Hi guys,

I recently bought an old ricoh camera. I took about 6 photos with it and then the shutter got stuck. Any idea how I get it open again?

Thanks in advance!

Hey Dellers --

Assuming you hit the shutter release and nothing happens? Is the LCD meter display showing up? If not -- the batteries might have gone dead. Unlike a lot of cameras with electronic shutters, the KR-10 Super does not have a mechanical-only shutter speed; no batteries means no pictures. I'd also check the contacts inside the battery compartment to see if the are dirty.

If the meter is on, then I'd check that the film is advanced all the way. The winding lever should pull out to its "stand-off" position but stop hard after a couple more degrees of movement.

If the camera has gone belly-up, it might be cheaper to replace the camera than get it repaired. The Ricoh KR-10 Super was also sold as the Sears KSX Super (the version I own), which usually sells for a bit less.

That said -- I own (and love) several Ricoh/Sears SLRs, and the KSX Super has never been one of my favorites -- I find the LCD is hard to see in low light and the shutter has a hair trigger. If you need to replace yours, I'd suggest the non-Super KR-10 (not the M model) (aka Sears KSX) or, better yet, the XR-2s (Sears KS Auto). These are earlier models with a match-needle meter, and the XR-2s (or plain XR-2) has a lot of great features. Shouldn't be hard to find one under $40. I own two (both Sears branded) and think I paid $15 for each on eBay -- shipped! Pair 'em with Pentax lenses and you have a poor man's Pentax K2DMD.

Just a quick note, and I know this is an old thread... while searching for the fix I found this, and wanted to add my own notes, just in case they are useful to others.

I just bought a KR10 Super - had one when I was 13 :)

Shutter was stuck. I could release it by turning the motor drive interface on the base plate anti-clockwise. There was a quiet click, and away it went again.

I did however send the camera away for a full service including light seals, and now it's perfect of course. Pretty much dried up grease/oil.

As of Nov 2023, this cost roughly £80 including the new seals, a cost that I thought was well worth it.

Was that a full CLA for £80 + VAT in the UK ? That’s really good value - I’ve always been quoted much more than that

Hi Lainchy,

i just restarted using my old KR10. I am having the exact issue described here where my shutter gets stuck when I am in AUTO. If I’m in X or B setting, the shutter works fine and the film advance lever allows me to advance the film. If I’m in AUTO, I can click the shutter button but the shutter stays open.

I would like to try to turn the motor drive interface counter clockwise as you suggested in your post but am not sure where to locate that. Could you post a photo by any chance?

Jamie

Assuming this is a KR-10, not a KR-10 Super? Does the meter needle move? If not, this sounds like batteries are bad, installed backwards, or not making contact, since shutter is only working at mechanical speeds (which does not happen with the Super). If the meter is working, something in the electronics has probably gone out or become disconnected.
