No not from FF to m43, I switched from Panasonic Lumix to Olympus as my main use gear.

I hope Panasonic reads these forums.

First m43 camera was a G2. Used that until the G7 came out, then switched to G9.

What attracted me to the format was the size and weight. I carry an interchangeable lens camera on hiking and backpacking trips, and the format was perfect for me. Until i got the G9. I used that camera a lot, but it was just getting to be too much for me on longer trips. Waited patiently for the G9II, hoping it would be smaller, but no. Lots of great features on both the G9 and the G9II, but Panny seems to be heading more and more into video centric stuff. I'm a still photographer.

So after quite a bit of research, I ended up with an OM Systems OM5. Perfect size, perfect weight. bought a used body & traded a lens from MPB. and with the sale completed the setup with an 8-25 and 40-150 f4 Pro. I have other lenses I will sell to offset the cost of the new ones. I still have a couple Panny lenses I will keep around just because I really like them - 50-200 with teleconveters, and a macro lens.

So far really liking the new setup!

And I admit it is a bit familiar. I had an Olympus E510 and some professional lenses. Still have the lenses, thinking about letting them go as well.

I really like the m43 system, and have no intentions of getting out of it. I have a solid setup and will be digging through the forums to glean tips on using the new gear.

In the future, I might consider a top of the line body, either the G9 or the Olympus OM1, but nit anytime soon! My gear account (yes I have a special savings account that money trickles into just for this stuff) REALLY needs to recover!

See ya out there.

You could not pay me to switch to an OM body.

But, glad you are happy.

To each their own.

And, yes, I am strictly a stills photographer.

PS: Lest anyone think I am fully anti-OM, I have twice as many OM/Oly lenses at this point as Panasonic...I just detest the Oly UI and I don't like how the bodies render some things.

You may already be familiar with them, but 2 great resources on YouTube are Rob Trek and Robin Wong. Unfortunately, some of their later stuff is about other camera systems or in Rob's case, promoting buying stuff on Amazon through his site, but much of the information on both is spot on and really hopes to understand this complicated camera

Good luck

Welcome aboard the OM Systems train, the OM-5 is a really nice relatively compact camera that packs a punch, I love mine but it is 2nd to my OM-1, pairs beautifully with that camera though,

did you get black or Silver??

Silver. Just too nice to pass up.

I'm not anti Panasonic at all! I really like the G9 and used it a lot. Also like the lenses, but bought into a couple olympic lenses to use all the features of the OM 5 body. I'll still be using the G91 for certain. Not bashing anyone here!

This will be a polarizing thread because the two brands both have their fans.

i liked the G9II a lot as a stills camera and appreciated that it shared very good ergonomics and batteries with the S5II. Having both for a time was a good match.

I liked the G9II better than the OM1, despite being more aligned with Olympus stuff. I didn't end up meeping either of them because the e-m1 mark ii is such a bargain for 90 percent of the goodie of those cameras.

I also own the OM5 and agree that it is a real pleasant smaller camera. I probably should have gotten an em5.3 and saved a couple hundred bucks but i have been enjoying it.

what I appreciate with either brand is that you have pretty good compatibility with the other brands lenses. I think they are probably better when matched but it is nice to have the option to use the leica 12-60 (for which olympus/omds has no direct replacement) on my olympus/omds bodies. I have the 12-45/4 and have had the 12-100/4 and I think the 12-60/2.8-4 is just a better set of compromises for me.

Imagine how much less compelling the system would be if there wasn't the other half...

I understand your thinking. Panasonic is going to end up losing me as a customer if they don't release a successor to the GX9. I love my G9 but sometimes it's too big and heavy so as nice as the G9 II sounds, the number of times I'd use it instead of my GX9 make it tough to justify the price. I'm on a waiting list for a Fuji X100VI but if a GX9 successor appeared I would consider buying that instead. Having had an EM5.2 in the past, I doubt I would switch to Olympus. I didn't like the menu system nor some of the configuration limitations. If Panasonic never updates the GX9 I'll probably stick with what I have or switch to a different system.

I am a fan of Panasonic and prefer their way of doing things though I currently have two Olympus cameras the OM-1 and E-M5III . Though not as good as Panasonic menus { for me } the new menu used in the OM-1 is quite an improvement on the older E-M5 III . I don't know if the OM5 uses the new menu

The main issue with the GX9 seems to be some folk having problems with the EVF . I have never had an issue with these type of EVF's though I know many do. No one knows what the makers will do but it seems small well featured bodies are in short supply. I would love an updated GX8 my favorite m43 camera by far alas I seriously doubt it will ever happen :-(

Though I have a couple of OM cameras I do agree as well. If it had been around at the same time the G9II would have been my preference over the OM-1 . I just prefer Panasonic's way of doing things

As someone who had used mainly Panasonic m43 gear since 2009 . I found Rob Trek's how to videos on YT very useful when I first got my OM-1

Pretty much the same here, lenses yes, cameras no thanks.

I do actually own an Olympus E-M5 ii, its very bashed up and only gets used for things like fungi in damp woodlands. The battery door catch broke and 30 mins exposure to sunlight burnt spots onto the evf. Only updated the firmware once, never fancied it again with the convoluted method they employ.

I'm waiting for a G90 successor. Given how fragmented the camera market is though, how much it dropped in the last 15 years, and how small Panasonic is on that market... well, I don't have high hopes, really.

They're the biggest mft brand, but size doesnt have much to do with it imo, I'd assume their sales data would be a pretty big factor in any decision, so as much as people say they want these things, they usually find an excuse not to buy, and the camera brand are surely aware of this.

Last time I checked Lumix were 5th after Fuji, oly/OM were in the 'other' piece of the pie chart.

Forum activity might make that seem backwards, but we get very little of the video crowd here.

I also think a lot of the OM/Olympus threads concern issues such as firmware related problems especially downloading and installation. Another popular topic seems to be AF with its many and varied settings.
