Welcome to the Weekly Image Thread!

This thread will appear every Saturday (GMT). If the thread is nearing full before the next Saturday, I may start a new thread and carry on until it fills or the next Saturday arrives and it is reasonably full in which case I will start another. Confused, so am I! From time to time the start could be delayed if I am unavailable.

Although this Weekly thread is in the Olympus SLR forum, we openly welcome users of all brands and models.

Please:

  1. Reply to this post and change the TITLE!
  2. Please reply to at least one other contribution, your replies encourage posters!!!
  3. If asked, please share your processing techniques or technical details.
  4. Please show the EXIF if possible. Please identify the lens used regardless of which camera was used to take the image. This helps people form opinions of the lens used with the body to possibly influence future acquisitions.
  5. If special lighting was used to create your image stating what was done may help others.
Thanks for joining and contributing this week.

That's a nice selection of birds, WhyNot. The woodpecker is photogenic. The cardinal is a great picture with the background making the bird pop. I'd hope for hawks to deal with that rodent. Rich

Thank you, Rich .....
The woodpecker is photogenic.
He is and he has been quite accommodating the last couple years .. Likes to pose but doesn't have many expressions to show ...

We use to have a Cooper's hawk nest next door that got used every 4 or 5 years ... Back in 2015 They had a family of three that grew up and fledged and had lessons from their mother often in our yard .... well the next winter one came back and spent a week , i thought ..... But then the smaller birds generally totally ignored him/her to my surprise but he did seem to like squirrels

He took about 2 that I saw, reducing our over population ... but on thinking about it I've decided that he was a young Red Tail and I guess the local squirrel population that winter brought him here to spend a few days .. I took about 150 pictures and shared a few I'm sure!! ...

The Hawk presence has dropped significantly since they cut down that tree with the nest and some crows have moved into the neighborhood (they do like to chase lone hawks .. )

Thanks Lynne…..about the plant they received their nourishment…is that the word.?, ….out of the air, so if you put ir inside of the house has to be without air condition…why? Douse the filters on them…..and the humidity control….i learn that and only that from a gardener….
It's just too dry here in SoCal, not enough humidity, even without air conditioning. You have to spray them with water or even soak them briefly. I can never find and maintain the proper frequency to do that and end up either having them dry up or rot from being too wet. So I just gave up. But i thank you for the advice 😸

Lynne

p.s. I think I forgot to mention that you have a knack for taking interesting photos of mundane subjects. The picture of the squash blossoms is lovely!

In the neighborhood.

The Ancient Celts ( circa 1948 ) had a warning about his happening in the days before Samhain. Not sure about this time, yet.

A grumpy old egret not impressed with it's friend's dancing or the sunset. It ought to be sitting on a stool in a corner of the office of Scrooge & Marley...the corner farthest from the grate.

Incoming, dammit ! Watch where you're going.

I was going for the one in flight but the bird recognition chose the one on the right. I think it is better than I am at composition.

The light illuminating the pelicans.

I followed that sunset for quite a while. I don't think I'd like to do that through mirror and prism.

That's all. Rich

All nice Rich. I like the flowers, the third and fourth. That scape in the fourth is a beauty!

The Nikon is on sale here now, $700 off for around $4700 plus taxes. No lens but a card, extra battery and I think an adapter for older Nikor lenses. I see they have a new lens planned that would interest me, a 28 - 135 f/4 power zoom. It could work for hockey. Not sure what I want to do about that as it would be an improvement but a lot of money for something I may not end up using that much.

A good set of local colour. I am much too late here for our area. There is still some about but you have to go looking for it and be prepared to 'stop the car' and get out on the edge of the road and shoot.

The local village used to be good for it when we moved here 36 years ago, but the maples were already very old then and many have died and been cut down in the passing years. The county decided to replace them with trees that don't give nice fall colour! Also, I don't have another 30 years to wait for them to get large!

Taken this afternoon. Processed this evening after hockey.

Thanks, Andrew. I like the Nikon for landscapes, skies and sunsets. I was hoping our current rainstorm would have breaks for photography. Not this storm, it's been socked in high and tight all day.

The Nikkor Z 24-120 S lens which you mentioned does not have IS in the lens or I would have one now. I don't know about that 28-135 range. I like a little wider. I have put a cork in my GAS until I find out about the rumoured OM 1 X with Nextgen Doppler Radar auto focus. You would wear the battery on your waist and you could use the autofocus to cook your lunch. Sorry. I've been making Margaritas. Hic Rich

You really have some fat herons, Andrew. Ours are thin and svelte but have that lean and hungry look. Yours make me think of Julius Caesar saying, 'let me have herons about me that are fat, sleek headed herons and such as sleep a-nights.'

I like the swans ad the huge cranes, too.

I'm likely to have a headache come morning. Rich

Of all your excellent sunset images Rich, I think I like the one without the sun actually in the image best of all. It oozes a 'peaceful easy feeling'.

The balletic pose of the egret is a great capture.

Thank you Andew, I live in an area that doesn't provide many photo ops but has an abundance of trees, I wish I could stop the car when traveling on the freeway and record the amazing colors.

Your blue heron looks very like our grey heron Andrew. It also looks that it hasn't missed a meal in a long time.

I like the image of the mute swans during lift off. They're beautiful birds but their take off looks clumsy.

Been raining for days here but it's incredibly mild. Night time temperature is in the mid 50'sF. Saves on the heating bills which of course pleases this penny pinching Celt.

Very nice .. Fall colors in abundance .. You seem to be further along toward fall than we are a bit north of you ...

Thank you.

Very interesting and entertaining set, Rich ... I like them all ... particularly the sunsets and the pelican in flight against the blue shy .. I appreciate the critics on the right in the two pictures judging those landings.. I do really like the dark sunset .... only wish you had taken a step to the right and lost that post that interferes with the reflection ...

Nice set, Andrew .... reminds me of the local wild life refuge ...
