So I recently updated my gear list. Frequently, I sell gear to justify new gear. There are a couple lenses I wish I never sold and would use them today if I still owned them.

- Nikon 200-500mm (sold to help with a 300mm f2.8 purchase)

- Sigma 35mm f1.4 (sold because I was not using the lens much)

These are both great lenses and wish I had them today.

Do you have any gear you sold that you regret selling?

Well, all of the stuff I've sold. I sold my X-Pan for the price of an SLR, now I could sell it for the price of a small car. Photographically I don't regret it though, stitching has supplanted it.

I do regret my original Fuji 16-50, the 18/2 and 60/2.5, especially the latter one which I've replaced with a Zeiss 50mm macro.

I don't regret my Nikon D800 and lenses, though I saw some going for a song recently and was tempted, irrationally.

Getting rid of my tilt shift lenses was a huge release, they took too long, too much work, too heavy.

I'd like to have held on to most of my gear, but most would never be used again

The one thing that I would have used and shouldnt have sold is my Fuji x100F.

If I had held onto my Panasonic fz7, i could have go en it to my 6 year old. I found a powershot 500sx is for him which is great, but would have gotten a kick of him using my old camera.

My Fuji X-E2s and 18-55 was a really nice kit. But my D7100 is better. And I really only need one good dedicated camera outfit.

I regret selling my Nikon 200mm f2 AI, and Contax Zeiss 85mm f1.4 T*.

The Nikon was the sharpest lens at f2 that I have ever had, but I wanted a lighter lens with AF. It had the smoothest out-of-focus rendering as well. I regularly keep my eye on used one's to possibly replace it.

I sold the Zeiss because it was as soft as any other 85mm lens wide open, although it became my sharpest lens by f2.8. All these years later I realize that the out-of-focus rendering wide open was truly exceptional.

I don't regret selling my Canon FD 35mm f2 SSC (Concave) for photographic reasons, however I would love to sell it now for several thousand dollars, when it was only ever worth a couple of hundred!

The few things I sold and bought again later always cost me less than what I gained by selling them the first time - so nope, no regrets.

My first real camera, a Nikon D5200. I regret selling it mostly as a sentimental thing, as it was my first real camera (all cameras prior to that were point and shoot digital and film).

I was moving to FF and sold the camera with kit lens and some accessories for about $500 (paid about $750 I thin for it when it was new) but it was my first real camera, so it had some value in being that. The rest of my gear, I don't miss as much.

(At the time, I was also only about 1 year into my photography journey and hadn't learned that a new camera won't make you a better photography, or about things like crop factors even, so I had a lot of learning to do but had I known what i know now, I would have probably just kept it -- still gone to FF, but kept an APSC camera around for backup and whatever, as $500 seemed like a good deal at the time, and maybe it was, as it went to my then $2200 FF DSLR but in hindsight maybe I should not have sold it...) Oh, well, that's peanuts in comparison to what I've "lost" over the years since then in swapping out FF gear (nothing too horrible, but probably ab out $3k or $4k combined so far lost in buying/selling gear, but that spans over about 8 years and probably a dozen pieces of gear).

... except some of the gear I should not have bought, but steering the car while looking in the rear view mirror is not going to get you to your destination.

Way too dangerous to drive and take photos at the same time.

No, I have no regrets over the gear I've sold, although I've not sold that much, usually keeping older gear on the shelf.

My main regret is not being able to justify buying new gear since what I have does the job. Would love to have a Canon R5 Mk II, but then I would need new glass to take advantage of it and that kit for a retiree is prohibitively expensive. :-(

Cool. What were the purchases?
The two that I recall were a Sony A99 and a Minolta 28-135 lens for it. I sold them when I wasn't using them much, then bought replacements much later at lower prices. Of course I've sold many other things that I didn't replace ... and no regrets there either.

One regret is that I've never sold stuff as promptly as I should have. No real harm done, but I could have been a few hundred pounds better off by selling as soon as the stuff was superceded.

Did you eventually sell or give the gear away?

My problem was I was too fast selling on a few items I wish I kept.

Cameras and lenses I've sold :

- Nikkor AI 300mm f/4.5 : it was super cheap, I wasn't using it much but some of my favourite landscape shots were done with that lens. Now I have a sigma 100-400 for this kind of thing (which also serves as a long telephoto with autofocus). I would say that I regrat selling it, but it's mostly for the collector aspect of things as my current gear is more practical to use.

- Tokina 80-200mm f/2.8 : I definitely regret selling that one. It was terribly expensive to buy (I think I got it for about €200), but the pretty poor performance in the sun made me sell it. And now all I look for is a fast telephoto, sometimes I just wish I kept that one as it was still a pretty sharp lens as long as the sun didn't enter through the front lens.

- Viltrox 85mm f/1.8 : was a nice lens, but I don't regret selling it

- Viltrox 56mm f/1.4 : same as the Viltrox 85

- Fuji XF 23mm f/2 : I thought I would regret it more as it was really a lens I used to death in the time I had it... but since I sold it I haven't missed it once.

- Fuji XC 35mm f/2 : I replaced it with the XF version, so no.

- Fuji X100 (original) : it was a wonderful camera, but had some issues in terms of handling (especially AF). I regretted selling it initially, but I got an X100S which fixes pretty much every problem I had with the original X100, so no I do not regret selling that camera

- Fujifilm X-H1 : I sold this little guy to switch to Nikon Z and get a Nikon Z6. I do not regret buying the Z6 at all, this is a wonderful camera that will satisfy me for years, however there are some aspects of the X-H1 I do miss (like the perfect duo it made with my X-T2, the whisper quiet shutter and the really nice back screen articulation or the possibility to seamlessly switch between retro dials and command dials for all exposure matters). If I was still shooting Fujifilm as my main camera system, I would definitely want to buy another.

- Fujifilm X-T2 : I had it before the X-H1 and kept it longer as well, only listing it up for sale last week. Maybe it's too early to say if I will regret it or not, but I have the feeling that though I absolutely love that camera, I won't miss it nearly as much as I thought I would. It stayed on a shelf for the better part of the last year as my Z6 is a more anjoyable camera to use when I need an efficient body. I recently got an X-Pro2 for when I just want to have fun, and didn't think about the X-T2 since. So maybe I'll regret that, maybe I won't...

- Canon M50 : oh I DEFINITELY don't regret selling that one.

Right now I guess I'm pretty fortunate to not have any regret of gear I sold without any possibility of buying it again. My biggest regret was the X100, but then the X100S and X-Pro2 came to fill the hole.

Sold via fforbes.com (UK). I lost a bit of value as the gear got more outdated on a shelf in my house. I need to bundle up some stuff and send it in. Any UK people ffordes sell on commission and have done well for me, when I finally got round to it!

My Fuji X100 V. I cannot get the new model unless I pay 30% above MSRP. My bad I suppose.

2000 era P&S era cameras that are now so popular with the younger tiktok generation.

Garage sale liquidated a dozen of those and wish I didn't. Could have made more money 🤑

I've bought and sold a lot of gear over the years, and I've sold and re-bought a few things, which I guess indicates seller's regret.

These were a Sony NEX-5R, a Nikon 1 V2 and a Nikon 1 J5. In all three cases I paid out a little more than the sale price, but that's just the cost of doing business.

My one actual regret is my Olympus Stylus 1, which I sold because of an irritating fault, though it was still usable. They are now a rare and steadily appreciating item on the used market, which I can no longer afford.
