You might try BestBuy online. I bought one from them a couple of weeks ago, ant it currently shows as in stock.
 
I bought mine direct from Nikon a couple weeks ago. It showed as backordered at the time, but it shipped three days later, so you might not have to wait long.
 
I ended up getting a 24-120 and a 14-30. I already own a 100-400.

I think my DSLR days are behind me and may be selling some of my f mount glass.

i wonder what the f mount market is like.

I checked today and yes they are out of stock, however if you order one, you can probably get it within 1-2 weeks (at least when I checked that's what it said for my area). But as far as picking up today or tomorrow, no. For stores around me (IL) it was estimating perhaps 8/20 as a ship date.

You could call ProCAM in Livonia MI, but I don't know how far you are from them (they're near Detroit, but I think they ship). I've been able to occasionally find some hard to find lenses (like the 28SE when it was backordered a few years ago) just by walking in, they had a spare in the back. Doesn't hurt to call at least.

You could also try Camera Exchange also in MI, but they may only have used copies (since they seem to only deal in used gear).

But if it was me, I would just order it from BB and have them ship it to you or go pick it up. That may be the best option, aside form trying ProCAM.

You can use Ebay sold items, KEH, and MPV to get an idea for the f-mount used market.

PROCAM was my first option. Out of stock.

Best Buy shipped within hours and will be at my house tomorrow. No bad!

Well, sounds like you lucked out. Many are still looking for that lens and having a hard time it seems (comes up periodically). I figured ProCAM might be a miss since they are smaller than the larger stores and probably carry less (and sell less) but it doesn't hurt to try I guess. At least you got one ordered and it will arrive soon.
 
Best Buy did the trick. Wow, Nobody else had it in stock so I ordered from them and it arrived at my doorstep in less than 24 hours. Who needs Amazon prime!

This lens is still out of stock everywhere. This has got to be one of Nikon's best-selling lenses, so I wonder why they haven't increased production?
 
Took me 3 months to get mine from Crutchfield, but my order coincided with the Z6-3 launch. It's a great lens and worth the wait.

I assume you meant that you checked those sites "a couple of months" ago. Currently Adorama is showing backorder and expected availability January 2025. Perhaps some small stores have it, but otherwise the only way to get a new 24-120mm/f4 S in the US is via a bundle with a Z8 body.

Mercifully for my Best Buy account balance, they continue to be out of stock on this lens as well. I'm sure Nikon will get this sorted eventually.
