Hello everyone,

I'm looking to add an additional street photography lens for the GFX 100S ii. Currently I have GF20-35mmF4 R WR for landscape, but need additional lens for street photography. Any suggestion which lens should I go for.

GF45-100mmF4 R LM OIS WR or GF55mmF1.7 R WR.

Thank you in advance.

IMO the GF lens that is closest to ideal for street is the 50/3.5. If it weren’t for the fact that I have an X-Pro3 which gives enough detail for my needs, I’d still have the 50mm for this purpose.

Fujifilm in many countries runs a "loan" scheme where you pay a deposit ( cost of lens) and they send you the lens chosen for 3 days free hire. Which lens to use is such a personal thing and so style dependant that only using the things will answer your question.

I thought I would go 20 - 35, 45 - 100 , and 100 - 200 ......

However the 45 - 100 is for me too long for a walk around , the 100 - 200 I returned at the end of my loan ( 3 weeks) and have no intention to buy. If your style is low light moody places, then look for a prime - 50 1.7 perhaps or 45 2.8. If you are a zoom guy and don't want to mess with lens changes and can live with f 4 , perhaps try the 32 - 64 f4.

Only you will know and can decide...... I will say there are quite a lot of great quality, hardly used lenses on second hand sale , where buyers have not tried before buying and lost good money on near new mistakes.

Here's my take.

1) Decide whether you want a zoom or not. Do you shoot a range of focal lengths for street work and need to change between them quickly? Do you want to avoid cropping in post? If so, get the 45-100 and accept that it's a big heavy lens. If not, proceed to #2.

2) Decide what is your favorite focal length and pick the 45, 50, or 63 based on that. If you really want the smallest lens, the 50 would be it, but I think all 3 of these are easy to hand-hold so that's not an important distinction for me.

Both the lenses you picked would work very well however It depends how old you are and or if you can support a heavy lens all day and still be alive the next day. In my case my 50 3.5 would be the one I would pick It is the lightest GF lens is inconspicuous has great AF and with your 100S ii you can crop to your hearts content.

I prefer a prime lens for street photography and since the GF 45mm is great lens and I already own it this would be my choice. If I didn't already own it I would also seriously consider the 50mm/f3.5 that has already been suggested.

I don't know which one of the two that has the fastest AF but this is something to consider when choosing. The 55 is to large and heavy and I suspect it's AF is slower as well.

OK

Thank you everyone for an input. I'll pick up a GF50mm3.5 R LM WR.

This will be for travel and street photography.

I have shot street with the GF 45mm, GF 50mm, GF 63mm and the GF 35-70mm. The zoom is very light and the focal lengths align well with angles of view that are often used for street photography. Any of those lenses would probably work well for you. I tend to prefer the 50mm because I have a PolarPro Shortstache Everyday Filter (diffusion/polarizer) installed that is useful for daytime shooting. The filter is easy to adjust since the 50mm lens hood attaches via threads vs bayonet.

You are going to love this lens!!

I think for street work, you want an inconspicuous rig. So the 50 GF is a great choice. It's also a nice focal length for street work.
