Advertising, Adblockers, and the future of DPReview

It's interesting that you identified the reviews as something you really don't look at much. I am the say way.

Ten years ago, the reviews were a critical part of this site. The full reviews, then and now, of new camera bodies are very thorough however, they are not particularly timely. Full reviews for a camera such the Sony with the global shutter, were published 6 months after the camera was available. I am not sure how this process can be streamlined other than to water it down. Hiring more people could speed the process, but that requires revenues to pay the people.

If we turn back the clock to 2008 or so, the camera industry was booming, particularly among consumers transitioning from film to digital. Which camera should I buy? DPReview provided helpful reviews and forum members who cheerfully provided advice. The consumer was ready to go and only had to go to Amazon.
Back about 2008 I was sticking my toe in the digital waters with the Canon A series -- I thought 6MP competed well with the film of the day ... When I decided to return to system cameras it was theses forums -- you and all the members of the Oly SLR TALK forum that took me away from Canon to Olympus -- not the reviews. ... Anyway, back then I thought Imaging Resource and Camera Labs provided better reviews for my taste ... There are still several Lens review sites that are much better than anything offered here .., but not as persuasive as seeing how these lenses performed and were used by actual users here .... I think it was Digirame's posts that convinced me to try the old 70-300mm lens that was indeed unique and one of the most versatile lenses I ever used ... I have to admit that if the Panasonic G1 wasn't version 1.0 of mirrorless digital I would have gone there and would probably still be using Panasonic (which I did for several years after the G2 was introduced... and did until Olympus brought out the first E-M5.)

Back in 2008, I was merely lurking here, trying to figure out what this was all about. It was a lot to digest. This site and the people here have done a lot to educate me and help me learn. I continue to learn and improve. I am not sure about the commercial relevance of this and that is no doubt what the owner is trying to find.

As for DPRevived, we may wind up back there in the end.

Like you, I use an ad blocker and wouldn't visit the site if I couldn't.
I have 3 ad blockers. On this page, one blocked 12 ads, one blocked 1, and other blocked 8.

I have no idea how to deal with a site that has 21 ads on 1 page.
Blocking ads is akin to missile defense.
To give you an idea:

Facebook = 1 adblock

NYtimes= 21 adblocks

google news = 20 adblocks

right now dpreview = 16

DPReview is lagging behind some of the competition. I suspect they are going to keep going with the ads. This phenomenon is "ad spiral". More blocked ads require additional ads to offset the losses and encouraging more users to adapt blockers. Rinse and repeat.

"more users to adapt blockers"

and users to adopt better and better ad blockers.

DPR has punched through several of the free blockers I've used with my iPads but the current one is solid. But now we have the " Ad blocker detected" warnings from DPR and the blocker I'm using wants me to pay a subsription to access the anti-ad blocker features - I'd rather pay a DPR subscription

But my Win11 desktop sees no ads and get's no warning from DPR. I guess the internet security suite I'm using is too complex for DPR to interrogate.
