT are doing so.

It doesn't appear that people in Japan are switching to m4/3rds. Aps-c appears to be way more popular now.

The OM System OM3 and OM1ii didn't make it into the top 50!

Yes, I was looking at that report the other day. As someone curious about getting an OM-3 someday, I hope perhaps it will see some good sales sooner than later. At least, if that top 50 chart is an indication of it not selling very well, then that would seem likely.

But, then I'm in the USA, so tariffs might block any potential price drops. :-/

Still can't get over the RX100 VII going up to $1700 due to tariffs. I bought mine not that long ago for $1300, and felt like it was a bit overpriced already. *sigh*

No one is "switching". The comments Duade highlighted are people who already shoot FF, and added an additional kit. The M43 system is a side kit that compliments FF, it doesn't replace it. Think of it like steak and potatoes. The potatoes don't replace the steak. No one's switching from eating steaks to potatoes. It's a good addition for FF users who can afford to run two systems. It's great for adventures where you're walking long distances and don't want to carry so much weight. Adventures where image quality can take a back seat - adventures where the journey is more important than the destination.

No one is switching to MFT in any meaningful numbers. Market share continues to slide, even if slowly.

I am firmly in with MFT since 2011. It continues to evolve and do more than I need.

Duade Paton’s perspective is that of a Bird Photographer. Lightweight long telephoto lenses and ‘reach’ are therefore important and m4/3 excels there.

Bird photography is (I think) very small relative to ‘mainstream’ photography and I don’t think m4/3 is making wider inroads - I haven’t heard reports of many landscape photographers switching to m4/3 . . . maybe they are ?

I used a 20MP APS-C for 6 years for bird photography and I was thinking about a switch to (or adding) m4/3 to get the extra reach for birding, but then a 32MP APS-C was released so I stuck with APS-C. And because of the high pixel density I’m using a 300mm lens where FF birders are typically using a 600mm.

But I did add a m4/3 body and lens for general and in particular for travel photography.

Nowadays, shooting wildlife is the strongest reason to use m43.

I may be quitting m43 because of no good hybrid compact m43 camera.

Leica, Hasselblad, Pentax, Ricoh and Sigma didn't get one models in. These must be terribly unpopular brands :-/

Maybe wildlife photography isn't popular in Japan.

It seems like IBIS is not a popular sought after feature in Japan as the R10 doesn't have it and is the no.1 seller.

I doubt a camera that's absent from the top 50 necessarily represents a decline of a brand.

Neither did the Nikon Z8 or Z9, Canon R5 or R7, Sony A1 or A9, Fuji XH2S - ie no wildlife orientated kit. Wildlife is where m43 really excels - in fact, I was quite surprised that the G9ii made it into the list
Leica, Hasselblad, Pentax, Ricoh and Sigma didn't get one models in. These must be terribly unpopular brands :-/
😂

The G100 occupies the no.12 spot and has been the most popular m4/3 camera purchase in Japan. Perhaps people are switching to the G100! It doesn't have IBIS just like Japan's no.1 seller the Canon R10. Maybe there's an IBIS backlash over there! 😂

People get older, can't carry a full frame setup all day long. MFT is the wildlife shooter's retirement home :)

The time has come to consider M43 family. Under consideration new OM-1 Mark 2 as quality digital camera. No longer interested in Fuji XT cameras: Fuji X-T5 with unnecessary 40MP sensor. The deciding factor OM System with superb lenses like 75mm f1,8 ED Weight 305g and 40-150mm f4 R ED Weight 190g. Nikon Canon Sony full-frame cameras all chasing each other with more expensive lenses. OM SYSTEMS for me.
