as many of you know, i spent several months after my mom passed away in february sorting through, scanning, editing and cataloging over 15,000 family photos going back over 100 years. it was quite a project. i ended up with over 1500 final images, the best of the best . in addition, i used a program called microsoft photostory to create slide shows set to music. i made over 22 different slide shows, all different themes (pretty woman, studs, halloween, fishing, drive my car, sports, graduations, weddings, birthdays, christmas, much more). i then put the slide shows on a dvd so that the computer challenged in my family could enjoy them as well. i combined that dvd with a data cd of the 1500 images and packaged it all up in a dvd case, with a photo montage for the cover - and then handed each member of the family (30 of them!) a copy at thanksgiving this year.

the response was overwhelming. there wasn't a dry eye in the house after i played the first slideshow, all about our mom. the music for this story featured the four tops' "climb every mountain" and josh groban's "to where you are" which are incredibly moving. after everyone composed themselves, things picked up a bit as the more fun shows came on. needless to say, it gave me a very good feeling that the hard work (over 400 hours on this project) paid off. i've been getting phone calls from everyone in the family ("where did you get that picture!!??* heh heh...

oh - i also have all the photos online at smugmug - usually they are in private galleries but for the time being, while my galleries are being featured on the smugmug homepage, they are open to view if you are curious: http://williams.smugmug.com/Family/1697

Sounds like a fantastic project and it seems that everyone was over-whelmed by your work. Fantastic! :) I have been thinking about doing a project along these lines and this has given me more motivation to complete it. :)

Thanks for sharing! :)

thanks steve - you are so right. my mom was the sort of person who always had a camera with her - i remember the instamatics as a young lad:

which she used to take this photo of me ;>

she also had photos into photo albums within minutes of taking them it seemed! there were hundreds of albums around the house - and boxes and boxes of photos. i know she's smiling down on us saying thanks for doing this ;>

Never heard of that Microsoft program...sounds interesting.
I've been playing around with PicturesToExe...a really nice program.

There's a website that features presentations made with this program here: http://www.beechbrook.com . Go to the PTE presentations and check out the program on England, The West Country. The maker of that program, Bill Hines, is the owner of the beechbrook site. If you want to see another nice program check out Olga Boritch, Photographer, on page 3. These are pretty big files. DSL or any fast connection would help!

Bill will giving a presentation on PicturesToExe at my home on December 11. If anyone lives in the Asheville, NC are and wants to attend, email me at [email protected].

Andy,

This sounds like a wonderfully fulfilling project. I'm quite sure that your mother would be both touched and very proud of her son. You've given your family members a real treasure that they'll keep forever. I can't think of a better gift than memories...

Andy, I've seen your Smugmug.com version. What a monumental task, a real task of love. Your family is fortunate to have such a devoted and people-oriented member such as yourself. Keep up the hard work. It's all about people, isn't it? Your mom would be so proud.

Take care.

Hey Any,

What a great story and effort! We do similar things in our family, but never one of that magnitude! I can imagine how emotional that must have been. Says a lot about you.

Two things: I want that Vette... actually, my dream car is a 63 convertible. That one must have been about a 65 or 66?

And, lookin' good Andy! ;-)

It's a great thing you did for your family Andy. Nothing can compare to that. I always want to do that for my family but never get time. But I will some day. Thanks for sharing.

Antoine
as many of you know, i spent several months after my mom passed
away in february sorting through, scanning, editing and cataloging
over 15,000 family photos going back over 100 years. it was quite
a project. i ended up with over 1500 final images, the best of
the best
. in addition, i used a program called microsoft
photostory to create slide shows set to music. i made over 22
different slide shows, all different themes (pretty woman, studs,
halloween, fishing, drive my car, sports, graduations, weddings,
birthdays, christmas, much more). i then put the slide shows on a
dvd so that the computer challenged in my family could enjoy them
as well. i combined that dvd with a data cd of the 1500 images and
packaged it all up in a dvd case, with a photo montage for the
cover - and then handed each member of the family (30 of them!) a
copy at thanksgiving this year.

the response was overwhelming. there wasn't a dry eye in the house
after i played the first slideshow, all about our mom. the music
for this story featured the four tops' "climb every mountain" and
josh groban's "to where you are" which are incredibly moving.
after everyone composed themselves, things picked up a bit as the
more fun shows came on. needless to say, it gave me a very good
feeling that the hard work (over 400 hours on this project) paid
off. i've been getting phone calls from everyone in the family
("where did you get that picture!!??* heh heh...

oh - i also have all the photos online at smugmug - usually they
are in private galleries but for the time being, while my galleries
are being featured on the smugmug homepage, they are open to view

torward you Andy.

It is truly a monumental task you have accomplished. A task few to none are willing to tackle. When starting out on this project, did you have any idea that it would end up taking more than 400 hours of your time. Would you have done it anyway if you have known !?.

I believe each and everyone of the 30 family members owe you a nice present under the Christmas tree this year.

Thanks for sharing the warm story and the family's galleries.

Kenny .
