GFX portrait pros studio image thread

Simple 2 light setup. Main octabox, back light using a trip box. I might have had a 4x8 white foamcore for the fill. I wish I had the mathews flag kit in the studio to block some light on the bottom right side.

Here are some Hasselblad X2D images from recent shoots. I used a mixture of the XCD 45P/4 and XCD 80/1.9

I use Elinchrom lighting and the setup will vary from image to image.
Typically I use a 100cm Deep Octa for the key light and a large 110x130cm recta for fill light.
Hair light above the model is a 35x100cm strip box with a grid.
Edge light is a 35x100cm strip box with a grid.

Here are some images of the actual setup for that session.

Single light with a Westcott Optical Spot attachment providing a sliver of light. Very hard lighting and strong shadows.

Here the Optical Spot is used for the grid pattern on the background. A separate light with a snoot attachment provided the main subject light.

Same setup as the first image, but this time there was no edge light added. So Key - hair -fill.

Same setup as previous image. 3 lights.

Amazing work Mads. I follow you on Insta for inspiration 👍

It looks like you have light coming from the left (further away from the subject), as well as the right. Did you use a reflector for that?

You are definitely in a different league with your photography. If you don't mind 1) your reason why are your subjects are very close to the background 2) and How do you make the faces so Surreal in a very very nice way. Keep responding to this forum I love your photography!!

The size of this workspace may be a bit misleading as it was taken with a wide angle iPhone. It is very compact. I have a working distance from the camera to the backdrop of only 2.6 meters. I have to have the door open as I can't fit in :-)

As a result the model will always be close to the backdrop. Typically around 30-50cm away.

Portrait photography will always involve some amount of editing. Sometimes a little, sometimes a lot. When you light skin it will bring out a lot of unwanted blemishes, wrinkles, spots and colour variations.

My goal when creating portraits is to come away with an image that looks deliberate and polished to some degree. My background in product photography definitely plays a part here.
A typical workflow for me is to shoot into Phocus and then go straight to PS for all editing.

First I will remove any unwanted items in the frame. Sometimes a light will be visible or some dirt and dust on the floor etc.

If the frame needs to be enlarged, as in the image above, I do that straight away. I don't tend to crop in PS, rather edit a larger frame and crop later in LR. Better to have the option later.

Then I spend 1-2 hours on cleaning the skin, correcting uneven skin colour, working on shadows and highlights (dodging and burning), removing unwanted hair strands and overall colour grading.

I wouldn't normally do this, but here is a comparison between the unedited RAW file and the finished image, to give you an idea of the process.

Un-edited RAW file. This was the maximum framing I could achieve.
