Need help using a Sigma fpL & and Sigma DG DN C lenses with a Hoya R72 IR filter....

I've shot IR photos before using the Hoya R72 IR filter on my previously owned Leica Ms and several different Fuji models. But so far, all I can seem to get with my fpL is a totally black image. Once the R72 filter is on the lens, the LCD is totally black so I set the lens to MF, focus the lens, then mount the R72 filter, and take the shot. Based on my old leica & Fuji settings, I also set the ISO to 3200 with shutter speed and WB set to auto. I've tried shooting from f2.8 to f11, but the results are the same. Today, I tried again with my 24mm f3.5 DG DN C lens and the results were the same.

The IR Photo below was shot with a Fujifilm X-H1 set to B&W+R Film Simulation and ISO3200, a Tokina ATX-m 56mm f1.4 lens set to f8, and a Hoya R72 IR Filter.

Maybe your fp L has a more affective IR-blocking filter than that Fuji does, or did you have the IR-blocking filter removed from your fp L?

Using Auto on the shutter speed could be the problem.

On my Foveon DSLRs, I found Manual everything including the lens to be best.

I went:

Filter off, compose and focus and set the aperture/shutter exposure to about +2 on the meter.

Filter on, click!

Hope that works on an fp.

bs1946,

I did a quick test today with a Sony A7 ii camera with the following results.

Normal photo. Camera in Manual mode, ISO 800, Shutter Speed 1/30 sec @f7.1.

IR Photo: Camera Manual mode, ISO 800, Shutter Speed 20 secs @7.1.

So in a situation where normally at ISO 800 the shutter speed would be !/30 sec. @ f7.1 with the R72 filter attached a 20 sec. Shutter speed is required to get a suitable exposure & at that the image was only barely visible on the LCD or EVF. If the fp / fp L has "Preview in M Mode" in the shooting blue Menu set it to OFF and you should be able to see the image on the LCD or EVF. See two pics here, sorry the IR one is OOF (my fault, I should not have used AF although it should have AFd, My old SD14 that I use for IR Autofocuses well so I think the fp/fpL should too).

Straight image.

R72 filter attached.
