These weren't taken with a Sony, but since my Sony DSC-F717 will be arriving shortly, I'm partial to this forum. If only I had the F717, they would have been much better. :)

Yes, I was there as it happened. DHL Airbus A300 after missle hit in Baghdad. Here are pics from associated sources here where I'm based as it crash landed. The crew did a HECK of a job getting this out of control plane down safely! It was an unforgettable experience. My knees shook for an hour afterwards (at one point it was coming right at us). I was shook up the entire rest of the day, and this happened at 9:25 AM.

I can imagine the emotions you felt to be that close to something so dramatic. I didn't see any photos like that on any TV news.

Take care Hawker!

Wow, that must have been scary to witness (just imagine what the crew felt like). i'm very thankful the crew managed to get the plane down salefy...the pic looks like the plane ran off the runway and the thrust reversers must be kicking up all the dirt...as they say, any landing you can walk away from is a good one...do you have any other pics of this incident?

He headed for the dirt because he had no control. He had no
hydraulics and on his approach one wing would dip, then the
other. He was flying on throttles only!! It was really
something to see. Very similar to the American Airlines
DC-10 at Sioux City, Iowa in 1989, only this turned out
much much better. As the plane touched (slammed) down
on the right gear we thought for sure the force was going
to rip the wing off. Thankfully it didn't.

These were all I had. No media contact either. I really
don't want to be contacted about it either because these
were a shared group of pics that I just posted so people
here could point their loved ones to a website, rather than
tie up our email system by sending out gobs of pics.

Unable to see any images. Thanks Jeff

Great series of pictures. They go to prove the ancient adage of the press photographer, which is--whether you are carrying a Leica or a Kodak box camera-- "F:16 and be there."

Kudo's to the photographers of these photo's, I agree. I'm just a
gatherer until I get my 717.

Hawker,

The pilot is quite a hero in bringing the plane back to the runway and not go cartwheeling like Kansas city. Glad to see this plane landing in one piece and all the crews are okay.

I see that the crew got the emergency slide up quickly. I haven't seen any emergency slides since I was a kid at Tan Son Nhut airbase in Saigon when the Pan American 747 that I waiting to board had a VietCong hijacker on board wanting to take the plane to Hanoi. In the end, all the emergency slide was deployed and the passengers escaped in a successful rescue.

Thank you for your work in Iraq. I am from South Vietnam and was grateful to the U.S. for their attempt to save us from communism. We failed to save Vietnam. Lets make it up by saving the people of Iraq. :)

John,

Thanks for the kind words. They are very much appreciated.
I'm honestly just doing what I've been trained to do. I think
I'll become somewhat of a freelance photographer once my Sony
camera gets here. Had I had it on the DHL that day I could have
got some great pics of it struggling to stay in the air as it
came in.

Well I'll be ready for the next one (if there is one, hopefully
not though).

About saving the people here, I agree. I think we are doing
them quite a service. The few I've spoke to were very happy
to have us here.

Cheers.
