Like many other Mac/Nikon users I'm waiting for a fix for the problems with Nikon Transfer under Panther. The 10.3.1 upgrade moved it along a bit – now the yellow box with the arrow does come up now – but stops before doing anything.

I like using Nikon Transfer for importing images as its the only way I know to change the prefix etc as you import, otherwise you get the Nikon DSC and have to rename the images another way.

Two Questions:

1. has anyone found another import method which allows you to change the prefix etc as you bring the images in?

2 Has anyone managed to get Nikon Transfer to work properly with Panther?

Thanks, any answers greatly appreciated.

Sorry, also meant to ask whose problem is it (apart from the mug consumers) Apple or Nikon? I haven't actually asked either of them but would suspect the finger pointing will go both ways.

Calvin,

iView MediaPro has an import function that will rename files on import, including changing prefixes. It also has a batch rename functuion you can run on files after the fact. Plus its an outstanding image organizing & slideshow program. It beats the socks off of iPhoto, as far as I'm concerned.

I'm still running Jaguar, so I don't know for sure about Panther support. If you check iView Multimedia's site I'm sure they'll say if they support Panther yet or not. They're a Mac only shop, so I'd be stunned if they didn't...

iview is OK, but the new version isn´t an improvement, rather the opposite. Even the old one runs on Panther.

An excellent application for just renaming (it is a standalone program) is ExifRenamer

http://www.qdev.de/?location=mac/exifrenamer

It is very fast, very configureable, and very easy to use... and it is FREE (donationware, to be accurate). Highly recommended! I´ve used it for half a year, now on a G5 with 10.3.1, and it runs perfectly.

I've actually been using iView MediaPro for quite a while now and I agree with you re being better than iPhoto – no contest.

Obviously I hadn't explored the program enough as I didn't know about either of the features you mentioned. I've now found the batch rename feature but I still can't find the renaming files on import. I know there's an Annotations selection in the import window but I can't find the rename section. I'll keep looking but if you could point the way I'd appreciate it. BTW I'm using version 1.5.7, have you used version 2 yet?

Thanks again for the info.

If you know anyone using the Fuji S2 and Fuji's FinePix Viewer software, take a look at that. It has other limitations, but the batch functions (roation, renaming, etc), slide shows, and more work great on Jaguar. I don't know if it will rename images on downloading, but it works great once they are onboard your computer.

Actually, it looks like I remembered wrong. I thought I remembered a rename on import option, but in looking at the import options, it appears I was mistaken. I think I must have been remembering the import feature in Nikon Capture. Sigh...

I'm using version 2. Unlike some others on these boards, I'm pretty happy with version 2. The JPEG rotate function is now blazingly fast, which is a help for me, and it now processes Nikon raw files on my desktop Mac properly. (Before it would crash that machine if I tried to display them at screen size.)

There are also a number of very helpful UI improvements in 2.0.
