I am a long time user of Photoshop but this has me stumped.

I am left handed and have the tool panels down the left hand side of my monitor in Photoshop. It used to be when I opened images they would open in the middle of the screen but there was an update a while back and now they open under the panel and portrait mode images require dragging out. It is just awkward to use.

Does anyone know how to get the images to open the other side of the tools panels or on the right hand side of the screen.

Any help would be appreciated.

Thank you so much for your efforts John. I did as you said and realized my tools where docked but not the others. Lesson learned.

My images now open as I want them too.

I really appreciate you clear and precise instructions.

I'm not sure, but try this:

Hi jj10

That sure sounds like the tools panel is undocked. In those cases, images can slip under that panel.

To prevent that, the tools panel needs to be redocked. Grab the tools panel at the top portion, where you can move it around, and then move it against the left edge. When it is up against the edge, the new versions of PS will turn blue along the edge. When this occurs, release the mouse from the drag operation, which will be docked to the edge. Once locked in, the document panel will not go under the tools panel.

I hope this solves the probem and that this is helpful

Yes, sounds like that might be it.

Thanks for this advice. That was the first thing I did long before my post here. It has not worked.

Let me say I may not have detailed my problem well enough. In addition to the Tools I have my navigation panel, Actions panel and Layers panel down the left side up against the Tool panel. Images open past the tool panel but under the Layers panel etc. It used to be that files opened past both tool and layers panel.

I just redid the docking again but it is the same result.

I know I can set my preferences for Tabs but I open up to 25 or more files at once and prefer to work with floating files as I find them easier to work with.

Hi jj10

Maybe these extra pictures will help you debug what is going on. Pay attention to the "x" or lack of "X" in the upper left corner

In this first panel, there are two main groups side by side. both have an X in the upper left corner. That means neither is docked to the side or to each other. Images will slide underneath both of them

In this case, there is no X in the upper left of the tool bar. That means it is doced to the left side yet the Navigator and Actions Group means that it is not docked with the tools group. In this case, images will go under the Navigation group yet over the tools group

In this last case, neither have the X in the upper left corner meaning they are now all docked to the left side. If fact the act as one big super group that is docked to the left side and documents will slide over the top of both.

Now if I grab the top of that super group and pull to the right. The super group stays together yet they both undock from the left side showing the single X in the upper left. Now, images will go underneath the supergroup.

To separate the super group, back into two groups, you just drag right below the top line and they will separate and back to individual Xs for both.

Docking groups to each other or the left side always involves the bright blue line. If Xs show up, you did not grab the super group from the very top of the group.

Hope this helps some

You are more than welcome @jj10

I learned a bit putting those instructions together, realizing how easy it would be to undock accidentally. The "tell" was in the Xs :)

Hi JJ.

This is all done via WORKSPACE. You have to SET UP your Workspace.

By chance, did you CREATE a Workspace when you set up Photoshop? If you did, you could simply re-select your Workspace that you created and all you tools, palettes and workspace area should return to normal.

If you did NOT create a Workspace, then may I suggest you do, and SAVE it for the future.

These video's will show you how to create a NEW Workspace and save it for future needs.

Good Luck. Let me know if you have any other questions?

Thanks for the information. I do have workspaces but that was not the issue.

it was a docking issue as depicted by John. It is all fixed now.
