I am often surprised by how far I can crop. I know that some people are reluctant to crop but as a bird shooter I rarely take a picture that isn't cropped although often only minimally for composition. Below is an example of a shot that I was editing that works for me. I don't pixel peep and I'm sure It won't stand up to close inspection but I don't care because my only criteria is that it looks good to me on my screen. The first pic is the original converted to jpg with PureRaw and AP and no additional processing. The second has had additional process editing with PureRaw, AP and NIK. Taken with OM-1 and Oly100-400

I'd be very interested to see examples of how far you crop with results that satisfy you

On my monitor, your crop looks pretty over-sharpened -- you might consider backing off a bit.
You are correct. Sometimes DXO is a little too aggressive in sharpening at the default. Attached is a default WS.

Yes, that is about my approach, too. The result must look good to me on my screen and not necessarily to pixel peepers.

Here is one example of a relatively heavy crop. First the SOOC jpg, next one my crop, slightly edited with NI. 20 MP sure would have been nicer for such a crop, but my old E-5 only has 12 MP. But the lens used was pretty good, the 150/2.0, in combination with the 1.4 TC:

About crops in general: Very often my 4:3 Oly shots end up like 3:2 after cropping. Can't say I really like this 4:3 aspect ratio; 3:2 looks much better and more familiar to me, probably the result of 40 years of 3:2 film shooting. Now and then, something square 1:1 can also look pretty good.

Groups of nice big birds like in your shot is almost impossible here. It is mostly cranes on their way to and back from Scandinavia, usually flying very high! Would take more focal length than what I have.

The first image is a crop (14MP crop of the original)

So technically I zoomed in, not a crop, but y’all can imagine I did right. 😉

Personal opinion: Bryce Canyon Nation Park looks best in winter.

Yes, together with many years of 16:9 TVs and monitors, and 16:10 tablets (and a few monitors). 3:2 equates to 15:10 (or 13.5:9) so not quite as wide as 'widescreen' and as such a nice compromise, in my view.

If a crop technically works or not will strongly depend on viewing size. A pic not good enough for a 32" 4k screen may still look fantastic on a smartphone or a tablet.

My desktop screen is 23" 1920x1200p and about 5% of my keepers get cropped to that size and are therefore unintentional pixel peeping.
Here's some of them.

Uncropped originals can be provided on request.

I will never upgrade to a higher res screen! :-)

That's a lovely group, well-done!

These are old ones i found out using the Panasonic 100-300. The birds were fairly small in the frame so i cropped them just for this thread.

I think if you get plenty of light the lens gives decent results wide open at 300mm

Its no F4 pro when it comes to cropping but i love this lens because its such a great size and weight.

Really is excellent for in camera 4k crop. Canon 100-400-ii helps as well.

I purchased my Gx80 to do this : video in 4k then take captures from video as it was easier than photographing for me. I just didn't get round to it as lockdown approached then I sold my Gx80 during lockdown.

I had a manual focus legacy glass 200mm to place on my Gx80 I can't quite recall which one as I didnt get chance to use it except once to videos farm animals.

Photography after all is interplay of light alongside perspective.

Nice, and a good job on what I assume was manual focus!
Thanks, actually S-AF initially, then MF when video's running, if needed.
