Why does Nikon have two types of connectors for remote triggers? I have an old timer for long exposures that I use on my D3100. I noticed it will still work on a Z6III...

but my D700 has a round multipin connector.

is there an adaper for it, or should I just get a new timer on Amazon/Ali or something. Don't want to spend an aweful lot of money for the few occasions I use it for.

I've not got mainly 10-pin bodies, but that's because Nikon's pro-targeted cameras have had the 10-pin connection for quite a while. The Pixel brand of remote releases accepts different chords for various cameras, and may be the best place to start. Otherwise, you may be like me and just ditch the cord and use what's already available in the camera (I.e. self timer, sequence shooting, Bluetooth to smartphone, etc).

thanks, for now i'm financially stuck with the d700, which does not have bluetooth and alike. i just saved up for a second hand 24-85. I like very long exposures (5-15 minutes) and you can't do that on the dSLRs (the Z6's can do 15 minutes I believe)

Some Nikon accessories don’t hold their price so you might find a used remote release at a reasonable price.

For what it is worth the 10 pin connector has been around for nearly 30 years. If all you need is a remote release you can buy a 10 pin to 3.5mm jack cable that could be adapted to work with any wired remote. The pinout for the 10 pin connector is available, an internet search should find it.

The Nikon MC-30 release (10 pin) is very inexpensive and has a lock so you can keep the shutter open for as long as the camera battery lasts.

Inexpensive basic releases are also available through Amazon or AliExpress, but you get what you pay for -- the one I bought to replace my MC-30 (which definitely ISN'T cheap here in Canada) bent to pieces within a few days --- I ended up taping my Nikon release back together and I'm still using it.

I wouldn't buy the cheap knockoffs. Used Nikon MC-30's can be had for ~ $20 (USD) id you shop around!
