Are there any decent Olympus Youtubers?

I enjoy watching M43 themed Youtube videos while I'm on the train or doing work round the house, and I've noticed that when you search for M43, and particularly Olympus, which is what most of my gear is, the results are dominated by a few creators, all of whom happen to be Olympus brand ambassadors (you know who they are) and are annoying to me for various reasons.

Do you have any recommendations for smaller channels who are worth paying attention to? I was a regular follower of David Thorpe but unfortunately he passed away recently.

If you want a non-annoying YouTuber I’m pretty sure none exist :)

I actually watched a few off and on a year or two ago but then found the material to be helpful at first but quickly I got tired of them because they were all reviewing the same gear and saying the same things, with pretty rare exception. I started watching some of the more general composition and exposure channels but then got tired of those, too. I’m pretty much just taking pictures now and happy to not watch YouTube.

What kind of material are you looking for? Gear reviews? Camera comparisons? I’ve always had better luck searching for what I’m interested in (a specific camera, a lens, or a technique) and then checking out what comes up. I’ve had little success sticking with one channel because you realize the redundancy and bias with most of them.

Gear discussion with an emphasis on design and what you can do with it rather than technical reviews, along the lines of Ted Forbes (he pretty much only looks at FF and MF) or Matthias Burling (Retired from YT but I love his work!).

It doesn't help that there seems to be no official abbreviation for Micro Four Thirds, but a search like this on YouTube might find some more content:

olympus (micro four thirds,mft,m43,m4/3)

He doesn't generate a lot of Youtube content, and I doubt what he does produce is exactly what you are seeking, but Matt Horspool (Etchd) is worth a look if you want to see someone using Olympus/OM equipment for projects outside the modern norm.

Those are good suggestions.

Matti Sulanto is pretty decent in my opinion. He’s not overly technical and I generally agree with his take on the shooting experience he shares with cameras. He does a good job of trying to convey the camera design with what you can and can’t do with it. But like anything it’s just my opinion. He was a m43 ambassador at some point, I believe.

surely you've not managed to make it too far without stumbling over robin wong?? lol. legend in the Olympus youtuber space. he has not been an olympus ambassador for many years. i do not love all his recent stuff but his back catalog is full of tips and tricks for Olympus cameras.

you're going to run into the problem the youtubers face: micro four thirds is so small a user base, and the pace of new gear review so slow, that it's near to impossible to keep a weekly video feed that's actually interesting. i happen to like matti sulanto for being earnest and microfournerds for using MFT in her business and personal life, but the reality is they all need to make non MFT content sometimes IF they hope to get the views to grow their channel.

matti was a lumix ambassador, no such thing as m43 ambassador. at the time he started videos, it was not always common for ambassadors to disclose their affiliation, but he always tried to make that clear in my recollection. he also had a very long professional career in finland shooting every brand over time from film into digital. i learned a lot about exposure management (highlights/shadows) from him. now he is pretty clearly retired but cannot shake the photography bug or buying gear.

Well, a lot is personal taste. I like Matti's style, for content I don't find it very informative. The opposite (again, for me) is Robin: don't really like his style, but now and then he has some very useful info.

Personally I find Rob the best: although he uses Olympus/OMS which maybe less interesting for Panasonic users, he is good at explaining how to get certain things done without being a brand fan.

Thomas is very good at explaining tech, but he always gives me the feeling he is fishing for getting asked to be an OMS ambassador.

Yeah I meant Olympus (not m43) but yeah it’s Panasonic anyway 😂😂

Honestly since David Thorpe's sad departure I have not found a very good m4/3 youtuber that makes me want put notifications on yet - and trust me I watch a lot of youtube.

Some good ones that review also m4/3 cameras but no-one that focuses on this mount left that isn't either annoying, bitter, clearly skewed (trying to get somewhere?) or just not good yet in terms of video/content. Hours and hours of chatting don't cut it for me. I want really good product shots, details of the workings, images posted. Not really interested into your walking around or personal opinions...?

I do enjoy chris&jordan when they put out a product review - it's always good entertainment! - but since they moved to petapixel and started to putting ads everywhere and doing podcasts to fill up the library (as everybody does nowadays, it's easier to just chat and record right?) I don't receive their notifications anymore.

Gordon Laing remains one of the good ones in my view. If you like birds and nature Espen Haland is a good reviewer/explaier even if his videos tend to be a bit long, slow paced but much better than others!

I too recommend Espen Helland and Mike Lane. Neither are annoying LOL

I've watched Emilie Talpin recently and she is down to earth and likable.

My issue is they ALL have the eye-wateringly expensive 150-400 and have endless cameras and lenses thrown at them by the manufacurers and are always on trips to honey pot locations like Iceland & Japan (often manufacturer sponsored events) so it is easy to feel excluded.

Chris Baitson and Henry Turner are a couple of more grounded youtubers but I don't always find them that engaging. Emily (Micro Four Nerds) is more entertaining and has some useful stuff once you see past her "blooming amazin" for every single camera she handles.
