Is there a padded nylon zipper case that's a good fit for the Sony 16-35mm f/4 Vario-Tessar, that is, the older (non-PZ) model? To be clear, anything that'd not zipper-close is a non-starter, as is anything that's not at least a little padded.

I can't find one that seems like even a decent fit to be protective in transit. The closest so far seems to be the Ruggard LCY-15X3, whose interior height (5") is much more than the lens's height (3.9"), so it could slide around. The Lowepro 9x13 cm (LP36303) is not as hideously garish as the Ruggard, but the interior dimension is actually a hair taller. I worry that it wouldn't quite fit in the Lowepro 8x12cm LP36978 (whose cross-section is actually 8.5x7 cm).

So what do you suggest? Thanks!

I can't point you in the right direction of an exact fit , but the padded ones that I use for some of my lenses that are too long I just cut a separate piece of foam to go in the bottom of it to fill the space .

A shorter one would be nice , but an inch of foam solves the problem.

Thanks for the suggestion. Maybe I'm clumsier than most, but I kind of feel like I need every bit of stability I can get when a lens is vertical, and putting the heavy lens atop an inch or more of foam inside the case and thereby raising the center of gravity that much would scare me a bit from the tip-prone issue. I could put the foam over the lens, but then I'd have to deal with it every time I take the lens out or put it back in.

At this point I think I need to measure / fit test the lens with the caps on and the hood in the reversed / stored position, and maybe see whether I can fit it in a compartment in my main camera bag, which typically houses an A9 with the 24-105 mounted. I've had the same bag forever and I like it. Back in the day it often contained an A-mount lens or even two in addition to the one mounted on the camera. Maybe I can make it work with the 16-35.

Is a zipper a requirement or a positive locking closure? Snap clips are secure as well. I understand not wanting Velcro.

The zipper is more positive and secure than the alternatives some covers / cases use, and does more to e.g. keep out dust than drawstring-type closure. A nylon clip or similar might work. You have something in mind? Thanks!

I do but I need to dig in my stuff to find it or remember the brand.

I did run across this on Amazon. The small one claims to be3.1” x 3.9” but I’m not sure if that’s the inside dimension

The long lenses I keep in individual padded cases such as the Sony 200-600 and others such as my 400mm and 500mm primes , when I don't want to carry them in their hard cases , I have in Lowpro or JJC cases , but you don't leave them stood on end generally.

The smaller lenses I have I tend to reuse Sigma padded cases which are all square , with zip up tops .

These are all very stable as they have quite a large base .

If you can find one of them a out the right size , it would still be ideal .

I have a selection I've picked up over the years , so if I'm out without my usual backpack that has everything in , then I'll just use one of a out the right size for whatever additional lens I'm taking out besides what on the camera .

Might be worth looking into .

Thanks, that's an interesting suggestion. However, the Amazon page clearly contradicts itself: the photo markings clearly show that the cases have those exterior dimensions, but the text under it says 'for lenses up to' those dimension i.e. they're interior dimensions. I guess for that price they didn't invest in good translation!
