Dear all

Hi all
I’m looking for an SSD 2230 to use with type b adapter with z9
I currently using Sabrent rocket 1tb but I would like to know and try other options? As locally I don’t have access to buy the sabrent drives

( they are available for me locally with 5 years warranty)

ssd WD Black SN770M 1TB
SSD Lexar 1TB PLAY M.2 2230
SSD Crucial 1TB P310 M.2

and the
SSD Silicon Power NVMe PCIe Gen 4x4_UD90

Thank you all

I'm running a Sabrent Rocket 1TB in my Z8.

No issues so far. Seems plenty fast. I dont do video but one time i ran it just to test and after 30 minutes was when i got a hot card warning.

I'm using a Zitay adapter, fits great with no binding at all.

Someone on Reddit raved about this one: https://www.corsair.com/us/en/p/dat...ie-x4-nvme-m-2-2230-ssd-cssd-f2000gbmp600mnr2

Make sure you get Revision 2, apparently it has TLC and a better controller.

Price seems phenomenal compared to name brand cards.

Edit: Considering lots of drives slow down at 50%, this stat jumped out at me: "Speed when Cache Exhausted: approx. 1440 MB/s"

That's from the spec sheet here: https://www.techpowerup.com/ssd-specs/corsair-mp600-mini-2-tb.d2019
oh thanks for sharing.

The cache is sized at 50 GB, - which should be enough for shooting photos I believe.

I would maybe not use the WD Black drives as these are performance drives and can run a bit hot. The other ones I'm not sure about. this is based on my use of the SSDs in the computers though, as some do run hotter than others. Many SSDs though can run hot and cause hot-card warnings though as they are not really intended to be run in such enclosures or if they are, they need adequate air cooling which a camera may not provide enough of (meaning some sort of passive air cooling).

I know people like the value for money that you can get with such a setup but I feel that the potential headaches may not be worth it in the end, and buying a fast (but proven) CFE Card, like some of the Delkin Black cards may be better option even though your cost per GB is not as good.

I've had good luck with the Sabrent Rocket drives

I would suggest you look at the datasheets to find out what the power draw is. There can be many watts difference in power requirements, which would directly translate to heat and battery consumption

The OP might want to do this. I'm not going to since I'm not building a memory card with an SSD.

My 2TB CFexpress cards cost $380 apiece. Is that expensive?

To the replies: you guys can do what you want. I personally don't like building my own SSDs as they are not really designed for this type of task. They may work (and usually will) but I value reliability over cost per GB in many cases because my images are worth more than the savings I might get from building my own. That's just my two cents though. I also don't need much more than about 512GB anyway and frankly wouldn't want to store that much on a single card (I don't shoot video though).

And I have seen SSDs and memory cards fail, although more failures of SSDs in the past few years than memory cards (about 3 NVME SSD drives with one that lost the partition and was not recoverable, but not a total failure, and one SD card but no premade/branded CFE cards yet in the last 6-8 years).

Since Sabrent (and others) sell ultra fast CF EXpress Type B cards with Storage >1TB (mine is 2TB SABRENT Rocket CFX PRO 2TB CFexpress Type B Memory Card R1800MB/s W1700MB/s (CF-XXIT-2TB)) with excellent speed and thermal performance - Why on earth would you use a bare flash card with adapter -- cost perhaps but at the cost of overheating and other risks?

A number f folk have tried adapters with a ribbon to connect an M2 Memory but find the inconvenience of having to have the card door open AND risk of damage/disconnection unacceptably high.

Lexar 2TB GOLD Series CFexpress Type B (1500MB/s write, 1900MB/s read), supports PCIe 3.0 and NVMe.

My Zitay, and the replacement, was a disaster in a Z9.

Okay for deliberate stills, but when used on Ch or C120 etc, locked the camera up requiring a battery pull and resulting in corrupted data.

"The poor (or in my case frugal) man pays twice". Now I use an Angelbird, works correctly for all use-cases.

Exactly! Buy a $5k - $6k camera, then try to save a few dollars on the memory card? ... That's like drinking diet coke, while eating a nice big slice of Italian Cream cake ... okay, I'm guilty of that, but it's because I like Diet Coke ... so ... not really the same.

And, I'm still using XQD cards in my Z8 ... from my D500's ... so, kill me.

Hi Arnie -- it all depends on what you are shooting and the amount of data you need the card to accept. I still use proven older slower cards when I am not planning to shoot action or vids.

For stills or low fps older XQD cards are just fine - same for older SD cards in my Z8.

BUT for long burst 20fps action (like my leopards in africa) or high resolution, high def (NRAW) high fps 8.1k video shot in long takes or in the warm/hot you do need very high performance and ultra cool running cards. I performed extensive testing before my long trips to africa and ultimately "settled" on a half dozen Delkin Black 650GB as my main stay. 2 Sabrent Rocket 2 TB cards and a lot of my older slower CFE cards as back ups. Key to me was also the time required to offload shots/vids at the end of each game drive - I took 40TB of hard drives with me and was able to work fast given the read and write speed of these card.

Sorry all but my experience of Gold ProGrade cards was not good.. Their Cobalt cards are much quicker and cooler running.
