The Verge article about A7Rv ergonomics

Hello, sounds like a good idea. Does it stick to the grip on its own or did you glue it to the grip? Is it removable and reattach able? Looks like it will shield the IR sensor which is at the top side of the grip. I need the sensor for my IR remote control. A IR remote control is easier for me than via smartphone and crappy sony app...

Doesn't block the IR sensor.
It sticks to the grip. Easily removable. Depends on how you mold/shape it can clip back on. Mine does it. Took two attempts to get the right fitting I liked. If you want it more secure I'd put a dab of hotglue or some lite adhesive.

The IR sensor is at position 3 right in the upper middle of the grip and will be covered. I will give it a try to cut out a small window at the sensor position after modeling.

I see. You have A7RIII. IR is at position 3 on the grip. In that case you'll have to create an opening with your mold while it is still soft. Shouldn't that hard.

My A7RV IR sensor moved to position 7

The only thing that bothers me is the stud - everything is fine the way it is. With heavier lenses, it feels a bit more empty in the hand without a vertical grip but that's to be expected - just held a D810 in my hand and it has exactly the same problem.

No denying it though, the D810 does feel nicer. Don't miss the weight and bulk though.

I have girlish hands though (XS glove size) so I find Sony bodies to be just right in terms of the grip/lens clearance.

Thermoplastic becomes moldable like playdoh at 150-160F. Lots of brands available on AMZN, all the same material and popular with cosplay DIY projects.

Pretty easy to handle. Submerge in bowl of hot water to soften. Put some on the grip. Mold to hand shape by holding camera naturally. Hardens in a few minutes. If you mess up submerge again.

Sony's grip notch was too deep for my taste. Prefer it more subtle like other cameras. Filled it with some thermoplastic and also thicken the lower grip slightly. Grip is super comfortable now.

Best part it comes off easily like a mouthguard/retainer and snap back on again. Can take it off when my spouse uses the A7RV.
Just to update

Custom grip mold still holding and working well. I need to learn 3D printing to make this look nicer. Maybe I could try buying replacement faux leather skin and cover it up. Does the part even exist?

X-H2 newly released, excited to upgrade my X-H1 but was disappointed by AF improvements. At the time A7RV had the features I dreamed like a X-H3 of the future.

Slapped on a Fujifilm label so friends/family wouldn't inquire of the switch. (it worked)

I rebrand often for fun. Just like my "Huffy" bicycle 😉

I mostly ignore ergo comments. The key is the user has to adapt to the product. I don't know why they expect to use the same grip for different size bodies lol.

Like I see pinkie grips for the compact bodies, that defeats the purpose of the compact body. I hold them by flattening my fingers onto the grip instead of gripping it like a handle. Similarly for other bodies. Reviewers need to learn how it's supposed to be used instead of trying to reshape it to another body.

I have smaller bodies than the A7CR and can hold them no problem. The grip shape on the A7CR pushes my hand down too far. The grip extension converts it from hard to hold to one of the most comfortable bodies I own. Maybe Sony make the extension part of the standard kit for a reason.

Other than that, I agree that you can adapt to a variety of body shapes. I don’t shoot one-handed except with tiny lenses, so it’s not that hard.

Since this is all about vague and anecdotal evidence, and potential dead horse beatings... A7R4 here, 5'11, long but skinny fingers, can barely palm a basketball, I'm at 180-something pounds IIRC... Haven't had an issue with knuckles scraping against my lenses, even with gloves or while using my 50-400 or 135/1.8, and I definitely haven't had any blisters or discomfort on my index/shutter finger.

My pinky does hang loose if I'm not using an add-on, which is a non issue with smaller lenses. With larger ones I do like using the fold out pinky/palm support on my STC Optics L plate. It's not terribly essential once I've already brought the camera up to shooting position and I'm using both hands, but it does help when lifting the camera up with a front heavy lens.

YMMV

Indeed, MMDV

Last year I went into a camera store and tried the A7C with the PZ 4/16-35, and the first thing I realized were my knuckles scraping against the lens. Sadly they didn't have a A7C2 at the time, but it put me off the idea of getting one.

One of the fears I had prior to moving to A7IV and into e-mount from A-mount, was the ergo of the E-mount cameras. Sony A-mount SLTs, coming from the lineage of the old Minolta Maxxum bodies, was that their body design are very utilitarian and feels purposeful, physical dials, buttons, vs menus and other thing. They don't look as slick but they feel good to use. E-Mount Sony leaned into the compact dimension of the mirrorless design and they basically made everything like 75% size of the old SLR bodies. I thought I'd hate it, but honestly now 2 years in, I don't really mind it at all. When I go back to hold my A77II and it just seem big and bulky. Sony also made all their lenses smaller where it made sense, which I think helped in that respect. I also I think value the compact size a lot more now that I am expanding my shooting actitivties from just motorsports, which often means long telephoto zooms and monopod, so compact size isn't really a concern, but now I travel more and having a smaller camera is a lot more appreciated.

My first camera was a box with two lenses on the front and a viewfinder that you looked down into to see out front! What happened to picking up the camera, figuring out how to shoot and shooting?

My dad gave me his old Rolleiflex when I was a kid and I found it a lot of fun to use. It was also cumbersome and awkward. When I got my first SLR, I felt like I was in the promised land.

Since the A1II felt so comfortable to hold I tried to mimic the design. Redid my previous grip mold and used 1/10th less thermoplastic.

To my surprise it now feels very similar in comfort. Sometime forget which body I am holding.

The a7riii and the za 24-70/4 did that to me. Worked fine on the a7rii, and is fine on the a7rv. Some combinations just don’t work - hand size, grip placement, lens… it all factors in.

I have no knowledge of these "problems" he is talking about. A personal thing, obviously.

Not the NV GF RTX sticker... 😂
