The new Rollei 35 AF is coming

There’s a video of first impressions now on YouTube (below) so I’m guessing they’re giving a few to some influencers. Looks generally very similar to the original Rollei 35,but different in the detail.
Some good stuff...thanks for sharing both videos.

I have a few questions. JCH did say that it had as an option, manual focus, but I wonder how that is switched between manual and auto? On the lens (as I can see on the Japan video) there appears to be a manual focus ring, .. But if true, how to switch between manual and AF?
Im not sure about manual focus - there’s no makings on the lens I can see
The aperture reading is fine, but I don't get the number of exposures as it is set at 12, 16, 24, 27 and 36? Who has a roll of anything other than 24 and 36? Why have those others? Does that dial have two modes to it then? one for aperture and one for number of exposures.
On the Rollei 35 that dial does ASA for the meter (inner dial) and aperture (outer dial). As the ISO is now set via DX coding and the little screen on the top I guess a film reminder as the best.
On the other dial, I wonder how to adjust exposure compensation AND shutter speed using the same dial as it just turns and not separate from each other?
On the other video it looks like the shutter speed dial goes -2 -1 A +1 +2 (shutter speed) - presumably the first five are automatic-2, automatic-1 automatic automatic+1 automatic+2 then manual speeds
it is odd that 'after' rewinding the film and loading that you have to physically switch the knob back.
The original Rollei is the same
The other knob is somewhat cosmetic too with color, BW etc... another odd feature but takes us back to the original Rollei.
Yes, that’s a copy of the original Rollei
Lastly...the first video has a number on it of over 5,000...so at least that many are being made:-)

Another video. This one says it’s AF only. Also compares it to a Contax T2. The original Rollei is around the same thickness as a T2 so it looks like the new Rollei it will be thicker than the original.

One feature I like on these "simpler" cameras is a simple add 1-1-1/2 stops exposure. Nikon EM has it; as does Olympus XA.

I had both o those cameras and yes I did like that quick and easy , but the Rollei AF, I think , has a better version, good for both negative and slide films

I think that some have mistaken the focus lock with manual focus.
I hope it has as an option, manual focus. This is from JCH's You Tube site. Initially he stated it does not have manual focus but he corrected it below.

@japancamerahunter
1 month agoSome corrections: The camera does have a light meter, the lens is all glass, it does work as a manual and automatic camera, there is focus lock and the price will be $799

Still hoping

by "manual and automatic camera "I think he means the exposure.

Thats a pretty poor video..... Makes you wonder what the selection process was for them handing out cameras for review:-)

I still haven't gotten a definitive answer....as I have written MINT...relistened to Belamy on JCH. Now, if you listen to that video, go to 24:30 and he states that you can go Manual Focus or AF... But was that him just making a reference to something else or what? I wish one of the people who have those early reviews would / could speak to that.

No , he does NOT.

What he i saying is "you got the self timer, you can go manual you can go auto" you just added FOCUS , but he does not say that...he is talking about exposure.

In the comments to the Jeff Floro video he does say it’s AF only -

“I would say that it's an aperture priority point and shoot . It's compact, it has a flash and autofocus only”

If so...then I will not pick one up. I know the vast majority will welcome the AF and the point of putting forth new cameras is to sell them so most will want that.. Good for Mint for putting this together and while I look forward to the release, and I am on the early list to pick one up, I think I will pass and pass it along to someone else who wants it:-)

If you’re going to use manual focus most of the time you’re probably better with the original Rollei 35 - it’s cheaper (even if you get it serviced) and smaller, so more pocketable.

Agreed..... I am looking at that. I wonder though if the price of the old ones will go down when the release of the new Rollei comes around? I am sure it will go down a bit but how much? Probably not much since we are not really starting with a ton to being with.

IE...when Leica released the new M6, the old M6's did go down roughly 15-20% which is not bad considering the rather large price point to begin with. So now, a Rollei at $400-500 might see a price shave of $50 or so I bet.

I bet the film versions will go up not down in price. The reason, in my mind, is that more will become aware of them and theefore desire to buy the "original" type.

The Leiva analogy may not work here because one model just superceeded the other, with the Rollei it is a totaly different situation.

Good point...totally different cameras although they look pretty much the same. So yes, the incentive for each is strong depending on one's preferences. And right, these are not in the same category as the Leica 6 as it was just an exact copy with a few different materials updated.

Definitively answered.... This is from MINT:

Rollei 35AF is a very reliable modern autofocus full-frame film camera.

Sincerely,
Augustus

Also, a lot of folks looking for the older "classic" Rollei might not even know about this new one.

Even though many classic film era cameras are getting long in the tooth, I don't see any shortage of them.

Maybe, a dwindling of camera repairers and much more expensive to have. a camera worked on, but not a shortage of cameras.

Unless the question for this statement was "does this camera have manual focus?" I don't think that statement from Mint precludes manual focus.

A manual focus only camera
cannot autofocus. However, nearly of my current autofocus cameras also allow manual focusing. I realize that the new Rollei is more akin to a point and shoot style camera, but I don't think that statement definitively rules out manual focus.

I've also seen several comments on Instagram posts that the camera does allow manual focusing.

I'm amending my post because I just watched a newly released video showing a lot of the functions, and it is true there is no way to manually focus. However, there is a half-press focus lock, so that can be helpful vs a true p&s AF mode.
