Welcome to the Weekly Image Thread!

This thread will appear every Saturday (GMT). If the thread is nearing full before the next Saturday, I may start a new thread and carry on until it fills or the next Saturday arrives and it is reasonably full in which case I will start another. Confused, so am I! From time to time the start could be delayed if I am unavailable.

Although this Weekly thread is in the Olympus SLR forum, we openly welcome users of all brands and models.

Please:

  1. Reply to this post and change the TITLE!
  2. Please reply to at least one other contribution, your replies encourage posters!!!
  3. If asked, please share your processing techniques or technical details.
  4. Please show the EXIF if possible. Please identify the lens used regardless of which camera was used to take the image. This helps people form opinions of the lens used with the body to possibly influence future acquisitions.
  5. If special lighting was used to create your image stating what was done may help others.
Thanks for joining and contributing this week.

I like this picture and the idea .. I might like to open up the photographer a very little, maybe only the backpack, to bring her more into the composition ...

We do a lot of walk abouts here and might like a walk through your neighborhood some time ....

WhyNot
Thank you, it was a fleeting moment, not 2 seconds later, she was up and going. I will try your idea and I will post it here ;-)

It's not exactly my neighborhood, since this photo was taken in Nauplio Greece and I live in Athens Greece, but if you come here I would be glad to buuy you a cup of coffee ;-)

I wasn't thinking of that particular neighborhood as these walk abouts seem to just be something we do in whatever neighborhood we find ourselves!! ,, AND I'd lover to join you in a cup of coffee in Greece but those "friendly skies" of 40 years ago that I enjoyed along with the lines at the terminals have become less friendly every year since ..... and unfortunately I have reached an age where I no longer travel further than a local trail ... However we can always enjoy a virtual cup at my virtual table ..... like now ...

I never known owls to be particularly friendly with humans although those I've known seem to tolerate our presence better than smaller birds .... My guess would be that the young lady is connected to some sanctuary for injured birds ... We have some people, who look like her, from a local university bring birds of prey for show at our botanical garden about twice a year ...

We have a collective word for all of them. I thought you also did and that that word was tits. Seems I was wrong - again.

The church does sit in an imposing position on one of the few hills in what is quite a flat landscape. Sadly the tower isn't accessible to the public.
Neither is ours. Or maybe it is open again now, have to check. Doesn't matter because I'm not climbing up those stairs and ladders! The tower of the Holy Cross Church looks more manageable.

Cool. Where is it? Somewhere in Greece I presume.

Wow. Is there some kind of shelter for injured birds nearby?

Here it isn't allowed for private persons to keep native wild animals or birds. If you find an injured animal you have to turn it over to some official caregiver within a few days. But I think the US has different rules.

Sad. Because I've always wanted to have a tame crow, or rather a raven or rook. But I could settle for a jackdaw. ;-)

I’m not one for climbing all those stairs either. Especially given the uneven step heights, narrow staircases and lack of light in some old churches.

these are nice. I have been so disappointed in my fall images this year. Partly the drought has turned everything yellow and brown; talk about shriveled & crispy leaves. I am seeking new perspective - mine just look tired and uninspired this season.

I was out looking for birds at the local nature center when I came across this woman walking around with this owl. She obviously didn't want to be approached, but I did get this shot of her.

As you can see, the owl is on a tether. Any idea what she's doing with it?

Rehabilitating an injured bird?

Training a captured bird?

or something else?
My guess? She's a falconer. Modern falconers work with various raptors, not just the falcons that were used for hunting in the Middle Ages. There's something about the way the owl is looking at her that suggests to me that she raised it from a chick, as falconers do to imprint on the bird, rather than it being a rescue/outreach animal, which rarely get closer than just tolerating a handler.

My grandmother was very insistent that calling anyone "wrong" was rude. She said the proper term was "mistaken".

Also, what is correct in one area can be incorrect in another, depending on local usage. Of course I'm now completely blanking on any kind of example 😾

Speaking of mistaken, I wonder how the woodpecker got the name "red-breasted". I've never been able to see any red, except on its head . . .
