Sony is finally developing a new RX100 VIII model, after 6 years of no new releases. With unprecedented demand surging for high end digital compact cameras, Sony has decided to reopen it's interest in compacts and will be developing additional RX models.

Here are the key specs for the RX100 VIII:

24-300mm F2.8-F5.6 lens

USB Type-C 3.2 Terminal port

UHS-II Card Slot with full V90 support

Full XAVC S, XAVC HS, XAVC S-I, H.264, H.265 support with bit rates up to 600 Mbps

Internal side fan vent to help with heat dissipation

Brighter, higher resolution screen

New, higher tech "X2" battery for longer battery life

Sony has squeezed everything into the Mark 8 body that’s virtually the same size as the past M7 model, weighing only 22g more and being 3mm thicker.

The MSRP is set to be around $1,979.99 USD.

As a user of an RX100M7 I like the added hardware zoom potential and the brighter screen.

However the miniaturised far extending zoom lens has proven to be its weak point in my usage case where I often take only a single picture for a full extension - retraction cycle.

The guidance rubbers of the tubular elements don't like certain weather conditions in South East Asia and have partially come out. Lubrification from the start may be needed to have this survive as a true classic.

And better to never drop or bump it.

Wishlist:

-40-100 megapixel sensor with pixel per pixel performance potential of the old versions AND added smarter digital zoom allowing up to RX10 level thanks to Digixeon AI III Max processor with fancy offline learning algoritms that provide clean zoom by combining pixels resulting in 5 to 23mPix resulting files.

-Allow zoom while focus is held!

-Haptics of lens ring

-Better menu structure jeeded: so many useful things, so hurtful to bring them upfront when needed: (voice based) search function, please no more "unavailable function" because "other function (where the hell) is enabled! Voice commands sound unreasonable / unfeasible but so is this endless menu browsing.

-More sturdy port covers, USB port upgrade welcome.

-Better dust resistance lens and "grain of sand width" clearance between lens cover and ftont element.

Etc..

See you for in the cursed year of 2030 ;-)

I guess some people are amused by April Fool's Day (even though it is the 2nd of the month in some parts of the world when this was posted).
There's a really good one on the Canon R forum The post and the replies made me chuckle.

If you are going to do an April fool joke do it right. See edits below.

Here are the key specs for the RX100 VIII:

1-1,000,000,000,000,000,000mm F 0.00000001 lens

Unlimited Quantum memory that will beam photos at 1 septillion TB per microsecond.

Full XAVC S, XAVC HS, XAVC S-I, H.264, H.265 support with bit rates up to 6,000,000,000,000 Mbps

Quantum processor that produces no heat and is as powerful as all the existing computational power in the world combined.

1 trillion-megapixel .00001" sensor that produces no noise at all. When zoomed in to 100% subatomic particles are clearly visible. Resolution limited only by the wavelength of light.

matter/anti matter power source that will last 10 billion years.

Camera is the size of the head of a pin and is controlled by mental telepathy.

The camera is free.

If you wanted an Rx100 VII for "cheap", you're too late. Sony, Amazon, Adorama, etc just jacked the price (in the USA) from $1300 to $1500. We know who to thank for that.

Sounds like price gouging since the Tariffs haven't been in place long enough to raise wholesale prices.

I can't disagree. I assume it's MAP pricing, with the retailers following Sony's pricing. Manufacturer says prices go up, they raise the prices because it's part of their agreement. There's nothing that happened this week that should jack up the price $200 on stuff that's already here and sitting in a distribution center, but that's not going to stop retailers from making extra cash while they can.

A friend of me just told me that the price of a bottle of Hornitos tequila (100% agave, but lowish-end) went up $5 this week. Again, it's stock that's already on hand. I expect these price gouging examples aren't limited to cameras and booze.

Looking hard at the date of the original post might shed a little light.

Also look hard at the bad clone of the third "I" from the original VII

Odd spacing of last I which is an exact duplicate of the second I.

A feeble April 1 joke that doesn't fool anybody as we all know that there will never ever be any more RX100 series.

You just joined yesterday, and your only post is bashing Sony. No more need be said.

This got me wondering: have any other cameras, from Sony or any other manufacturer, ever reached a Mark VIII model?

The only ones I can think of are cell phones.

If by some miracle they ever did release a RX100M8, it wouldn't surprise me at all if it was basically 2K. Because there's no competition anymore + tariffs.
