I’ve been wanting to upgrade my camera. I’m looking at the Nikon D7500….what is anyone’s thoughts on it?

What are you using now? What lenses do you have?

The D7500 is a highly-evolved DSLR developed for the advanced amateur. Many lenses will be available for its mount for some time. It would be a satisfying and high-performance camera to use in many applications. It lacks some of the advantages of later, mirrorless cameras. But it is also less expensive. Some would say it's a dead end style of camera, others maintaining that it would have value for a long time to come. With all this said, I join the other respondents in wondering what is your previous camera experience, what lenses you might already own, and what types of photography you would plan to do with it.

My thoughts on the Nikon D7500:
  • It is a somewhat disappointing successor and apparent end to the Nikon D7200 D7100 D7000 enthusiast DSLR series.
  • Nikon removed some features from the D7500 that had been a long standing part of what made the D7XXXs enthusiasts level cameras. The major removals are the 2nd card slot, provision for an accessory battery grip, and metering with legacy manual focus AI lenses. In return Nikon basically added a tilt-screen.
  • The D7500 has an inherent liability because its a dead-end, Nikon's last crop-sensor DSLR.
  • With that said it is still a highly capable camera and I went ahead and purchased one a couple years ago to complement my D7200 and D7000 bodies.
My thoughts on your "upgrading":
  • It would have been helpful if you had said what camera/lenses you have now, what you photograph and the issues you are having prompting the desire to upgrade.
  • Have you considered if going mirrorless and/or full-frame would be a better choice for your photography? This would be a good time to make a switch especially if you are not heavily committed to Nikon F-mount DSLRs.
  • A minimalist option would be to just use your phone like the vast majority of people. For most people the is no longer any need to have a dedicated camera.
  • If you still consider the D7500 an upgrade for you over whatever you have now then sure, go for it.

Me! I love it. I bought the 7500 over the D500, for several reasons. 1st I didn't want XQD, and the expense. One card is fine, I'm not a pro, I don't do photos for money, its a hobby. I didn't want the extra batt. grip, if i wanted all the extra weight I could buy a D5.

I wanted the 8 FPS more than the 10 FPS of the D500. I came from a D7100 and its a good camera, but the blasted buffer?

D7500 does all I could ask for, I'll be using mine for a long time.

Like the others said, it would be nice if you stated what exactly you are upgrading from. Do you have an older or simpler Nikon DSLR? Or are you coming from a totally different system?

On the D7500: it has been my workhorse for the last two years, coming from a D7100. The D7500 is a brilliant camera in itself, and paired with quality glass it will pretty much never fail you, wether you shoot events, landscape, street, portraits, travel or whatever.

Currently I'm in the market for a full-frame DSLR body - to complement my D7500, not to replace it. I'll get rid of my D7500 only to buy another - that's how much I like it. And that's why the new body will most likely be the D780 - because its ergonomics and controls pretty much match those of my D7500.

I love mine, although it's not my only camera. I went from an old 2004 Nikon D70s to a D5600, which I wish I hadn't bought although it's a great camera for many people. It turned out to be too limited for my particular wants and needs.

I got my D7500 in the summer of 2017 and it's still my most used camera. However, what I didn't realize when I got it was that it didn't meter with my old Nikon legacy manual lenses, and that was actually something I later realized was important to me. For that reason, a few years later I also got the D500 when its price went down. When I got the 7500 it was a pretty good price and came with two lenses.

If you have no lenses currently and don't plan to acquire manual lenses, then the D7500 might be fine. I like that it has a built in flash (D500 doesn't have that) because that is occasionally useful. I hate dealing with separate flash units. The 7500 takes only one memory card but I don't care about that (some people do care, though).

I like to shoot flying birds and I have two heavy telephoto lenses. Both of my Nikons work equally well for birds in flight, although the 500 does have an edge in some ways. The 7500 is a bit smaller and lighter than the 500 and certain other similar Nikons.

Ultimately, I'd say to figure out what you need the camera for and how you plan to use it. The 7500 might be perfect for your needs and if its shortcomings don't matter to you, it's a great and reliable camera. I would buy it again!

I have my sons D5000 and my lenses are:

Nikon 28-80mm, 70-300mm & 18-70mm. I have a D70s myself but want something newer.

Then it will be a fine upgrade over the D5000 and the D70s.

The camera is fine and (in my opinion) doesn't have a mirrorless counterpart, at least in the Nikon world.

I had a Nikon D7500 before I bought my Nikon Z5 and really liked the D7500. I have been shooting Nikon for about 55 years!

I have been using my son’s Nikon D5000 but would like to give it back to him for his little girls. I have 2 step kids now and one is a cheerleader and the other plays football.

these are the lenses I have:
Nikon 28-80mm, Nikon 70-300mm & Nikon 18-70

i do have these cameras as well:

Nikon EM, Nikon N65 & Nikon D70s.

I’m wanting to upgrade and trying to decide. Also unsure if I want just the camera body or with the lens.

I’m here. My account got locked up and just been able to get back into it this last week!
