Hi!

I love my ZF. What i do not like is big Nikon Z prime lenses vs. Sony offering like FE 40mm 2.5 etc.

Anyone here using ETZ21 Pro adapter on ZF body with sony, sigma prime lenses?

I dont like the plastic look and feel of nikon 40mm f2 and looking for third-party lenses like Sony, Sigma..with AF.

Never used adapters before so i have zero experineces. I like ETZ21 Pro since it is really thin and reading reviews it seems people like it.

Thanks for all the feedback or help!

I've used my Zf with the ETZ-21 and various Sony lenses (24-105 f/4 - 35mm f/2.8 Zeiss - 85mm f/1.8 - 70-200mm f/4) and was very impressed with the functionality and reliability. By the way the ETZ-21 and ETZ-21PRO are the same in functionality, the new PRO version just has a better housing.

Autofocus with the ETZ-21 is very good, and reliable in most cases. It is a little slower than using Z-lenses, but the speed difference is 100% for Z-lenses and 90-95% for adapted lenses.

The accuracy was also very good. I did have just a little more misses with the ETZ than with original Z-lenses, but this was just 1 out of 20 times perhaps. All in all the ETZ-21 was way more reliable and usable as I imagined it would be, I've never felt the adapter was holding back my lenses. And I've never had the feeling I couldn't use the Sony lenses with confidence.

The only 'problem' I ran in to was with my 70-200 f/4 where the image stabilisation in the lens and in my Zf body would interfere with each other when composing an image. The images were perfectly sharp but the image in the viewfinder could get a little busy and distracting, like both systems cancelling out the same shake. That was easily solved by turning off stabilisation in either the body or the lens. This was experience from about 6 months ago, so perhaps it is now solved. But I can't test it since I don't have the lens anymore.

Adapting is fun. Just know what you're getting into and check out these threads:

FROM MEGADAP:

1) Always switch OFF the camera before you remove the lens or the adapter.

2) Do NOT touch the connecting pad/pins with your bare hands. Static electricity produced may damage the electronic components in the adapter

3) When you swap between different E-mount lenses, switch off the camera and leave the ETZ21 on the camera. Then un-mount and mount another E-mount lens.

NOTE: It is tempting and easier to leave the adapter on the lens. Some FTZ users here were even buying one for each lens.

4) Do not turn the lens+adapter back and forth frequently when camera is on or off.

I have the adapter and it has worked fine in testing. Locks up tight and the lenses work properly, including the aperture rings.

I haven't bought any FE mount lenses yet, but I am sure it is just a matter of time. I have my eye on several of the Sigma i series primes, especially the 90mm and the 65mm. That little Sony 40mm is a very attractive lens too, although I got the 40mm f/2 SE as the kit lens for the Zf and I am actually really happy with it. I will eventually add another 40 with an aperture ring, I'm pretty sure, but right now I'm leaning toward trying the Voigtlander in that role.

Aren't you supposed to turn off the camera when mounting/dismounting lenses in general? I always do.

I don’t have an adapter and I’ve been toying with getting the ET221 Pro. I have a handful of lenses for my a7cii that I’d consider adopting on the Z8. I have some concerns that are more about me than the actually mechanics of it working, mostly.
  1. Will it annoy me further because I have another trinket to deal with and maintain?
  2. Most of the lenses I own for Sony are fairly small and I’m not sure I see the point on the Z8. If I had a Zf or Z6x it would make sense.
  3. Sony is pushing a lot of optical corrections in camera. I’m curious if the output of a newer Sony lens will compromised on a Z camera.
  4. I have seen the 105 macro and Sony’s 90mm macro Sony lens. I’ve toyed with selling the Sony since the Nikon is optically superior. I think if I got the adapter I’d want to sell the 105mm as there’s no point to keeping both which makes me vomit in my mouth a little.
^random thoughts that likely will not help you

Not sure if i understand your point number 4.
Do not rotate the lens and/or adapter multiple times on the mount even when "locked." It could surge the electronics, and I believe they have a firmware check that if interrupted several times or at the wrong time, could brick or short the device. I've had one refuse to accept firmware updates, after running two prior, and their support was not helpful.

The same thing happened with my Neewer just sent me a new pro version with a small fee, but it did not resolve my compatibility issue.

So get an extended warranty! :)
