Is $2500 enough to start our wedding business?

Well, we told our instructor that we were not interested in his Pentax camera due to what people said on this forum, and he told us fine but he is done with teaching us. Hopefully he cools off in a few weeks. He insisted that there was no better camera for our needs.
Doesn't sound very professional to me.

I have to wonder why he's having such a snit when he could just put his old gear up for sale on eBay. My guess is he's trying to get an above-market price from you.

The fact that he won't instruct you after you said you won't buy his old cameras tells you all you need to know about his motivations and objectivity / honesty. He showed his true colors. Now you show your continued progress toward sensible actions by ...

I think you might well be better off finding a new source of instruction. IMO if you still want to shoot weddings professionally, find a seasoned wedding pro who will take you on as a second shooter or even as an assistant.
He insisted that there was no better camera for our needs.
By any reasonably-objective standard, that is ridiculously false. The fact that he is moving to a Sony MILC system while trying to sell you his old Pentax SLR system is strong evidence that even he doesn't believe it. Even if for whatever reason a DSLR is better than, or even just subjectively preferable to, a good MILC for a particular user, there is no reasonable argument that any Pentax DSLR is even on the whole as good as, much less better than, e.g. a Nikon D850.

He sounds (surprisingly?) thin skinned with questionable reasons for his attitude and thinking/ethics behind 'pushing' his old gear.

Whatever you decide to do, best of luck with your continued learning curve and business aspirations & development:)

Oooh, big red flag there. VERY unprofessional, and not entirely honest in what he's saying.

Well, thats a lie. Now there is literally millions of great used cameras and gear out there that will cover a wedding. It's a wedding. Not sports. Not commercial advertising. A wedding. No one is moving very fast. Flash can always light up darker places. A couple of used 5Ds, a 24-70 2.8 and an on camera flash will get you through a wedding. Longer lenses can be used. Many top shooters never use them. Some do. Some never use flash. Some do.

I shoot Fuji. A couple of X-T2s or 3s will work. I know a few that only use the 23mm and 56mm for their weddings. Or the newer 18mm. All of that can certainly be had for under $2500. Or a 16-55 and 50-140. I use those two lenses pretty much all the time to cover my corporate events and headsets. And I work a lot.

There is so much used gear out there. Pentax is not a bad brand but certainly not the first choice of many pros. Mostly Sony, Canon and Nikon. I just prefer the lighter weight of the Fuji system. And price! lol!!

Have they solved the worm problem with these camera that you see when you blow images up by 500%?

lol. I dunno why you persist with this trolling but sometimes it is so obvious that you perhaps miss the point of your long term charade in this user id, and your previous troll id

Nobody looks at 500% at photos for any real objective reason, and you are very, very behind on the worm problem

Please can your posts be real as they pollute otherwise sensible discussions

You keep talking about worms, but you haven't shown evidence of any such issue. Come to think of it, you haven't shown evidence of being a photographer.

Also, nobody looks at images at 500%.

Don't forget he has the lovely Red Dot Leica SL3 with his vintage manual focus glass to bamboozle his prospects with..... so perhaps he uses the 500% 'argument' snake oil to lubricate the sales pitch?

To be fair, Fuji did have a worms issue that was prevalent when importing to LR. The issue has mostly gone away now by the way LR handles the import and by the Enhance details option

Why would you blow up an image 500%? I have never seen any worms in any of my images. Some people have terrible editing skills.

Shabang wasn't talking about Fuji, so there's no need to be fair.

It wasn't a Fuji problem. It was a LR problem. Even still, I have yet to see any worms. But then again, I don't over sharpen my images. And with Capture One, it is not a problem.

If it were a Fuji problem, you'd see it in Capture One as well. But you don't.

The internet is funny old thing. I say tom-ah-toes you say tom-a-toes

Yes, it was mainly an LR issue and YES, it did produce worms (and watercolour smearing), and thats without sharpening - particularly in foliage - and more pronounced when sharpening applied. I can confirm this as it was ever present for quite some time in LR. Either way, it was a present in Fuji images when put through LR

But lets not deviate from pointing out the ongoing ridiculous statements from our resident wedding business troll ;-)

I haven't followed this forum in quite a while, but I'm so pleased to see Shabang posting! The entertainment value of his "expertise" is terrific!! (Just don't anyone actually take it for being of any actual value)

I have not thus far posted this same comment so as not to introduce the element of irreverence.

But since you have broken the ice, I AGREE!

Shabang, Aren't you the guy who drinks on the job and barges into weddings to practice? I think you said your wife smokes every 1/2 hour in the middle of jobs?

If your basic premise is correct, then I think the smoking must be to get some fine particulates onto the sensor and/or into the lens, to provide even more character than those vintage Spiratone lenses already provide. I heard that the light-scattering effects of PM-2.5 are basically the same as the famed Leica 'pixie dust'.

Maybe smoke with a cig between the fingers while taking pictures. Most brides love to have their dress all stunk up. While her husband has a quick nip from a flask in his jacket.
