Help to find away to process the 8k video from z9

This is more a question to ask on the davinci resolve forums than here.

You don't have to use n-log. But you do have to use the nraw format.

Like it or not, 8K raw editing is no easy lift. You're going to need to use a proper NLE program for it. Even for simple edits.

DaVinci Resolve is probably the best option.

Dear all

I’m trying to video few birds around with z9

i noticed that to get 8k I have to use raw nlog, which is quite confusing …The premier pro can’t read it and I had to use davince.
You don't have to use RAW N-Log to get 8K: 7680 x 4320. I shoot 8K occasionally, but with H.265 10-bit, usually N-Log but have also used SDR. I am sure RAW is great, but frequently I shoot music for 45, 60 minutes uninterrupted. RAW video files are just way too big to deal with.
i only need to add music and up load to YouTube . Is it a quick way???
Thank you all
I use DaVinci Resolve and have no experience with Premier.

oh, in SDR, do you need to edit it? (grading I belive it is called). That can help :)

my bad, i just see that SDR also kind of raw. The [SDR] tone mode is optimal for SDR workflows, allowing for shooting at low sensitivities below ISO 800 and offering superior noise performance in dark areas compared to the [N-Log] mode. The [N-Log] tone mode is appropriate for Log and HDR workflows. The minimum ISO sensitivity that can be set is 800. (Google)

When you shoot 45-60mins, what option of video you go for?

As I said, 8K H.265 10-big N-Log. For example, this is a symphony performance I captured two weeks ago, with three Z cameras. Only the main camera that covers the entire orchestra was set to 8K on a Z9. My MacBook struggles dealing with three 8K video sources.

I used SDR when I first got my Z9 in 2022. I have "graduated" to N-Log now. Prior to that, my Z6/Z6ii didn't provide the more sophisticated options, but it looks like all EXPEED 7-based Z bodies have Log now.

You only need to use RAW if you want to use full 8K. The much easier alternative is to use H.265 (selected from within the "Video File Type" sub-menu in the "Video Recording Menu" on the Z9). This allows selection of Frame size and Rate upto 7680x4320 and at upto 30p rate. No raw processing involved. Is that not good enough??

Personally if it's only for youtube I would have thought 4K video would be more than adequate.

Very nice capture. My congratulations to the youth orchestra and conductor on a job well done.

Thank you Karl. I am sure the orchestra and conductor appreciate that.

7680x4320 is considered 8k. That is available in non raw codecs on Z8/9. However, it is not a good choice for bird video nor for YouTube. Try 4k/60 which is oversampled and gorgeous quality (just as good as 8k on yt) and can be slowed to half speed or 4k/120 which can be slowed to quarter speed but is sub sampled and not quite so high quality but still great.
Oh that is great advice

I also see z9 has 8k 60fps but the only way is raw format 😭

Great capture, the youth orchestra sounded really good, too. Did you use external mics or are we hearing the camera's internal hardware?

The music reminds me of an old Warner Brothers cartoon :-)

7680 x 4320 is officially 8K UHD.

RAW video is less compressed than HEVC so it is actually easier for an editor to deal with, assuming it recognizes N RAW.

Youtube videos that are uploaded in 8K look better at any viewing resolution than videos uploaded in 4K, and YouTube makes an 8K stream.

My computer can play back an 8K video, though it sounds like a jet taking off while doing so :-D However my monitor is 4k and my internet stream has a narrow urethra and can barely manage 1080p. YouTube defaults to 720p here. Most people don't have an 8K monitor, or even the capability to stream in 4K reliably. I suspect that our internet connections can't make an 8k downsampled to 720p stream look any better than a 4k downsampled to 720p stream.

Yes, but that is 8.3k and you need DaVinci Resolve Studio or Edius X Pro to edit those files. You also need huge fast cards and vast file storage as those files are HUGE. You tube downsizes it to 7680x4320 and of course you need an 8k screen and a fast connection to view it on. You Tube's compression largely cancels out the advantages of it. The only time I use it is when I need 60fps in 8k. The only time I need 8k is when I need to zoom in post.

The very best 8k You Tube content from NRaw I have seen is this (and it is good especially from 3.05ish, but be sure to select 8k viewing):

Because the first thing that youtube will do with that file is downsize it.

Are you running on a Windows or Mac machine?

You're going to need a fast computer, 32GB RAM, and hefty video card, on top of that- you'll certainly need a SSD or possibly even a RAID.

I think if you need to edit and render in 8k you will need to purchase DaVinci's Resolve Studio, not the free version.

If you're running Windows 10 or 11 you can try using Vegas Pro- I think it allows for a 14 day free trial...

Good luck! :)
