Insect and flower challenge

It is interesting to count how many times OM cameras figure in the insect and flower challenge,

Quite remarkable
No guarantee of accuracy, but a quick run-through gave me:

Olympus 17
Nikon 15
Canon 13
Sony 7
Panasonic 4
Pentax 3
Fujifilm 1

10 out of 10 for going through them.

I do like macro from OM. I used to use OM film cameras with OM lenses, which I still use on Canon

Thanks

I had the bugs spawn on regular old roses that I had left planted in the garden when the event started. They were from my "friends." 9apps tutuapp

There were 60 entries noted above. If the proportion of gear were based on aggregate sales in the market, OM-System would land somewhere between Pentax and Fuji--1-to-3.

The m43 forum is active and there are quite a few nature photographers posting there. OM gear has some advantages over other brands with this genre--the 90mm being one advantage. There are some advantages with the long telephotos as well. There are a few very accomplished macro photographers posting there. Many m43 forum participants are also active in the challenges. Traffic on this site has dropped quite a bit over the past couple of years, but it seems to have dropped off less on the m43 forum (no data to back this up)

There was a Bug and Flower challenge about 7 months ago in which OM had very high participation rates. There was also a Big Year challenge at the same time with high OM participation rates. The OM gear not only had high participation rates but dominated the top 10 scores. I was wondering if someone found a way to game the scoring. Interesting find in the finished Insect and Flower thread: Challenge Discussions Forum: Digital Photography Review

I have looked at the some of the OM participation rates since the challenges from 7 months ago, particularly the bird challenges. There are some challenges that have very high rates of OM participation and very high finishes. Sony and Nikon seem to do very well in these challenges in terms of participation and finishes. Canon seems to lag behind which is a bit surprising given its large market share. Based on very little information, I have come to the conclusion that the m43 users are active in certain nature/wildlife photography areas and choose to participate in the challenges.

As for the voting TaSad has documented any number of instances of cheating--multiple accounts used to sway the voting or manipulating EXIF information. I don't think he has reported any instances of cheating with the Big Year or bugs and flowers challenges.

In this Big Year 2025 challenge :

The cheaters are everywhere.

Thanks for the information.

composition, light and colour had 8 out of the first 11 were OM/Olympus

Yeah, I’ve noticed that too, OM cameras really seem to shine in those kinds of shots. Impressive how often they show up!

That's interesting. In fact, I am one of the M43 participants in the Light Composition challenge. Maybe because M43 light weight and 2x reach factor are most suitable for such type of photography. I am not a wildlife photographer but definitely pick up the hobby again since I got the M43 because of weight. Previously, with DSLR, during a stroll, I sometimes do not want to take it out from my backpack...
