Problem - Particularly for People in Oz - 3G Closure

Hi there.
I believe Iam having the same issue as you (but i have a nokia 8.3) and just want to confirm that it was the ALDI plan that was the issue and not the phone itself correct?
If you have this https://www.gsmarena.com/nokia_8_3_5g-10142.php

than you should be in clear. It is likely the Aldi SIM that has no 4G or the 4G is locked (as they likely don't have 5G connectivity considering the bulk buying from Telstra).

Try *#*#4636#*#* and your phone should "unlock' the SIM - it will say 'carrier check off', making the phone itself ignore 'lock' on the SIM. Let us know.

Hi, ashnot.

My answer to your question is Yes, that phone should work quite fine with a different SIM.

Now, do what @ZorSy said: check out the GSMarena link for that phone and see for yourself that it is indeed LTE capable.

After that, go back to this early post in the thread:

and see what ZorSy's (and my) advice gives you when you try

*#*#4636#*#*

Just go to the phone app, type it in as if making a call. At the last * it will take you to the phone settings screen Have a look at what is locked On and Off with the Aldi sim.

You'll need another SIM to unlock the "locked" features by Aldi. (Ultimately blame Telstra for this, but that's partly why Aldi could sell such cheap services.)

Your alternative SIM choices:

Telstra or Optus very expensive monthly plans enable all features. (Not suitable fr me as I have home NBN and do not need their additional large monthly data.)

Optus sub-carrier like Amaysim - enables all the VoLTE features you want and offers 5G on some plans.

Telstra sub-carrier like Woolworths Everyday Mobile - ditto for features but 5G only in dearer plans. Alternatively, check out if the yearly plans suit you. WEM uses Telstra's MVNO network, so no coverage across the Nullabor/much of Central Australia etc

Boost Mobile - Telstra FULL network, ALL 5G plans; enables ALL features on your phone. Cheapest monthly is a bit uneconomical for data (IMO).

I settled for Boost 365-day $300/265GB, as I do get to remote places sometimes.

Good luck and let us know.

There is also Kogan mobile. They are Vodafone service BUT on yearly prepaid you won't have 5G (only Large monthly qualify) The good thing is 365 days Flexi plan - you have 140/200/300/500 GB but not a monthly 'allowance'. So the smallest (140GB=$150 ($12.50 per month!) will go a long way if combined with home WiFi. Mind you, Vodafone does not have as good coverage in regional as Telstra has (if that matters). WE have had 4 phones with them for years, buy recharge voucher when they email special (so my last was $120..) as 59 days valid.... Shop around....

I managed to grab this screenshot just now from the phone:

Strange - https://apn-australia.gishan.net/en/apn/aldi/nokia-83-5g

Should work. Try to update phone (over WiFi). Sorry I thought that code is equivalent to Xiaomi *#*#86583#*#*, which disables carrier check and enables VoLTE (Xiaomi specific) - but it seems it's not. If the update does not fix the problem, change the carrier...You have a phone capable of 5G.

But, you should have 4G/LTE/5G in preferred network type....

Blatant lie "We are only blocking devices that don't meet emergency calling capabilities.

As I stated, it's the scam of Biblical proportions. Feel sorry for the young guy though. He just needed to Google (Mi (even less capable Note) 10 owner here)

ZorSy, I can't say that I fully understand this otherwise interesting info.

I had a look at the preferred network type on the screen and do not see your suggestion listed in mine, as shown in pic below.

Sorry, what I meant is under SIm Cards and mobile network / tap on SIM/ preferred network type ..

all the best

I had a email exchange with AMTA, they are directly responsible for the 'list'. Now with device blocking in place, I hope thousands of people will join the class action (which will inevitably follow).

You can check this, that will tell you if worth fighting for now. Tomorrow is another day and everything may change...

Check about Vodafone, they were 'lenient' as their system uses a different band. Yet, with this latest bodged legislation, they will be forced to ban devices by this AMTA 'list' , what a waste - but conveniently just before the Black Friday. And you guess hot items and the lowest discount - phones... which you must buy at Telco's shop to be sure it actually works (but only on their network. We have been lied and cheated a big way. And the sheep will still follow....

Wow, that a lot more info than I [thought I had already looked into]... I was aware of the Hugh Jeffreys video and the petition he directed us to sign (which I did).

I'll be referring to all this again...
