Andy,

I just wanted to add my appreciation of the effort that you put forth -- I'm truly awed by the endeavor!

My mom passed away in May '02, and it's heartwrenching. I recently discovered digital scrapbooking (never had time or patience for the paper version) and am working on digital scrapbooks for members of my family. It won't begin to approach the magnitude of your project, of course, but I know the sentiment will be there. I am just learning about putting everything on DVD as a slideshow for viewing on TV. You've just inspired me all over again to get the project finished, as I'd like to give them out over the holidays.

I know your family will appreciate your special gift over and over again through the years.

Dang Andy, now I've got tears in my eyes! What a heart warming story.... simply wonderful!

Wow, hHuge amount of work. That's a great project you did. I'm sure it was as rewarding at it was long :) That DVD collection was a great idea.

as many of you know, i spent several months after my mom passed
away in february sorting through, scanning, editing and cataloging
over 15,000 family photos going back over 100 years. it was quite
a project. i ended up with over 1500 final images, the best of
the best
. in addition, i used a program called microsoft
photostory to create slide shows set to music. i made over 22
different slide shows, all different themes (pretty woman, studs,
halloween, fishing, drive my car, sports, graduations, weddings,
birthdays, christmas, much more). i then put the slide shows on a
dvd so that the computer challenged in my family could enjoy them
as well. i combined that dvd with a data cd of the 1500 images and
packaged it all up in a dvd case, with a photo montage for the
cover - and then handed each member of the family (30 of them!) a
copy at thanksgiving this year.

the response was overwhelming. there wasn't a dry eye in the house
after i played the first slideshow, all about our mom. the music
for this story featured the four tops' "climb every mountain" and
josh groban's "to where you are" which are incredibly moving.
after everyone composed themselves, things picked up a bit as the
more fun shows came on. needless to say, it gave me a very good
feeling that the hard work (over 400 hours on this project) paid
off. i've been getting phone calls from everyone in the family
("where did you get that picture!!??* heh heh...

oh - i also have all the photos online at smugmug - usually they
are in private galleries but for the time being, while my galleries

thru time. I had to laugh, I have some pictures from the early 20s and even some of the poses look the same!

We did a video tape (not everyone in the family has a CD player or DVD players) for my grandson's first year and are almost done with his second year. It's a lot of work as we include video and stills. Using a Mac made the process very easy, but we pushed iMovie to the limit and got Final Cut Express so we could do more.

I have a gazillion photos to scan or photograph. I'm not sure which way is best to do this.

Then there are the thousands and thousands of slides and prints (before digital) that my husband and I have taken -- then there's the thousands and thousands of digital files I have.

It does all come down to the people in the long run which will help me weed thru the many photos. No one will be interested in the pretty flowers I photograph, but they will be interested in that photo of my husband at the beach, etc.

I think it's marvelous we have all these software packages available to us so we can include titles and notes about the photos as well as scans of important papers like a wedding license and birth certificates for historical purposes.

But 400 hours? That's all? I totally believe it. LOL! I'm not sure if your family realizes how much hard and tedious work it was to accomplish what you did. Thank you for allowing us to see the albums on your website too!

And how long did it take to record all those DVDs???

You're an inspiration to us all.

thanks so much, lisa! you'll find that dpreview is a fantastic place to learn anything you need for this project. don't forget about the "pctools" forum and the "retouching" forum. i got tons of help from fellow dpreview-ers there!

let me know if i can be of assistance!

lol - when i started, it was right after mom passed away - i was at mom and dad's house - going thru stuff with my dad, and came upon boxes of pics - and i said "dad, i could scan these"... well, that snowballed to an effort that included thousands and thousands of photos. oy vey. then the genealogy part - that was fun too, tracing my family back to the 1500s. i put that part up on my website, too ;> the family really appreciates it.

thanks for the kind words, have an excellent day!

andy
torward you Andy.

It is truly a monumental task you have accomplished. A task few to
none are willing to tackle. When starting out on this project, did
you have any idea that it would end up taking more than 400 hours
of your time. Would you have done it anyway if you have known !?.

I believe each and everyone of the 30 family members owe you a nice
present under the Christmas tree this year.

Thanks for sharing the warm story and the family's galleries.

thank you, bill - for the well wishes and kind words.

have a great day!

I'm sorry about your Mom. Andy. You will never regret what you did
and now the whole family will have these great "Memory Joggers".
You must feel pretty proud of yourself! I have done much smaller
shows of 70th b-days, etc and everyone always loves them. Bravo!!!

This sounds absolutely amazing. Your mom had all reasons to be proud of her son. Hard to imagine better memorial.

hey lori,
Andy:
Thank you for letting us visit your family gallery. It is very
nice. It sounds like your family appreciates your talent and
careful preservation of the past. And you are kind to share the
photos with everyone in the family.. that is great.
it's my pleasure! i'm pleased you liked the galleries.
I am so sorry to hear about your mother. I shutter at the thought
of what kind of sorrow that must be. Your mother's photography
style sounds like me. Always with a camera. I have my pictures
into albums and negs stored in their boxes before you can turn
around. I have done this since 1974.. as a mere teenager. If you
don't keep them organized, what a mess you will have!! :) I have
amazed people by being able to pull out a negative to reprint for
them, in less than a minute. (Don't ask me about my other
housecleaning habits...)

I am also a genealogist, and have been for 20 years. I started out
with PAF then went to Family Tree Maker. I particularly like
scanning photos, census records, marriage licenses and the like,
into the program. At any point, you can print a pretty slick
book... it does impress the family. :)
that's great... i've been using legacy family tree - i found it first, i guess and that's why i use it. i went back to the 1500's on my dad's side of the family and then stopped for a while... there's a link to my genealogy on my smugmug site at the bottom, and also some more stuff on my personal site, linked as well at the bottom of http://williams.smugmug.com
I am going to check into the Microsoft album maker. (Or whatever
you called it, now I can't get back to the post to look at the
name)
it's called microsoft photostory, part of microsoft plus! digital media edition. i think it costs $20. check out http://www.microsoft.com

Did you make the montages there as well or was that in PS?

lol - i made the montages in ps elements, back this spring when i had no ps skills! just used the photomerge feature. they're pretty lame (no editing really at all, lots of broken lines etc) but my family really appreciated them and i gave them out as gifts printed as 8x10s... i'll make them more professionally now, that 's for sure ;>
I had held out to buy a DVD player until I knew which one to buy so
that I could do just what you have done, create CD's to play on the
DVD. What brand/model do you suggest, or is there just a
particular feature I need to look for?
see the above post, good information there so i don't need to repeat it;>

have an excellent day!

Great job Andy! I remember when my great Uncle passed away. He lived in a house that my great Grandparents lived in. When they went through the house, they found a emormous amount of old photos in several large boxes in the attic. Many lost to a 100 years of no protection and hot moist air in the attic. But I do remember it taking my family months to seperate them all and find out who was who. It was too early for the digital revolution to fix it. Scanners weren't really that good and definitely not the programs to help fix them.

You did a wonderful job! I'm sure you feel both proud and somewhat releaved (that you are finished), about your project! Thanks for sharing.

I'll bet Colonel Mustard did it, in the kitchen, with an 828!

well done, greg! vvery cool. it's a very special thing isn't it.

the cool part, is that from now on, since i'm the designated family photographer, all the new stuff just goes into the family archives straight from my digital camera;> no more scanning! yeah...

andy
I begged that all of my family send me their family photo albums
about 3 years ago. I digitaized everything and returned the photos
to all the owners. This Christmas, they will all be getting a 400+
image "complete" photo album of all of the family. Never have all
these images been in one place at one time. I have givien one
album to my Mom here in Jacksonville and she teared up several
times.
