Welcome to the Weekly Image Thread!

This thread will appear every Saturday (GMT). If the thread is nearing full before the next Saturday, I may start a new thread and carry on until it fills or the next Saturday arrives and it is reasonably full in which case I will start another. Confused, so am I! From time to time the start could be delayed if I am unavailable.

Although this Weekly thread is in the Olympus SLR forum, we openly welcome users of all brands and models.

Please:

  1. Reply to this post and change the TITLE!
  2. Please reply to at least one other contribution, your replies encourage posters!!!
  3. If asked, please share your processing techniques or technical details.
  4. Please show the EXIF if possible. Please identify the lens used regardless of which camera was used to take the image. This helps people form opinions of the lens used with the body to possibly influence future acquisitions.
  5. If special lighting was used to create your image stating what was done may help others.
Thanks for joining and contributing this week.

I, too, recently bought a cheap ($7) UV light. walking around after dark I mostly saw scraps of white paper glowing brightly. In the natural world, I didn't find much that responded to the UV.

A flower:

natural light and UV light
natural light and UV light

But I really got it to test this ruby that I bought (9 carat, synthetic, for $17)

Authentic rubies, whether natural or synthetic, will fluoresce in UV.

And it does:

Some glassware looked interesting:

Oooh! You have purple glass! Hope I have too. Haven't tried all yet.

I'm so mad. I have had the flash a while, but haven't got around to test it. I thought it was great fun and wated to do some more. But I can't, because I've misplaced the darn flash! So silly. I've just moved between my shower room and my computer and maybe I was out in the kitchen and tried some stuff there. Sat down to eat and then it was gone. It's nowhere! 🥵

hey meow yes it grows among these blue flowers, last spring it wasn't there, I don't know if it's some mutation? those blue flowers have been there for at least 15 years

The landscape there is more rolling hills than the area where I live which is mostly flat, but there are some hills. Coming down to the village where we live there are hills but that is unusual for the county. The soil here varies from 'tobacco sand' to heavy clay. You can guess what was grown in the 'tobacco sand'! Now a lot of it is used for ginseng, or was already used for it. Our property is clay on top but the property on the other side of our ravine is sandy loam. The field across the road from our property is mostly sandy loam but there are areas of clay as well. You can see those areas easily when the crops begin to grow! The clay areas are normally stunted in growth compare to the other areas.

That is very cool Charlotte! I like it! I have not utilized UV light since I was teaching physics. It has been a while! No idea why something like that did not occur to me! You did well! Now I may have to find a UV light to use. I do have one but alas, it is enclosed within a stainless steel water sterilizer.

I did not know UV flashlights existed!
If you find a good one I may ask you to buy one for me too (I'll reimburse you of course!). I got the cheap one off amazon.se knowing it wouldn't be good enough. Really hard to find other than toys within EU.

There are several problems with them. Most are probably made for detecting stuff like urine (or other discharges...) or looking for amber. For us, we would like a less focused light beam, wider. And better reach, i.e. stronger light. And without hotspots! There should be something between the $20 toys and the 4-500 pro ones, me thinks.

Supposedly it's easy to modify old flashes for UV, but I wouldn't dare. It's high voltage in there. But I think you know your physics better than I, so maybe you can. There are descriptions on the web. Supposedly, if you get the right kind of flash, it's as easy as removing a plastic UV filter inside the flash and mount a filter that only lets UV through outside the flash.

I can show you this the other pictures I took too. Note I didn't try one bit to make them look good. Just wanted to see the colours.

The floor tiles are black and the joints (english?) between them medium gray. So they look about right. We have hard water here, so there may be the occasional calcium stains, but most of the stains you see is invisible stuff in normal light.

A fresh green geranium leaf.

Half an orange, a boiled egg and a shot glass with milk. The colored specks on the orange don't look like noise. I think it's something in the orange that emits a different light than the rest.

I was wondering about your orange. Soo I went into a closet, closed the door, and took my own orange pictures. UV light only on left,, right is mixed fluorescent and white LED light:

I neglected to respond about the silo. I looked up Moomin house. A series of books written in Swedish by a Fin! I also found out Swedish was an official language in Finland! The silo is much thinner than those houses so it could be a home for some small elves but not people, unless they wanted to live in a very cramped dwelling. You would have enough room to stretch out, but not much left over! A ladder would have to be used to go between floors as there would be no room for a staircase. Still, it would be better than living on the street!

Andrew

P.S.: There will be no butt prints in the clay from me! I am not a fan of dirt! Well not on me in any case. In the field where it belongs is good!

And, do you know the wavelength of the light produced by your uv flashlight? I found several different light sources, flashlights and led panels. There is some variation in wavelength of light given off. Most of the flash lights are described as being for use for finding areas of pet urine in the home. Yuk!

The 'Pharos' operated by the Northern Lighthouse Board who service and maintain lighthouses and navigation buoys from their base in Oban.

I'll post images from the island later.

It's the main language in the part of Finland Tove came from. People usually don't even speak Finnish there. It used to be Swedish, you see. That was in our imperialistic past when we strived to Make Sweden Great. :-D

It's very interesting to visit there, because they speak a somewhat more archaic, could even say more correct, Swedish than we do. Feels like visiting your childhood, in other ways too.

Will too!

Yes, I think that's why they have such a small circle of light. What we want is 365nm. That's what mine is supposed to have. What it really has is of course another matter. I seems they always leak some visible light, so it should also have a filter for that. Mine came with that, but not a good one I think. Cheap filters can be had from for example AliExpress. Lights too, but I guess it's a toss if they are any good.

Now, if I could just find mine. I searched an hour for it yesterday. I fear it will turn up in the freezer or something. The protective goggles (you need that too!) were beside the keyboard where I thought I had put the torch too.

There is is some disagreement about if enough UV could be reflected to be harmful. And 365nm isn't that harmful to begin with. But I take no chances, so I wear goggles.

Interesting! Our torches must have different wavelengths.

Yeah, it could be. Do you know what flower it is?

Ah, so they can be white. And even pink.

Anemone, that explains why the leaves look like vitsippa, wood anemone.

What a great idea, Charlotte. I like the results. You're right about being careful where to point it. The orange looks neat, but definitely not tasty. I bet you ate it anyway. 🤮 Rich
Sure did.It was very tasty. 🤤

I have a lot of ideas in my head, but now I have misplaced the torch. At least I know it's in here somewhere, I haven't taken it outside.

Very summery! That caste looks like it's still in use. That's nice.

This is the same installation sculpture as the very first post, but viewed from the side. As you can see, it resembles a lantern fish. This is what I like about this place, if you zoom out with your feet, it looks like the gestalt of one thing, and if you go way in, you can see little painstaking relationships that the artists have created. There are about 100 of them, too, to create something consistent I think shows an unusual amount of thought and talent. Only had limited time on the time I was there, and would like to go back some day for closer to a full day.

The sculpture itself is HUGE too, you can stand inside it and it about the size of a kitchen in the mouth part.

Some more from Smither's Park.

The DPreview servers seem to be treating me kindly today.

I'm not sure what it is, but some days it can be real ornery and the upload clock will just keep spinning and I eventually give up and have to reload and try again. One day it must have taken 10 tries.

My internet is working for everything else just fine so I do think it's the server; maybe the company that bought the site has some bandwidth issues.
