Hi all..

The squirrel flight is so fast that even 1/4000 sec. don't stop it properly. Birds on the fly are much easier targets.

Lauri that's an awesome shot.

Y'all have much nicer looking squirls than we do in the south of the USA.

Also over here they are a nuisance but protected by law for some reason.

Anyway I love that shot and thanks for sharing.

If you try to fail, and succeed, which have you done?

Duke Blue I'm guessing you are in NC. I lived in Charlotte for 25 years (would like to be there now) and the damned squirrels ate my deck, and did a lot of damage to my soffit.

It cost me over 600.00 to repair the damage to the soffit and the deck needed to be replaced. This is a great shot but I am NOT a squirrel lover. However I do have some pretty good squirrel shots as I had lots of opportunities.

Bobby J. you are absolutely correct about NC.

I'm in Raleigh and have lived there for over 30 years and loving it.

But yes I too have loads of pictures of our squirls only do to having a bunch of opportunities.

They are a huge problem here and I don't know anybody that knows why they're protected by law as we really don't have a shortage of them in our beautiful state.

If you know please let me know.

Amazing shot - already rare to witness such a jump, incredible you were able to catch it this good.

Squirrels are just bushy-tailed rodents. Really. They can do damage, as you said.

The red squirrel in the image is likely from England, or possibly Norway, and I hope they are around for many human generations.

Blue, I think it's just bureaucratic overkill. I know people who do hunt them and eat them, and I have eaten them once. Not for me. I will say this, they are surprisingly smart, really, they can think. Good moms too. They look after their babies. But one of my neighbors got them in his attic and what they did there is nothing you'd want to see.😬🤣

I live in Raleigh. Last year I had so many squirrels running around my backyard that I prayed for Hawks and Owls. No answer to my prayers. One of them was climbing up a screen in my porch.

They spent a few weeks burying acorns in my backyard. Digging holes in my grass.

They terrorized the birds in my neighbor's bird feeder. A couple of them were able to dive off his roof and land on the feeder, even he greased up one of those plastic discs.

So am not a fan. But they are pretty smart ...

Oh Wow.

But yes they are very clever and there's no love lost by me.

Rats with bushy tails and I wished they would be a little curtailed as there are just way to many of them around here.

I have had / have some of my own issues with them and my yard

Luckily no big and lasting damage besides eating the bird food and trashing my back yard.

MNE,

I actually have hsd a few hawks visiting but the squirls don't seem to care too much.

It's really cool to see how many people from Raleigh we have here on this forum.

The squirrels in my local park in Chicago often sit right next to me, their tails flopping over onto my pants leg. They also like to jump onto the back of my bench and walk behind my head.

I concur, rats with furry tails!

We set up a have-a-heart trap on the top rail of our fence and over the last 4 years or so we've probably caught around 60 or so that we've relocated to an area frequented by coyotes and they need food! Never used any bait, they just run into the trap and trigger the mechanism...

All those negative anti-squirrel remarks are just nonsense.

Squirrels are delightful!

We'd be much better off with more pictures of squirrels and less of cats.

Cats do not do the same damage as squirrels in the attic....

They do it in other ways. Like by killing birds that are good to photograph, or shredding your furniture with their claws.

And if you die in your house, your pet cat will eat your face. That should be all that needs to be said about cats.

The pictures were taken in southern Finland, less than 100 m from my home. There are about one million squirrels in Finland. The stock has long been on a steady decline as squirrel habitats are constantly decreasing. In the cities, on the other hand, squirrel populations have remained or even increased slightly, but I haven't heard anyone here claim that we have too many squirrels. In the old days, the squirrel was a valued animal in Finland and was previously used as a substitute for money. Squirrel skins were a valuable barter and squirrel skins were exchanged e.g. to salt.

Here squirrels have many natural enemies such as pine martens, goshawks and owls.

Now I have 8 young squirrels at my bird feeder, but in the spring there are at most three of them left

Watched a squirrel bury peanuts in a dozen spots in my front yard.

Next day saw a couple of crows pick all the peanuts from their hiding places and eat them.

Biggest squirrel threat around here is the automobile.
