Do I need a new body? ;-)

Or perhaps just more practice with my current GX9. Some images from today. These have been processed from RAW.

Here are the SOOC JPEGs from the first two

Could the OM-3 produce something like the first two as SOOC jpegs?

All taken on a fairly modest ride of 74km with 560m of climbing. Rather cold at 3C but feels like -3C. So wearing gloves to take the photos which is a definite advantage over using my iPhone - a struggle to get it out of my pocket with gloves on let alone actually use it.

Have you seen the blurred thatching and the strong green fringing around the roof and the fox in the 1st image? The SOOC versions do not have that problem.

It seems I am pushing too far and the image falls apart in one way or another depending on what software I use. :-(

The processed RAWs look like the highlight slider has been moved down, and the shadow slider has been moved up, which give a low dynamic range look, where everything is a middle tone and kind of dull as a result, if thats the result you want most cameras can do that in their 'photo style' settings, you can certainly setup your GX9 to do that SOOC!

I could do with less rickety knees, not banged up right shoulder, not messed up lower back, not crocked ankles. 🤣 😫

Hi

In my opinion you do not need a new body, both the camera and lens you used are excellent!
I advise you keeping on practicing as much as you can, shoot, shoot and shoot some more; the more you do it the better you will get.

Second, deep the learning on using your raw editor.
If the software is Darktable, my advice is to see the YouTube videos of Bruce Williams (https://www.youtube.com/user/audio2u/videos) and specially Boris Hajdukovic (https://www.youtube.com/user/s7habo/videos ).

Best regards,

I'm not sure why you think a different body would help you with what appears to be a post-processing issue.

If you like how the jpg's look SOOC your processing isn't even close.

No I wasn't satisfied with the SOOC jpegs. The challenge was what can I do to improve the results from a rather dull day.

This is using DarkTable instead of Apple Photo

You are emphasising the colour moiré you can faintly see in the SooC images.

Post a link to the RAWs in the cloud if you want us to have a go at processing.

I doubt that any body has the level of processing options that dedicated processors have.

I must admit that I have my doubts about the lens from these, but that doesn’t seem right. The SooC images have rather obvious sharpening halos, so the processor may be inheriting too much sharpening from your jpeg settings in the EXIF.

The idea was to get something brighter out of what was a rather dull day. Not sure what the best approach is.

Mark
No best, just what is the best to you at the end of the day!

I avoid that when possible because I usually feel it flattens the picture.

With the examples I'd probably do a little of the same, maybe dialled back 50-80%.

Its a tricky one I find to balance, I usually try to only use one of either raising shadow or bringing down highlights, if more than a minor adjustment is needed.

So for instance I'd perhaps in my 'photo style' settings raise the shadows half way and see how the SOOC looks.

Just some takeaways from my time editing, but its all personal taste imo.

Actually, the SOOCs look fine to me. The PP is really overdone. Btw if you'd taken a few seconds more time framing the pictures, you wouldn't need to crop as much in post either.

Another body won't help on these points, practice will (and is money saving 😉)

You can probably tell I'm more confident using C1 than PhotoLab. I could get that green edging in PhotoLab but not in C1.

I'm thinking that the lens corrections from the EXIF that C1 uses are better than the internal ones in PhotoLab.

> more time framing the pictures

I have a dislike of converging verticals which tends to lead to foreground that is later cropped away. For the first one the rest of my group was disappearing down the road so a bit rushed.

Thank you, I will have to experiment some more. I currently have DarkTable and Affinity Photo in addition to the Apple Photos app that comes with the laptop.

Looking at those again, I’ve maybe turned off the PhotoLab lens corrections by accident and the fringing is Lateral CA.
