Hello

I got a z8 a couple of months ago and have been editing the pictures on my pc. Soon I will be traveling for a month and will need a laptop to do this. My currently laptop is ancient and is crashing with the z8 files so I am looking for a new laptop. I am not after anything fancy, just a laptop that can edit the z8 files fast usnig the last lightrom version. My budget is under $1k. What would you guys recomend? Thanks

If you're a COSTCO member, they have Republic of Gamers laptops that have everything you need. Fast, lots of memory and strong graphics card.

This will work wonderfully for you. Most all editing software is available for Arm now and it's really powerful for image work. It's lighter than the MBA, has a better display, better battery life and around the same price.

I'm not clear as to what machine you're referring to; one of the Windows ARM laptops?

Unfortunately, Lightroom Classic does NOT run ARM native, and will be emulated. Not ideal. It will run but features like AI Denoise / Enhance will not work or will be very, very slow.

Any <$1000 current model PC with at least 16GB of ram will probably work fine, but you will have to pay more for a model with a GPU that can effectively use the AI Denoise features.

Good color gamut (100% DCI-P3) on the OLED screen!

Notebookcheck says single-core performance is subpar, which would not be good for Lightroom. Have you seen availability of the same model with Snapdragon Plus? I have not.

https://www.notebookcheck.net/Asus-...pdragon-X-only-weighs-978-grams.955023.0.html

Instead, I would suggest Notebookcheck's 2nd rated gaming system, which is a far better value than their top rated gaming system. Only $1300 at BestBuy.

Really, they don't have their software optimized for arm yet? wow.

I have a 2 years old Vivobook 14X OLED with i9-13900H CPU and RTX 2050 GPU and according to this test

https://www.topcpu.net/en/cpu-c/qualcomm-snapdragon-x-x1-26-100-vs-intel-core-i9-13900h

the lowest model Snapdragon doesn't seem overwhelming

PS: my Vivobook is good enough for travel and weekends but no speed monster.

I would choose a better GPU, the CPU is performant enough but suffers from thermal throttling in the small case.

I suggested that machine as it is currently the lightest 14 inch notebook released (the OP said he wanted it for travel) and the fact that it has 32 hrs of battery life. Again, great for travel.

If he suggested he wants all out speed demon, I would suggest a different model.

If you live in the US, here is a list of gaming laptops from B&H. They are not light, but they should be able to do most, if not all, of the stuff you throw at them. Based on the spec, I like the $1149 (a bit over your price, 4.96 lb / 2.25 kg + power adapter weight), MSI 15.6" Katana 15 Gaming Laptop. It has, the stuff you care about:
  • 32GB DDR5 RAM | 1TB M.2 PCIe 4.0 SSD
  • 15.6" 2560 x 1440 165 Hz IPS Display (100% DCI-P3)
  • NVIDIA GeForce RTX 4070 (8GB GDDR6)

Wow indeed. They do have Photoshop and Lightroom (not-classic) on native ARM but not Lightroom. I would love to have an ARM based PC, but Lightroom Classic is my must-have requirement.

I cannot comment further however, I have moved on happily. I would have the surface laptop with 64gb of ram if I could find some concrete video editing performance from one. Everything is using either the pro or some low spec X elite system.

Nobody has got a review of the 64gb x version of a laptop doing video / photo editing work out there. That's all I am waiting on.

Nice machine, but the linked laptop just had a hefty 30% increase from $1149 to $1499.
