Nikon Z50 II and Nikon Z 70-200 F2.8 VR S auto focus issues

I can see the following reasons for the sharpness problems:
  • Heat waves from caused by the lens hood. It may be heated up by the field lights. This happens for example in winter conditions combined with sunshine and black lens hoods.
  • Shooting through plexiglass
  • Shooting with electronic shutter or EFCS in combination with some LED lighting
Hope that helps..

Are you using a filter? There is no reason to do so in your shooting situation.

Please tell us you are NOT using a polarizing filter!

And I doubt any filter you buy will be made with plexiglass. Oven the cheapest filters are made with real glass.

I'm not seeing any obvious front or back focusing going on. Have you tested the lenses in better light on high contrast subjects?

Can you share links to the RAW images of your samples? That way we can review them in NX Studio.

Tips for low light with mirrorless:
  • I have the best luck with Wide L people
    • C1 can be sized to fit the subject.
    • I think you're too far away for eye detection, unfortunately Nikon no longer has face only detection (last seen in the Z6/Z7,) so I think it works harder than it should have to.
  • Turn show preview in viewfinder OFF.
    • experiment with star/low light (I find it useful if it is much darker.)
  • Use a BW or high contrast picture control (shoot RAW)
  • Turn off ADL and flicker control, anything else you don't need.
    • I prefer to apply NR in post with better software.
  • IMO, and some others, ETTR is outdated, underexpose a bit.

PS I'd include a sample from your D7100 in the same conditions/settings.

I see that you have a Z6III, I have the same duo, and that would be what I would use. Have you tested the 70-200S on the Z6III at a game?

No, but for example at hockey games, there are sometimes plexiglass walls for safety.
