The new Rollei 35 AF is coming

Big Head Taco.....You Tuber

This video really plays up on the 'sound' of the autofocus and the actual shutter.
And not only that. It shows how poor/fragile is the film winding (and especially rewinding) mechanism. Now compare it with the Pentax 17 camera. Heaven and Earth! Well, if Pentax just had that Rollei lens...

I doubt seriously that any parts are poor or fragile. From what I have heard all along, MINT has gone out of its way to assure itself that quality oozes. The film advance, while small, is most likely very sturdy. Same with the film rewinding. Honestly, I look back at almost all of my film cameras and have always wondered why the rewinder doesn't snap off!... And they haven't ...so most likely all okay here too.

I do worry about the noise of the AF and shutter. Or, is it because the microphone Big Head Taco was using was simply too close and picked up the sounds too intensely. Not sure..... will have to wait another month or so until the release date.

I’m not sure releasing copies to people from YouTube has been a good move Comparing it with the original Rollei, the original has more of a heft about it, plus it’s smaller. But, apart from the original Rollei being built at a time when camera building skills were relatively widespread, it was also more expensive than the new Rollei will be (over £1k in todays money if Wikipedia is right).

Another video. This one says it is a lens test but really it just shows that a lens is sharper at f/8 than f/2.8. But there are a few more details of the camera (no filter threads for example).

( The comments are rather funny - “I’m disappointed you didn’t use a tripod” [for your lens sharpness tests] Response: “Some of you know-it-alls are really entitled”)

I saw this and I saw that comment about not being on a tripod. Funny as that comment was so adamant that unless you use a tripod your review is worthless! ... Anyhow, the 2.8 is equal to the originals and the camera is 'what it is', which,....looks good to me.

It was a bit of the usual YouTube overselling - it’s a lens test (but only of lenses in general, not this one), but hand held with a moving subject in poor light. It’s like the ones comparing two scanners that say “You can’t see this on the video, but there are big differences in the detail of these images”. One comment did mention that they were also a beta tester and that “with proper skill and handling, the results are plenty sharp, handheld or not”

The lack of a filter thread is interesting, I think there was mention a possible push on lens hood. If the lens flares like in this video (which I’ve not seen elsewhere) then it will need one.

Just got an email from Rollei that only a select few countries in Europe will have the opening salvo of cameras in Sept 2025 and shipped in Oct....so that saves me from having to think about buying one here in the states. Let the Europeans go 'at it' and we get plenty of reviews back I suppose. Also, I saw where the second batch is Jan of 2025 and that also states 'Europe' ....

Will be interesting moving forward on the availability in the states .....

Good question.

I do see this on Freestyle Sales site:

Rollei Superpan 200 is a high-speed black and white negative film with a nominal sensitivity of ISO 200/24°. Based on Agfa-Gevaert AVI PAN 200 BW Aerial Film.

Other films I have seen Made by Harman.

Would love a list of all the current real B&W film manufacturers. At one time, I thought there would be more films from China?

Kodak

Ilford The champion of analog preservation.

Foma. Also, papers like Ilford.

Film Ferrania

Adox ???

Bergger ???

New ORWO ???

Others ???

Sadly miss Efke.

I really like the idea of this Rollei but like this guy in the video....I don't want AF. But, this camera is to entice the young and the retro people and they can't shoot all manual so in order for this camera to sell, it needs AF. Perhaps they will come out with one w/o AF but I doubt it.
