Welcome to the Weekly Image Thread!

This thread will appear every Saturday (GMT). If the thread is nearing full before the next Saturday, I may start a new thread and carry on until it fills or the next Saturday arrives and it is reasonably full in which case I will start another. Confused, so am I! From time to time the start could be delayed if I am unavailable.

Although this Weekly thread is in the Olympus SLR forum, we openly welcome users of all brands and models.

Please:

  1. Reply to this post and change the TITLE!
  2. Please reply to at least one other contribution, your replies encourage posters!!!
  3. If asked, please share your processing techniques or technical details.
  4. Please show the EXIF if possible. Please identify the lens used regardless of which camera was used to take the image. This helps people form opinions of the lens used with the body to possibly influence future acquisitions.
  5. If special lighting was used to create your image stating what was done may help others.
Thanks for joining and contributing this week.

Generally speaking I am with you Craig, but I understand the position of the others. I would hate to see a great condition car used to make a rod but for the most part the ones I have seen have been made from vehicles that would cost an arm and a leg to make road worthy. Some are made from scrap parts.

Not sure what was done to this Terraplane. Engine swap, lower part of the hood removed, wheel swap with modern tires for driveability. I don't know what else because I did not look that closely at the car. I suspect not much else was done given the state of the exterior of the vehicle.

I like old cars in pristine condition but I have no desire to own one. They have a style and elegance that is missing from a lot of modern cars.

Who asked whom?

What was his/her answer?

I was passing by and heard the question...

Pretty dark there at that time of day Craig. Being further south I thought your day would start earlier but perhaps not. It looks from your image about the same as it would here for the time shown in the exif.

A good result!

I think the clock in the camera is an hour fast. I think it was set on Costa Rica time.

Dave,

I don't think many people paid attention to what was going on in the field. I doubt many knew the ref was down. The game stopped. He walked over to his horse, mounted and they went on. It was a non-event. I just happened to have the camera pointed in that direction at the time.

The game is played on a field the size of 7 American football fields so the spectators are not anywhere close to the action most of the time unless the play takes the game to where they are seated. Most of the time spectators are too far from the play to see what is going on. Maybe people who play or go more often have a better idea than I did.

I don't know how to photograph this event, where the action is, what it means except generally to follow the horses and riders as they hit the ball up and down the field, shoot at 60FPS, and hope I capture something interesting.

If I had to describe it, this is a social event with some horses and riders doing something in the background rather than a sporting event that spectators are watching. I doubt anyone cared who won or knew what the score was. They were more interested in looking good and who would win the largest and most fun hat contest.

I'm not sure the genteel set is any better behaved or really genteel if you think about the Game of Thrones. In this case, they are more unaware and disinterested and more interested in who had the biggest and most elaborate hat and the best clothing. I think they were more interested in discussing their stock portfolios and expensive watches and autos and the value of their real estate holdings than who won what on the field in a game they probably were not watching. The ref falling off a house was probably little more than amusing for a few people who saw it.

Other than that, it seems like an excuse for a bunch of rich and idle folks to get together to have a party. It really was a Polo party as advertised, not a sporting event. The play ended at 7 PM after which the crown moved on to local nightclubs to continue the revelry to midnight, long after I was asleep.

No refs were harmed in the playing of this game and the spectators were too far away to embarrass him. Maybe the players were amused.

Did you say yes or no?

Yes, it's a big thing with the ladies because they have hat contests. The men are encouraged to dress up and some do. It can be hot though. I was lightly dressed and felt a little hot on a reasonably comfortable day. I would not want to wear a sports coat as some did. I sought the shade when I could.

It's an interesting subculture, more a dress contest for the ladies than a sporting event which is the excuse for throwing a party.. Everyone seemed to be having fun. I've gone twice this summer and I'll go again.

Yes, it's amazing how capable a car you can buy right off the showroom floor, and it's fast and reliable.

With this, you can only restore it for love... or turn it into a restomod or a hotrod.

It makes more financial sense to sell it for what you can and put the money into something else.

Given the repair cost and skills needed for vintage 2024 cars, it's unlikely that they will be restored. Too many expensive and unattainable electronic subsystems that won't be repairable or obtainable.

I thought about that when I saw an ad for new Aston Martins that stated 95% of them made in the company's 100+ year history still exist and most of them are drivable. That makes me think of the pollution that is created by manufacturing a car and what environmentalists think about the batteries and the EVs they buy and recycle. Which is less impactful on the environment? The gas car or the EV you throw away and replace when the electrical system fails or the battery pack dies and costs more than the car is worth to replace it.

Maybe it's better to keep them in proper running condition and keep driving them.
