OM-1 Mk 1 Firmware 1.7 Released

Some good news, and the main thing I was waiting to see, OM fixed the bug in the original OM-1 (or added the OM1.2 feature if we're feeling generous) that prevented images from being captured while racking zoom in SH2 and Procapture-SH2 drive modes. I was hoping they might also allow the slower frame rates in those drive modes, but no such luck.
It sounds like you have tested the 'racking zoom in SH2' issue. Is that correct?

Slower frame rates would be simple to do, and even more important on the Mk1 camera given the smaller buffer.

Overall I would have hoped for a little more - enough to label it as v2.0 which it clearly isn't.

Yes, downloaded last night expressly to test for that. Tested with both SH2 and Procapture-SH2 and both now work.
Great. That is indeed a useful fix.

Just installed it.. via an SD card, it works without a problem.

And yes.. there is a "delete-menu" button working on my om-1 now ;)
Do you have the link to the 1700 bin file and would you post it here please?

I have tried to use the generic link with the updated file name but just get sent to the 1600 download page.

Thanks,

Brandon
I just modifed 6 into 7 ;)

Thanks.

I t didn’t work for me when I tried that but your link does👍👍

I first updated the OMWorkspace program (Windows 10), then did the OM-1 FW 1.7 update as directed. The camera update itself worked perfectly except I had to re-do the D/M/Y, time of day, and GMT offset. I had saved my C1-4 settings and they were automatically reinstalled correctly except for the shutter speeds, which I had to re-do. IIRC, that happened with the last update as well.

I'll have to do a lot more shooting to decide if the AF has been improved in any ways that matter to me, but at least I'm very pleased with the menu/delete button assignment.

Btw, when recalling saved settings two items were not recalled: "EVF auto-switch" was turned /wrongly/ to "on" and the D/M/Y setting was defaulted.

I maintain a google spreadsheet that documents the alternative method of updating your camera's firmware in case you can't use the official methods (using OM workspace or with the OM cameras, using the OIShare tool on your phone).

In the past, some people who have bricked their camera with a firmware update gone wrong have been able to recover their camera without having to send it in to get repaired. Obviously, it may or may not work, depending on what has gone wrong with the botched update.

I have just collected together information shared on the various forums. It is the user's responsibility on what happens with this update method:

the big question is why we had to wait it so long??
You would prefer a firmware release that has more bugs and less testing?

See my other post. Note, there are 2 16's that need to change to 17's. I.e. they put each firmware in a separate directory.

I updated using OM WS and everything went well. Tested few shots outside and the camera worked, so all seems good.

Tx for the notice. It doesn't look like we should expect any improvement with S-AF in Low light low contrast situations, but I'll take any improvements.

There is some new stuff as well:

The custom modes menu have new options if I'm not mistaken.

Now you can chose if when in a custom mode, the camera should retain or not the changes you make. That can be useful!

I was mistaken then! But it's always good to find "new" stuff.

I haven't paid a lot of attention to the OM1 and OM1 2 differences because I wasn't in the market to replace my OMD EM1 3. However, with the recent sale pricing on the OM1 ($1400) and this firmware update, I'm wondering if it is worth purchasing. Any opinions on whether the firmware makes a difference or sit tight to figure out what OM Systems is doing!

You’re probably right.

At least there are some definite fixes in this one, the delete/menu and SH2 capture while racking zoom (although in typical OMDS fashion that one was not mentioned in the notes).

Those are both minor/useless changes to me personally, but at least they are definite. I think this is the first OM1 firmware update where something was changed so that could be absolutely verified by users. Everything prior has been so vague and nebulous that people could argue over whether there was actually any improvement/difference or not. To me if the existence of a fix/change can be debated, then it cannot be considered important or significant.

It would not surprise me if we see that kind of debate on the alleged “All target mode Autofocus” improvement in this release. If it cures the OM1's predilection for sticks instead of birds, that would be a shock.

If you want human subject detection or take huge bursts of shots, then the OM1 mk ii is for you.

Otherwise the mk i is pretty good value, especially as they seem to be selling it in lots of mixed kit offers.
