I was looking at this lens for street and walk around shooting and hope to get any user experiences with it. Looking at reviews it gets rated pretty well for a “budget” Z lens in terms of performance. I’m really disappointed that this lens (along with the 24mm and 40mm primes) have plastic mounts, but otherwise think they’d quite good for what they are and the conmpact size and light weight are perfect for street.

Is the 24-50mm better than its specs suggest? Is it treated unfairly because it’s a kit lens? Or does it suck as bad as its dim aperture and plastic mating parts suggest it might? (That’s a joke)

It's sharp, however I sold mine because of the lacking DOF-control. I have the 24-70 F4 and the 40 F2 as replacement.

I like this lens, it’s a tiny option for landscapes while hiking where I’ll be at small apertures anyway. Also interesting for street shooting. It’s sharp. The mount doesn’t bother me at all, I think unless you abuse your lenses the plastic mount will probably outlive us all! And since the lens is so light there’s no strain on the mount.

The only thing I don’t like about it is the collapsing mechanism, which I hate in all the Z lenses

I think it was Thom said something about this lens like "I wouldn't necessarily put this on a high MP body" - and I think he's right.

This might not be the lens for paid work or one you want for critical "i'm going to print big".

But as a "walk around" lens, it's fine.
I use it as my snapshot combo - I'm out exploring the coast with the wife, I want to grab some snapshots, i want a lightweight combo, etc etc.

The collapsing thing reminds me of the Nikon 1 system. I enjoyed my V1 and V3 but hated the collapsing aspect of the lenses. I still don't like the way my 16-50 and 14collapse. I no longer have the 24-70 . I truly dislike the collapsing aspect.

I’d be using it almost exclusively on my Zf so I’m not sure if (in your opinion) that’s high res but I suspect not. For the kinds of “critical” shooting you mention I’d use my Z8 along with one of my S series lenses. I’m guessing it’s “good enough” for my used

Totally agree on the collapsing thing. It sort of defeats the purpose for small lenses and is annoying on the larger lenses.

About the DOF do you mean because of the small max aperture or something else?

As per my example shots above, they were all shot on my Zf where I think the lens is a good enough match.

Also, I agree with your statement about the plastic mount as far as facts go, but I also think a metal mount wouldn’t increase the weight or cost noticeably and would make me feel a little better about durability. Then again I have a few lenses with plastic mounts and haven’t ever had an issue so there’s that 😎

I'm fine with something between the 24-50 and compacts, and the S primes. They don't need to be feather light either. I kind of miss the 2.8D and f1.8G size primes, which a spoiled with the FTZ adapter handling wise.

WE COULD USE A FEW MORE OPTIONS! :)
  • I prefer the range of the 24-50 over the 24-S, 28, 35-S, 40, and 50-S.
  • The 20-S and 85-S are exceptional enough to invest in.
  • The 26 has nicer MTF's (sharper center with more fall off, what I prefer,) and was $100 off recently.
I think it is best to go third party or adapt a Sony G or GM lens for now. I compromised a bit more and went with adapting the Tamron 20-40f2.8. I never felt the need to test chart it. It is a great value and I like the results.

Yes, that is what I meant.

Especially for street/candid shooting where it it shouts that you’re about to take a picture
