Official Train, Plane, and Tram thread #18

A cool, clear, beautiful day on the Atlantic and a fun, well-paced air show featuring the Italian Frecce Tricolori flying team, US Air Force, US Navy, and WW2 warbirds. All in all, a great day with my new-ish OM System OM-1 Mark II and Leica Panasonic 100-400mm zoom.

It's been a while since anyone's posted in this thread, so I thought I'd resurrect it :)

The Severn Valley Railway had another photography evening earlier this month, and I was lucky enough to get a ticket. I was also really lucky with the weather, as my drive up was horrible, it took three hours of driving in torrential rain to get there, but miraculously it stayed dry whilst I was there!

More BR blue preserved diesels; including five of my favourite Class 50's!

In case you were wondering why diesel locos are producing steam; although modern UK rolling stock uses ETH (electric train heat), older carriages built during the steam era were heated directly by steam, so the early passenger locomotives were fitted with boilers to provide "steam heat" :)

All taken using a Sony A7R4 and the Sony 24-105 f4 G/OSS lens.

If you'd like to read more about most of the locomotives, you can find information here:

https://www.svrwiki.com/Diesel_Locomotives

The Class 50's are operated by the Fifty-Fund-Alliance and more information about that can be found here:

https://www.fiftyfund-alliance.co.uk/locos

Enjoy!

Thanks Lan for trying to breathe some new life into the thread. Here's my contribution

Very high ISO photography, all captures from 4k video using Adobe Premiere Pro with Neat denoise plugin, and DxO Photolab 6 for final processing.

Excellent shots Larry! It's remarkable how much wider our shooting envelope is these days, with better cameras, faster lenses and far better noise reduction software :)

Agree... I've been trying for more than 3 years to do low-light photography of trains.... and only now are mainstream consumer gear and post-processing options up to the task. Amazingly this is off 4k video... I could have done this from RAW files a couple years ago.

A few train snaps from a recent round the island journey using trains, planes and car. Overall I was impressed by TR passenger rail service. The bento boxes offered at stations and onboard were delicious and inexpensive.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Not sure whether I've lost track of the current thread, or whether this is it?!

Anyway, an increasingly popular trend in England at the moment is to light up steam trains with Christmas lights during the winter months. As it always seems to be dark at this time of year, at least it gives me something to point my camera at during those long cold evenings!

Here's my 2024 batch:

1. Waiting for the off!
1. Waiting for the off!

2. Train waterfall; long exposure of the train coming towards me

3. Steam sign, with reflections of Christmas lights. Seemed an accurate reflection to me!

4. Waiting for the off, now facing the right way, with a shunter (assumed BR Class 08)
4. Waiting for the off, now facing the right way, with a shunter (assumed BR Class 08)

5. More light trails, with reflected platform lights
5. More light trails, with reflected platform lights

All taken with the Sony A7R4 and Sony 24-105 f4 G/OSS, and processed using DxO PhotoLab and in some cases EasyHDR (#1 and #4).

I hope you all have a wonderful Christmas, and that Santa brings you plenty of shiny things to play with in the year ahead :)

Spent a few hours on Christmas Eve Eve at the Strasburg Railroad. Caught some images of the their Santa train at sunset.

Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday!

Thanks

Grabbed this shot quickly while walking and recalled this thread. The tram is our regional Sky Train system. Might be best to enlarge to original size.

Trains... a great subject. Even Richard Butler thinks so! Haven't posted here in a long time.

An unusual post for me, as I'm usually focussed on trains, not planes.

Not really an intergalactic flight, but I loved the juxtaposition of the aircraft flying in front of the full moon!

Are there still watercress beds in Havant ?

I spent my childhood there, but my impression was that the watercress had gone ?
Unfortunately, I think they're all gone. I certainly can't see any when I look at satellite view on Google.

There are still some near The Watercress Line though!
