First images from the RF 24-105mm f2.8. Wonderful lens - love it. The zoom ring is smooth (changing focal length with just the thumb is a breeze). You know it is a good lens, when only minimum editing of the RAW inages are required. The focal length is excellent for street photography. Purposely only have this lens with me today and it works out fine. No other lens required for this type of photography. Wasn't bother by the size and weight of the lens. Cheers.

If I were a working pro, that would be my default lens. But as I hobbyist, I'll make do instead with the RF24-105/4LIS. My days of carrying a drainpipe are in the past.

The other thing is that I don't want too much blur in my environmental portraits.

Hi AbuMahendra, nice images from Bali.

I see you are from Bali, Indonessia. I am from Sarawak, Malaysia. But living in Toronto, Canada. Hoping one day to visit Indonesia to photograph your beautiful culture. I have never owned a 24-105mm f4 or 24-70mm f2.8 lens. The decision to get the RF 24-105mm f2.8 is easy. And glad I did - such a vesatile lens. Cheers.

Hi, Bruce. I only live in Bali; I am not from here. I've actually been to Sarawak, to Kuching. Love the Laksa.

Wow, the river walk image brings back good memories. I was in Kuching at the end of 2023. Visiting classmates from 52 years ago. I made a YouTube video of the visit. You can find it on my YouTube channel from 1 year ago.

Cheers and have a pleasant evening.

Street photography is a difficult genre.

In my opinion, for Canon, the EF 28mm f/2.8 IS USM or EF 35mm f/2.0 IS USM are the best prime lenses for it, but the RF 28mm pancake and 35mm f/1.8 IS stm might work as well.

As the best inconspicuous zoom I would vote for the Sony FE 28-60mm. The best light gathering option would be the FE 28-45mm f/1.8 Art.

But lens selection isn't the hardest part.

I have the RF 28mm f2.8 and RF 35mm f1.8 and have not use them after acquiring the RF 24-105mm f2.8.

The Sigma 28-45mm f1.8 was my choice - but it is not available for the RF mount. But the short experience with the RF 24-105mm f2.8 have changed my preference. The RF 24-105mm f2.8 is more versatile than the Sigma. It can be the only lens I need in what I shoot. With the Sigma, I need another lens beyond 45mm.

The 24-105mm f2.8 is an amazing lens for both photography and video.

Get it before the tariff kicks in.

That's true for me as well, but for street I don't need beyond 45mm.

I'm in Europe, camera gear isn't produced in the USA, so I'm fine.

Lovely views. Definitely a difference in Look between the f/2.8 and f/4. Weight won't be a problem when photography is the primary consideration! Thanks for sharing!

Looking at the photos, these two street shooters are using a Lot more of the range. 24-105 f/2.8L IS is a wonderful choice IMHO.

For some purist that's not within certain definitions of street photography.

And even if you would use a longer focal length f/2.8 isn't giving you enough DOF anyway.

I have the 24mm and when a longer reach is needed, the crop mode gives me 168mm. That's why the 24-105mm lens is so versatile. Now I have 24mm all the way to 168mm in one lens, all at f2.8
Well, the 168mm is f/4.5 equivalent, but the versatility is huge nonetheless.
When a fast lens for low light is needed, my RF 35mm f1.8 and RF 85mm f1.2 primes come in handy. One more fast lens wider than 24mm is all the lens I need. Prehaps the new RF 20mm f1.4
20mm is nice imo. 15 of 16mm is often too wide. 24mm nor here or there, but in emergency cases you can fit things in a frame. I like 28mm well better for perspective. But that's all just personal preference of course.
Does this make my RF 70-200mm f2.8 redundant?
For me, 120 or 135mm is enough, I don't need a 70-200mm for the rest of the range. 105mm is also a lot better than just 70mm.

Thanks R2D2.

In Canada it is currently selling for US $2765 before Tax.

B&H is showing "Temporarily Out of Stock" - a rush to buy this lens before the tariff kicks in?

Sorry correction, not the RF 24-105mm f2.8. It is the RF 70-200mm f2.8 Z version not is out of stock.

For some purist that's not within certain definitions of street photography.
???? Tell that to the photographers!

Just look at the photos that were posted. It really doesn't matter if those series don't fall under your definition of "street." The images reflect what they like to shoot.
And even if you would use a longer focal length f/2.8 isn't giving you enough DOF anyway.
Not sure what you're getting at (it's contradictory as written).

I actually really liked the amount of DOF in the OP's images. Made me rethink my own roadmap. Beside, one can always stop down for increased DOF (but they sure can't do it the other way around!).

I think we can agree that the traditional concept of Street does not encompass a zoom lens that weighs 1.4kg and is 20cm long. People are, of course, free to shoot however they want.

Is there a definition that's different to taking pictures on the street? (It's a genuine question as that would be the obvious one to me).
