Why so few females here? I thought it's supposed to be...

I like to think I'm in touch with my feminine side. Does that
count? LOL

I do not even think it was a women who came up with the idea to
list out their camera gear in the sig of a message. A definite male
trait, one does it and then they all do it. Monkey see. Monkey do!

I'm sure, like most woman, she's naive about sticking her behind,
both of them, at the mostly male viewers.
But she's trying to be inventive. I like that.
Naive!!!! LOL! I just thought I'd give you guys a break and make it easy so you don't have to crane your neck! There's no stopping you from looking so I might as well have some fun! LOL! Besides, it's only sexual b/c your a beast! LOL! ;) Now, if I were wearing a miniskirt and a thong..... DOWN BOY! if I were wearing a miniskirt and a thong.... it would be in hubby's wallet, not on the net! LOL! :)
My girlfriend thinks she's mooning us all, PG style. Or maybe she
thinks the camera works better upside down, LOL.
See, the women know it's innocent. :)
But I still like some of her images and she should participate more
in autofocus arguments or metering or expodisk tests.
Yeah, that's the ticket... I should obsess more about that stuff instead of shooting. If someone has a faulty device they shoudl return/exchange it. My original tamron lens did NOT focus correctly - I returned it. I didn't ask for a thousand opinions, I just returned it. :)
someone do a test on using a bra as a white balance standard?
Maybe lonit can test that for us.

Lonnit
at least, that's what some of them have told me.
women generally have great composition skills, they see the world
and can frame a photo almost by instinct. But just keep the heavy
gears out of their hands, the majority of the ones I came in
contact with remarks how heavy the gear is, and why they can't be
lighter or smaller.

that said, there are always a bunch of gear head gals out there..
especially the ones who tear apart bikes, rebuild them and go
racing.

I totally nderstand where you're coming from with what you wrote, but boy, did you leave yourself open for frying!!!! LOL!
A direct example. Lonnit, your photography or more socially driven,
or subject driven. You want to have fun with your photography.
I want to have fun with it, but I do, strongly, want to get to a point where I can sell it. I want that kind of recognition and validation. :) Itll also pay for and justify my getting some sweet L lenses!!!! Ooooooooooooh!!
DavidP's photography is more technically driven. How the photo is
made is more important to him than the subject. He spends loads of
money on gear that is heavily under utilized. It's more important
to him to take a photo with an expensive lens, than of a good
subject.
Oh boy, you'd better run and take cover now!!!!! LOL!

got me pegged wrong on that one. I'm yearning for a whole set of L lenses! And, I want more megapixels!! But you can't compare me to the "average woman". I've never fit the mould.
David wants to be a great photographer.
I want to be great enough to have shows and see people buy my work. I think that would be sooo awesome!
The greatest I possibly can!
easily outshine him with a minimal investment. The technology, and
price of it, is almost more compelling to him than what he does
with it.
I don't think that's fair. David has done some nice work that I couldn't touch. Maybe I have a good eye, and potential, but I'm in my infancy and I need gobs of knowledge and experience to touch most anybody here, including David. I owe David alot tooo... he did alot of hand-holding with me and guided me well, and taught me lots. I'm in debt to him. :)

Lonnit, I'm pretty sure we haven't met before. I haven't heard of those groups you mention.

Thank for your comments on my photos :-) I'm still discovering which type of photography I like to do....but so far it's MOST of it! LOL! I just like taking pictures.

Congratulation on winning the exhibition category of the challenge...and by a long way too! Fine shot, very deserving of first place.

Now....winning that category is the best of both worlds ;-) You get the glory of first place without the work!

I've hosted 2 CTF challenges to date.....and I KNOW the amount of work that goes into it....but it's such a lot of fun and a huge honour.....and look at the hints, tips and friends you pick up along the way.

Hope our paths cross more often!

Gayle
Hi Lonnit, just thought I'd pop in here and make myself known.
(Thanks for the "introduction" Ann).
Actually, I've been following your entries in the CSLR Challenges
and looked at your pBase gallery on more than one occasion. You
have some very fine work there, indeed.
Thank you very much. It's a start. I'm eager to learn and improve.
The reason we have not crossed paths yet is that I don't frequent
this forum and I don't actually "qualify" yet for the CSLR
Challenge as my camera of choice is an A70. However, I'm a regular
entrant in the CTF Challenges and hope to give you guys a run for
your money in a few months when I get a 300D ;-)
You can give us a run, but forget about the money! LOL! Bizarre
contest in which you win a ton of work!!!!! LOL!
About me......I am Australian married to an American, mum of 4,
computer technician by day, prolific and enthusiastic photographer
by night and weekend. And loving every minute of this learning
curve that photgraphy brings.
It is a wonderous hobby! :)
It's very nice to make your acquaintance, I hope you'll take a few
minutes to check out my gallery.
Wow - petting an actual kangaroo! Cool - and a nice shot to boot!
"Following in His Footsteps" is so sweet. :) Holy cow! - those are
some deeeeeeeep strawberry seeds! Great capture! Oh, but you
really, really shine with the still lifes!!!! GEEZ those are great!
(Including the Gippstown ones!) Truly, the still lifes are your
finest work and quite quite good!
Gayle.....extending the hand of friendship across the internet :-)
Lonnit, reaching out to grasp it, and shaking it vigorously! :)

BTW, pardon the exclaimation points, I tend to get a bit
enthusiastic! LOL!

Warmly,
Lonnit
BTW, you wouldn't happen to run in any of the AP or Maya Wrap
circles would you? We havent' met before, elsewhere on the net,
have we?
Warmly,
Lonnit
There are some fine female photographers on this forum and others
here on dpreview. You, Roberta, Mlynn, Helen, Faye, Ann (Canadian),
Gayle, Renee, me... to name just a few. (Don't want to leave
anybody out. I know you are out there but my brain is rather fuzzy
when it comes to names.) And photography is also supposed to be
about the young and some of us defy that rule too. I've learned a
great deal from other ladies on this and the Sony forum. We're
here. :) Ann

The presence of Lonnit has no bearing on how I reply to Yakuza when
he's being his typical self when referring to me.
I doubt it "impresses" her,
No, it doesn't. I didn't think it very fair to flatter me to take a bash at David. All it did was discredit any compliment to me, as how could I believe it if it's used as a weapon against someone else. And if by any slight chance it was supposed to be sincere, it came in such an ugly wrapper that I lost all taste for it anyway. I don't like being used as a pawn and frankly I'm insulted that you should think so little of me Yakuza, to use me like that, particulary since we are complete strangers. Perhaps we could all start over again.
mind about me in a negative way, either.
I don't need anyone else telling me how I should feel about another person. I like who I like and don't like who I don't like and it's all my decision. There are even people who's talents I envy but have no respect for as human beings, there are people I don't like, but can learn a heckuva lot from. In this forum I respect everyone for what they bring to the table. I also understand that no matter how nice a person is s/he will always have people that don't like her/him and no matter how rotten someone is, they'll still have people that like them. I'm here to learn, and if I can have fun and socialize it makes it all the more enjoyable. I hate to see bickering, but it's none of my affair and doesn't change my opionion of anyone. It was obvious by Y's commment that he and David have some negative history. That's between you guys. I'd appreciate it if we could keep things friendly but David's been a friend to me and nothing's changed between us.
Yep. And how interesting that it happens between two guys , in a
thread about the presence of women at dpreview.

Uh, huh. Right.

And we got Bin Laden and Saddam, too. Well, we will. Tomorrow, I
promise. LOL.

I will put my photos up against his ANY day of the week.

And we'll see just how he and Lonnit would compare against me in MY
type of photography.
Hey, HEy, HEY!!! Wait a minute.... I'm an innocent pawn here! Please don't condemn me! I'm a total newbie! I never claimed to be better than anyone here, in fact how could I be?... I'm totally inexperienced! WHATEVER your photographic realm, I've no doubt you'd blow me away - it's YOUR realm and I've no experience in ANY realm!!!! :)
could compete with either me OR Lonnit, based on what I've seen of
his work.
I'm still feeling a little pawny here!
And I suspect Lonnit would be "out of her zone" doing what I do . .
Now you've got me curious... what DO you do?
. much as I would be trying to shoot in her style and subjects.
I don't have a style! I don't think one can develop a "style" in only 2 mo of shooting! LOL!! I'm just yutzing around trying to figure out how to work the camera! LOL! It was only last night's thread about exposure compensation that got me to completely understand how to use it! LOL! I've not even tried it yet! LOL!
How one could even begin to compare the two different styles of
shooting and subject matter is beyond me. It's like comparing a
landscape photographer to a photojournalist.
Well, actually it's not hard. I don't like opera but I can tell if someone is good at it. I detest accordian, but I can tell if someone is talented with it. I can tell if Mary is a better opera singer than John is an accordianist! :)

And what's the difference who's better at waht anyway? We're all here to learn and share ideas and get inspired. :) If being here makes one a better photographer, super! If it doesn't then why bother? Even teaching others is helpful to oneself. :)

Warmly,
Lonnit

Thank for your comments on my photos :-) I'm still discovering

I know what you mean! I jsut accidentally fell in love with BW! LOL! Never had the desire and then I messed up and shot my son's class in ISO3200 and my quick fix to slavage them was to dump everything but the lightness challel in lab and covert to greyscale. I was thrilled with the grainy BW results!
Congratulation on winning the exhibition category of the
challenge...and by a long way too! Fine shot, very deserving of

OMG!! I Did???? I didn't even know!!! I've been hanging with you guys all nite and never got a chance to go check the results! WOW!!!!!! Thanks for letting me know!!!!

Newbie = pawn. ;) j/k

I wasn't "condeming" you in the least. I was merely pointing out to Yakuza that I'd be perfectly willling to "take you on" in "available light" concert photography.

For two reasons: I don't think you have much experience at it, and I don't think you have many fast lenses.

Those two things would put you at a disadvantage.

Just like me trying to "compete" with you with the type of stuff you've been shooting wouldn't exactly be fair . . . to me. Why? Basically, that's not "my type" of shooting.

I think Yakuza simply likes your style better than he likes mine.

That says nothing of skill level.

I'd much prefer to listen to a second-rate country/western band than a top-notch rock/n/rolll band, for example.

Oh, I know that. :)
For two reasons: I don't think you have much experience at it,

Well, as far as low light goes, it seems I'm forever finding myself shooting in low light and hand holding. I'm not big on tripods nor flashes. So, I might have more experience in that realm than you think, since virtually nothing in my gallery has had flash and I have no studio equipment.

As for actual concerts, nope, never tried that yet - but that would be a darker venue then my kids classroom or any of the other places in my gallery. :) I bet I'd fare better than you'd expect - but yes, I don't have fast lenses. I've got the canons in 28-135 IS 3.5-5.6 and 75-300 IS 4-5.6 , and a wide angle phoenix that is my cheap emergency wide angle, so that would make it more difficult for me. I'll have to find a way to give it a try. Being a mama I'm not hanging out in dark smokey clubs at 2 am shooting bands! LOL!
Those two things would put you at a disadvantage.

Just like me trying to "compete" with you with the type of stuff

Basically, that's not "my type" of shooting.
I didn't know I have a "type" of stuff! LOL! I"m so new I'm just trying my hand at shooting anything and everything. I'll tell you, I had a blast doing those rain shots about a week ago. That was a whole new experience for me and I liked alot of the shots. Have you seen them? If you'd care to look, they are at http://www.pbase.com/lonnit then click on ::Rain:: I was very happy for a first time ever trying my hand at rain.
I think Yakuza simply likes your style better than he likes mine.
Or maybe he just likes to irk you more than he likes to irk me. ;)
That says nothing of skill level.

I'd much prefer to listen to a second-rate country/western band

And wouldn't it be a very boring planet if everyone liked the same thing? I'd guess then only one of us would need to be a photographer. :)

Warmly,
Lonnit
