Given the recent advances made in technology and imaging using fujifilm cameras it would be good if Fujifilm could review and and update the 200mm f2 lens given its already more than six years old.

Solution
I doubt there have been any advances that would improve that lens. Optics have not improved really, it is a linear motor lens already - focussing motors are the obvious upgrade for old lenses. The obvious upgrade is to pair it with a new body.
I was planning on doing this rental myself, I had planned to do it back to back with the 150-600, but only ended up renting the one, still wanna know what I'm missing out on.
In the UK you can hire over weekend as a one-off free trial - not sure if Fuji do that in all markets. I got lucky and they shipped the lens early, so I had it for most of a week.

Top notch work as most already know. Doesn't the 200 for "portraiture" create a situation where you need to be pretty far from the subject? Obviously you must be used to it but I have never used that FL for that purpose other than a wedding or other venue where tele was important.

Oh and lets not forget that pearl white finish with green accents...OMG drop dead gorgeous! ;-)
Yet many, myself included, would probably cover this in a camo Lenscoat :)

Great images!

I’ve only shot it once but it could be the best XF lens period.

If they could make a 500 F4 with a built in TC - that would be a dream lens.

If you’re serious you need to back this up with concrete reasons explaining why Fujifilm should update such an expensive niche lens, which also has a v. good reputation. Otherwise it seems like clickbait.
I agree; this is primarily another clickbait article. It's becoming a trend in this and other forums. Forum members do research online, providing links, and the discussion follows. I'll be willing to bet that maybe only a few own the lens, and even fewer have shot with it.

How does this benefit anyone in this forum?

I'd like to see more images posted by our members showing the capabilities of Fuji's cameras and real questions about their cameras, so members can help others.

I'm spending less time on this forum because of the type of posts like this one. I only replied because of my first-hand knowledge of owning and using one of Fuji's best lenses for a few years.

Everyone is different and has their own ideas of what is helpful in the forum. I find these posts distracting from what I feel the forum should look like.

All due respect this seems a bit extreme or harsh. It's a gear forum. I own and love the lens and it's easily the best performing X Mount lens that I've ever used.

That said, it's over 50% heavier than the newly developed Sony equivalent. That' not nothing. Could Fuji shave that much weight in a refresh? Probably not, but maybe they could get it down a decent amount.

The lens is so niche that there's really very little chance it sees a refresh but I don't think the question is clickbait or even that far fetched.

However, instead of a refresh, how about a 300mm F2.8? Or just give us that GF mount 500mm F5.6 and call it a day :-)

I've trialed this lens in a very challenging environment where i found the autofocus missed a number of shots and it wasn't the camera i was using (XH2). The weight compared to comparable lenses could be improved and the lens hood is not as sturdy as it could be.

How did the lens caused you to miss shots? If you're using autofocus, the lens simply does what the camera tells it to. Are you suggesting the AF motor in the lens was somehow not keeping up with the camera? The lens has dual linear motors moving a single focus element. There is no problem with focus speed or accuracy on this lens. I use the 200 on both X-H2 and X-H2S. There is no issue with focus speed or accuracy. Period.

Do you have other any experience using super telephoto class lenses? The Fuji is equal or better in performance and build to every other similar lens I've used. And I've owned and used many. The Fuji 200 matches the size and weight of other 200 f2 and 300 f2.8 optics. The Sony FE 300 f2.8 claims 1470g but that's without the foot. So call it 1600g with a foot attached versus the 2262g Fuji. So yes, compared to the Sony alone, the Fuji is heavier by comparison. One of the ways Sony trimmed weight is by increasing the optical complexity. It has more glass elements compared to the Fuji. Fewer elements are better in my opinion for many reasons including less flaring and greater contrast. So there's no free lunch with the Sony.

Super tele hoods universally suck. Fuji's is no worse than any other and shares the same design. However, you can actually buy replacement hoods for a reasonable price for this lens. Have you ever priced a supertele hood for a Canon or Nikon lens? They are 5x the price. If you're serious about this, buy a custom hood from Zemlin.

The lens is amazing. I would like a x2 teleconverter designed for it like the x1. 4 is.
The regular f/2.8 2x TC works fine with the 200mm. There's no vignette since you're cropping out half the image circle.
It works ok but by Fujifilm's judgment it isn't built to go with the 200mm f2. I would like them to make one that was.

Sorry to hear your experience was the opposite of mine.

I dare say making the already entirely adequate lens hood more sturdy (why?) would up the weight, which anyway is complete in line with similar optics (later versions Canikon 300mm f/2.8's come to mind).

You say 'autofocus missed' - so come on, what were you shooting and what environment, what AF settings and what customisation did you do to help the camera?

How do you know it wasn't the camera? Did you try another lens in exactly the same setting with better results? What lens?

One more...

Old post from Jan 18, 2019....

I wanted to share with the forum my experience using the Fujinon XF 200mm f2. Fortunately as a working photographer I can “justify” the cost of this very expensive lenses. I use this focal length for candid, travel, lifestyle and some fashion photography. For me the 300 mm equivalent focal length has always been the way I see the world isolated.

The build quality of the Fujinon XF 200mm f2 is what you expect from a lens costing this much. I have used the lens in very cold conditions (8-15 degrees Fahrenheit) without any issues. The optical stabilization is amazing, I am getting good results at 30th of sec.

Online I have only seen the Fujinon XF 200mm f2 compared in size to the AF-S NIKKOR 200mm f/2G I don’t think this is a fair comparison as the Fujinon XF 200mm f2 is a 300 mm equivalent so a more appropriate comparison would be with the AF-S NIKKOR 300mm f2.8.

Before I purchased my Fujinon XF 200mm f2 I got to try a loner at the Fujifilm Festival held in Venice California last October.

The Fujinon XF 200mm f2 is great for subject isolation and low light performance.

At the Fujifilm festival they had the head guy (sorry I forgot his name and it was not Billy seen above) form Japan answering questions about current Fujifilm products as well as what upcoming cameras and lens to expect. I was able to extend to him my heartfelt thank you for producing the Fujinon XF 200mm f2 lens.

Amazing sharpness and contrast

If you have a need for this specialize lens and you can afford it I would not hesitate to get it.

Hope this helps,
